Hi I know the vaio z21 series has just been released, as I was talking with a Hong Kong dealer's employee, he said that the Vaio Z21 was already being discontinued, is there any truth to this? or this is just HK sales people marketing.

that was so fast, do you have any more information ? because if this was true, the z21 series will be refreshed by z22 series, and usually by minor cpu upgrades, intel haven't released any new cpu to replace i7-2620m, so I dont think that there will be any z22 soon

The black Z2 is out of stock.
There is still stock of the gold Z2.

thanks for correcting me, will the difference in performance notable ? I just did a google search and found that it is a similar CPU, with a higher <100mHz> clock

Yep. Its basically going to be similar to the difference between i7 620M and i7 640M last year.
Around 5-8% performance boost. (best case scenario)
With the quad cores though, improvement is significant. The new i7 2860QM is faster than the i7 2920XM, the 2760QM is on par with 2820QM and the 2670/75QM is on par with 2720QM. So with these new quad core CPUs, the difference between mobile and desktop i7 CPUs is minimal.

    hi everyone,
couple of questions regarding this news which to me is pretty schocking,
but i guess it makes sense...

first, is this discontinuation going to apply to the U.S. model VPC-Z2190X?

secondly, how soon is this going to happen, any clue into what the estimated date range is for the new release?

i would greatly appreciate any info you guys have, just recived mine in the mail, but i still have time to send it back if they really are about to release a significantly ugraded version!

thanks in advance for any info

so are you saying that the U.S. Z2190X probably wont be getting these new processors anytime soon if at all,
or are you just saying that i wouldn't really see much increase in performance between the dual core i7 620M vs the quad core 2860QM or 2960XM?
also, I am kinda looking for one extra reason trade up due to the fact that I am finding if i could doit over agin i would order the 512 GB SSD as opposed to my 256 GB

I am saying you will find much of a difference in performance between the current i7 2620M and the soon to be launched i7 2640M. The Z only uses dual core i7.

All mfrs rev nearly all models near the end of September. In the us, some z21 models will last through the year and some z22's will show up. CPU bump and some different configs are coming. Cowboy will get his wish....

Aside from the color and the slight uptick in processor, I wonder if S ony will update the drivers and fix a few annoying bugs that owners have discussed.

If it's only the processor upgrade of 100Mhz it's really no news - who cares about Intel's processor bump like this. Until they redo the PMD with something meaningful.

The news I am waiting for is whether or not the ViDock will work with Light Peak. That, or Sony significantly upgrades the PMD.

Which is why the Z22 may be more notable for something other than the minor processor upgrade -- if Sony takes the opportunity.

I wouldn't expect a quad core. It's unnecessary and the heat/power consumption would be a burden.

    It ain't comin'.

The fact that beaups didn't make any comment on quad-cores can mean one of these things: (a) it's a too stupid rumor to even comment on it or (b) they are indeed coming :) Anyway.. I also think it's unlikely and it doesn't make much sense for me to cancel after waiting so long to pull the trigger. Fingers crossed ...

The fact that the Z can't handle the thermal design of a quad-core (it was amazing that they got a full voltage dual core in there) means that "a" is the correct answer.

Is it too early for a refresh? I'd thought we'd last till Christmas before a new model is released to the market. The Z217 (and its equivalents) have only been out for about a month and its going to be phased out for a newer one? That's a little too fast, even for Sony, isn't it?

^ i see, it will be something like when z117gg replaced by z128gg, as far as I know, there are no difference, just the glossy premium carbon

I really hopes nothing much changes in this refresh, because I already spent much money on z217gg and this will be replaced by less than a month ?very disappointing

Yup...it is kinda annoying...the Z117GG was refreshed just after 1.5 months.
If the Z2 refresh has gen 3 SSD then I must get it.
