I was able to install the HDD Protection Utility from the XP Drivers of my model. I had UAC disabled from MSconfig.

No. Although Sony says that they are model specific, actually they are not except for BIOS upgrade. You can use EU SZ drivers for US SZ, and vice versa.

the wireless switching application from the sz491nx worked on my sz240p. so we're getting there, so to speak.

i think i'm down to a camera driver and the memory card slot driver.

oh and i found this amusing - i loaded vista once and it gave me a 2.8 WEI. i dicked with it but messed up the drivers and stuff so i reloaded. this time - a 2.0 WEI.

now that i have most drivers working i did a 3rd clean install. same machine, same config, a 3.3 WEI.

    heh.

I have been trying for several hours to get my fn keys. This is the second time this week I have installed Vista. My original installation got erased the first time I ran into XP after creating a dual-boot system (apparently partition magic wasn't finished with it's partitioning). Anyway, I installed it again, and was less careless with the order in which I installed Event Service, Shared Library, and Utilities DLLs. I have heard different things, the consensus being that shared library should come last.

I have a FE690. I have repeatedly uninstalled and tried different orders to no avail. I think this may be due to the fact that I am not actually uninstalling sony shared library. Does anyone know how to actually uninstall this? Is it even necessary.

My volume keys work just fine but no brightness or 'S' key function.

Can someone please tell me how to uninstall sony shared library or otherwise start from scratch and what order to install them in???

The drivers for EU-models cannot be used for US models or vice versa because drivers have model check. The message is that this driver is not for your model. The solution is to change this file: C/WINDOWS/MODEL/ SZ1XP_C with your model

No, I beg to differ. By using the UK drivers on my TX850P which is a Canadian model (No WLAN) -- I was able to get my FN keys, AV, Instant On, Bluetooth, WiFi, and Vaio power management fully operational on Vista Ultimate (Yes, with Aero running). Only thing remaining that I can`t seem to get operational is the Memory Stick and SD slots. I basically followed this chart - http://www.vaio-link.com/downloads/os/vista/upgrade.html. Just find out what the exact UK to US model is that you`re dealing with.

I was quite surprised to see that the power management is much more advanced than the XP edition. Now, hopefully Sony releases the drivers for the memory card reader.

The size of US/EU-Files are not the same, because the US-version includes spansich and the french language for the installer, the EU don't.

The EU BIOS worked fine onmy VGN-SZ.

Funny thing is, I was able to flash the SZ3-BIOS on my SZ2. :D

TinyRK, did you flash the SZ3-BIOS on SZ2? Does it work? if so, this is a big news, because this means that we, SZ2 users are able to upgrade our core duo CPU to core 2 duo "with full bios support."

It was technically possible to upgrade Core Duo to Core2duo on SZ2, but the bios did not fully support the power management function of the CPU.

Again, this is a big news! Please confirm.

    Confirmed!

I flashed the R0094N0, and it also is shown in Everest!
    So the flashing was successful.
    The SZ1/2-series (should) use R0092N0.

I just flashed the SZ3 bios to my SZ210pb. It worked! Now my SZ is like the brand new SZ3!! with full support of 64bit CPU! Thank you again!

However, I do not recommend this to other users. This will void your warranty. In my case, my SZ210pb is not the original machine because its CPU, HDD, ODD, and memory were upgraded.

    denikin...

If I gather this correctly, I can upgrade my SZ220 to being "64 bit capable" simply by running the BIOS update you did?

I did this, but I am not sure how to confirm that this change did, in deed, occur...

    Thanks for the help,
    Adam

Yes. I know a Japanese computer geek, who upgraded his core duo to C2D. According to him, the original bios recognized the new CPU correctly, but he found some issues in power management and speedstep function, since the bios did not fully support the C2D cpu. He reported that the CPU always ran at full speed, if I remember correctly. He expected that more problems would occur if one installs 64bit OS on it.

I think that the SZ3 bios will resolve this problem. As far as I know the SZ2 and SZ3 (maybe SZ4 as well) are almost identical in hardware, except for the CPU. This means that we can transform SZ2 to SZ3 by simple bios upgrade.

Full 64bit OS support is a big news. You can install 64bit Vista, if you upgrade to C2D. You might notice the change when you install any 64bit OS.

so sz3 can install vista 64 bits eh?

but the drivers need to be 64 bit specific too rite?

and what about software? can 32 bit still run as usual?

Vista64 has a fallback-mode,so most of the 32bit-SW is able to run.
I think all the drivers by Sony are 32/64bit.
Wouldn't make sense to have several drivers.

By the way: all the drivers are still BETA.
The final release can be expected in March.

I did a "clean install" of Vista on my SZ230. I have gotten everything working except for a few items.

    Things I have issues with:

Device manager detected my camera (installed the XP drivers), but Vista does not allow me to use it in anything (I've only tried AIM really). Under the Scanners and Cameras, the camera is not there. Any Ideas?

