I noticed something about my speakers in Vista. When I open up the properties for my laptop speakers and go to the Levels tab, the level is 24 when my VAIO volume meter is at half. The VAIO volume meter matches the one in the system tray, but not the one in the speaker properties. I don't know how to fix this.

I have tried to get the utilities to work for a day now and I do not know what I am missing... Maybe it is a step or a particular driver...

I have an SZ120P/B that I installed Vista Business on. I cannot get the FN keys to work, there are 3 unidentified devices in the Device Manager, and the utilities do not work (i.e. HDD protection).

I have read these posts and I see many other people have gotten their stuff to work, so can someone help. I even tried the UK drivers, changing the model.txt file to allow use of other model updates (which would not work for me... The text files kept getting changed to the correct model number when I launch the driver file).

    I need help, please.

If the file is being overwritten, you haven't disabled write access to model.txt. The Sony installers run a model check when launched, which will rewrite the contents of model.txt. By denying System write access, the installer cannot change the contents and the changes you make will be preserved.

    Please reference the following image.

A Deny check mark will override any Allow check mark.

    Good luck!

I tried what you said and it still failed. It even changed it back to the SZ120P. What now? Any ideas?

    Don,

According to the image you uploaded, the file you changed write permissions on is located on your desktop. The file you should be changing is located in "C:\Windows" - this is the file the installers will change, not the one on your desktop. To be on the safe side, you should also select the Administrators group and SonyVAIO\Don user and apply Deny to the write column as well. Each of those three "groups" can have different permissions for the same object.

The other thing to keep in mind, is that UAC will not allow you to make changes to any file located in "C:\Windows". You will need to give yourself Full Permissions to make the initial changes to model.txt, then disable Write access in all three user groups.

Alternatively, since you've already run the installers, the actual update programs have been unpacked to your temp directory (%windrive%\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\Temp). The directories should begin with GLF. Simply run the program inside, bypassing the model check altogether.

    Good luck!

    --L.

I installed the Vista Ultimate Upgrade on my SZ330P, and after being told by Sony support that it would work I have had issues like everyone with things not working. I called Sony support and they said maybe after April they will support this edition.

Well I am slowly getting things to work on the computer but have a great problem trying to remove programs like Protector Suite, which i have to do to install the new one. I keep getting a message that I need permission to do it. I am the administrator yet it still will not unload the program. I also get a message when trying to uninstall it that Internet Explorer 5 is required.

Anyone have a clue as to how i can dump the program????

    Steve51,

Have you turned UAC off yet? This is a security feature to prevent unauthorized things from happening. It may be interfering here.

If you're still having problems, there's another method to extract the files from the packager described here

I am getting super frustrated with my Vaio VGNFJ170 ever since my upgrade to Vista Home Premium. I cant use my Fn keys as well as my S1 and S2 keys. My priority is to be able to change my brightness level - my computer is on the lowest brightness setting and my eyes are killing me. I have called Sony for some tech help, and the only advice they offered was for me to wipe my computer out and reload my OS - which I wont do.

PLEASE! If anyone has a way to help me out, I would be so grateful. Please email me at [email protected]

    Thanks,

    Steve

I cant find it... help? I assume you are talking about opening the control panel and going to Power Options (the battery icon). It only offers me to change my power plan - with no way to change my brightness level... I desperately need this to get fixed - my eyes cant take this abuse anymore... :(

has anyone gotten their nVIDIA drivers to work? I had to go straight to intel to get the onboard graphics card to work correctly...but nVIDIA hasn't released a GeForce Go 7400 driver for Vista. My SZ160P can only run on the onboard graphics card right now.

Microsoft has Nvidia drivers through Windows Update or you can download them from Sony. Just look for OS Migration drivers for any Sony SZ3x model like the SZ330P/B.

^^ thanks! I installed those and my laptop works on Speed Mode now...but I still don't see any functionality from the nVIDIA drivers. I can't get into the nVIDIA control panel or anything for my display like I used to in XP. Are you able to change your nVIDIA settings?

Just noticed this too...running on Speed mode...I can see in the display properties that it's using the nVIDIA drivers...but I also cannot change the brightness via Fn+F6 or F5.

Check out the thread linked in my signature and in the first post there's a link to Sony's Nvidia Vista drivers. Install those, they should give you Nvidia Control Panel and brightness, etc.

^^ i figured it out...you have to install them in a certain order. I did the Sony Video Shared Library, then nVIDIA drivers, then VAIO event services.

I've got an SZ160P...also uprgrading from XP pro. No clean install...I recovered my system in XP with VAIO recovery...and immediately did an upgrade to Vista Business. Are you doing this while you're switched to Speed Mode? If you switch to speed mode...Vista will have basic drivers supporting the nVIDIA card. That'll allow you to see what you're doing in order to install the REAL drivers.

Has anyone gotten their My Safe to work with the new Protector Suite 5.6? I need some password protection on at least ONE folder =/.

    Hello,

please, I need you help: I own an SZ1 (european model) and one of my upcoming projects was to upgrade the SZ1 from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

In tha past, I've seen the driver/BIOS chart Sony published on www.vaio-link.com/downloads/os/vista/upgrade.html - and thought, this is ideal for me, because there I can find everything I need in one chart.

But now, www.vaio-link.com/downloads/os/vista/upgrade.html is no longer available

Is there an alternate link for this chart?
    Thanks a lot!