I have not gotten my S1 or S2 buttons to work.

Vista detects my graphics card as an Intel. My graphics card should be an NVIDIA should it not? This one made no sense to me.

Please let me know if you guys have any questions or advice.

First time I am posting, so sorry if this was covered already.

I upgraded my VGN-FJ170 vaio laptop from XP to Vista Home Premium. Everything (so far) is great, with the exception to my Fn, S1 and S2 keys. My brightness is really really low and that is priority #1 for me.

Can anyone help me out? I was on the phone with Sony "support" who informed me (after 75 minutes) that the only way to fix this is to completely wipe out my hard drive and reinstall Vista. He was not able to guarantee me that this will fix everything... and I am not into reinstalling everything over again.

Is there any way to fix this problem? AURGH.

    Thanks in advance!

    Steve

If you are still having this problem...go to the Sony support site for your model and download the OS Migration driver (Vista) for the VAIO Event Services...that'll restore function to your S-buttons and Fn keys.

I installed Vista as an upgrade to XP Pro on my SZ160P. Everything seems to be working...here's some of the main things I did (hopefully it helps someone here):

    1. used the VAIO Power Management update for the SZ330.
    - it still won't change power profiles automatically...but all the VAIO stuff works

    2. went to Dell.com and got the Alps touchpad drivers from the Latitude 620
    - just make sure you get the driver version 7 or higher
    - now I can scroll and everything...better than the Sony driver

    3. install VAIO Event Services update to get your S1/S2 buttons and Fn keys to work.
    - I can adjust brightness, volume, LCD, and eject my DVD drive (those are really the only ones I use)

    4. I'm using Symantec AV Corp 10.something (it's the Vista compatible one)
    - so far this is the only big brand AV I've gotten to work on mine

    5. Search google for Protector Suite 5.6.
    - uninstall the one you had from XP first!!!
    - 5.6 is better...it recognizes your swipes a lot easier.

    Issues
    1. I don't hve a CD/DVD burning program (Nero 7 and Nero Lite 7.7.5.1 don't work for me)
    2. mp3 volume in WMP is a little quieter than I remember before the upgrade
    3. no functionality for the MySafe feature in Documents.

Nothing else major...other than those things...I'm just waiting for Sony to release the REAL Vista updates that they can finally support beyond "Install _______ driver."

If anyone can help me with those issues listed, it would be greatly appreciated!

    Jeff

    1. Infra Recorder - OSS goodness here: http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/?page_id=5
    2. Well, the audio stack in Vista is VERY different than XP, so I would guess that might be the source of difference in volume. Max volume on my FS790 seems to be greater than in XP, so go figure.
    3. True Crypt - OSS goodness here: http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php

True Crypt doesn't hook into the fingerprint scanner, so you wouldn't have the same functionality as My Safe (at least how I understand it to work, as the FS series doesn't have a fingerprint scanner :(). However if you are more interested in the encryption features, give True Crypt a try. Can't beat the price!

I don't know if the volume is actually lower or if I'm just def from playing Resistance so much...haha. PS3 FTW!

has anyone gotten the protector suite to store the finger prints on the chip instead of the hard drive? the only option it gives me is the second one to store on the hard drive and the first one is grayed out. Other than that, I have gotten most things working.

Well after I broke my SZ, the replacement better and new one came with Vista (got it yesterday).

I also only got the option of Hard Drive but chip was greyed out.

I wonder whats up with that...so atleast no one installed their drivers wrong.

My understanding is that the chip used in the VAIO SZ's does not have onboard memory to store the prints...this Upek software is used for a wide variety of sensors/chips some of which probably do have onboard memory.

    1) Download the updated TI Media Card Driver (SP33416.exe) from here:
    http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/fi...oad/23750.html

    2) Run SP33416.exe
Answer the prompts and proceed with install

    3) When install is done, you will have lost the permanent drive D: Memory Stick and drive E: SD/MMC. This is ok as the new driver responds to events rather than having permanent drives available and when you insert a memory card, a new drive will automatically appear.

    4) Insert your 4GB SD card and you should hear the new hardware ding sound and your 4GB card will show up as a drive. I tested with 4GB Transcend 150X SD card and it works great.

One minor caveat is the 4GB SD card is not automatically recognized after resume from standby or hibernate. This is not that big a problem because you can just remove and insert the card and it will then be recognized.

Before your install, you were running the Sony/TI 2.0.0.9 driver

After your install you will be running the TI PCxx21 2.0.0.6 driver dated 7/6/2006

    ----

This fix was for the memory card reader to be able to recognize sizes of up to 4GB. This happens to fix the no-driver issue for Vista as well.

Works fine for my Transcend 150x 4GB and my 1GB Sony memory stick/PRO DUO.

This is my first post but I hope this helps!
