wild05kid05,
Interesting. Are other envy owners with the same problem?
-
Thanks ZoinksS2k -
I doubt it's a problem specific to (Flash) streaming, as I've gotten plenty of crashes while just playing videos in Media Player Classic, not even full screen.
Always, the performance is on speed, whether set manually or by the Auto selection. Twice, I've had the screen flash black but immediately recover with Windows saying nVidia device has crashed but recovered blah blah drivers successfully installed. -
Yes theres a black screen thread in HP section, but mine issue seems to be because I underclocked my GPU to 150/250. Probably the underclocked gpu can't handle the loads
-
disable system reboot after crash, and also post your minidump up on Answers Home Page in the win7 forum. they can tell you whats causing it.
-
I say we protest to Sony/Nvidia about this Black Screen of Death issue. Really annoying
-
The real important thing is I view most of my videos on Windows Media Player, and after watching for perhaps, 20mins, the entire screen locks up and doesn't respond.
Sony/Nvida must release a new driver! -
SandyRavage:
Have you called Sony for support? -
Taiwanese and Japanese Z owners are experiencing the same problem. (Black Screen of Death...)
Watch the following video in 1080p and full screen mode in Speed mode
YouTube - We Are The World 25 For Haiti - Official Video
looks like this is a serious problem...

This has happened to me 3 times in the first 2 weeks of owning my Z:
1st time - Trying to start a game (Killing Floor)
2nd time - Streaming video from Guild Wars 2 website
3rd time - Watching MMA fight video from mmalinker
Resulting symptoms - Screen turns instantly black, loud repetitive noise from speakers as if a sound byte is stuck on repeat, sounds like the SSD is emitting a loud sound too.
I always have to do a hard restart to fix it. All of the aforementioned instances have happened while the switch has been set to Auto and the mode is set on Speed.
I hope there's a fix -
such an expensive laptop with such a disappointing flaw. I say we all PROTEST!
-
I don't know if I have the same causes like yours but I will still state my problem. The crash is caused by comodo defense+ because it blocks program from accessing csrss.exe. After turning defense+ off, everything back to normal.
-
Until somebody spends the time to speak with Sony on the issue, this is all academic. -
I have same problem. Watching Hulu then a continuous buzz and screen goes black. Happened three times so far with the Z. I will try watching Hulu in stamina mode and see what happens.
EDIT: watched a full episode of Bones on Hulu in Stamina mode. Pretty smooth and no problems except the show video froze while the audio continued, one time, but that could be anything I guess. -
TofuTurkey Married a Champagne Mango
Btw, I was watching Three Kings last night. There was this scene in the movie where the Iraqi interrogator said that USA made Michael Jackson hate himself for being black. I don't pretend to know exactly how Michael felt or his circumstance, but that statement made me sad. And now I hear so many celebrities sing his song to highlight the plight of Haitians. That made me sadder.Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
i have the z116 and encountered the same thing when watching hd clips...
now what? -
I just analyzed my 2 latest dumps and i found that a sys file from the Intel Ethernet (so wired) driver; to be more precise ''e1k62x64.sys''; was the problem for the BSOD/Black Screen of Death errors.
[start of a part of my dump file]
SYMBOL_STACK_INDEX: 3
SYMBOL_NAME: e1k62x64+23810
FOLLOWUP_NAME: MachineOwner
MODULE_NAME: e1k62x64
IMAGE_NAME: e1k62x64.sys
DEBUG_FLR_IMAGE_TIMESTAMP: 4bbae4c3
FAILURE_BUCKET_ID: X64_0xD1_e1k62x64+23810
[end part of dump file]
this file was in all my dumps and if you look online you'll find more people with crashes and the same file. I uninstalled my Ethernet driver for now, and it all seems to be working fine.
I had mine updated to the latest tho, so hope they will work something out ...
ps: still trying if this really fixes things, i really hope so ... -
If it doesn't help, call Sony. -
I got the crash about 10 minutes after unpacking my Z
Youtube was among the first things i tried out, eager to see the glory of the fullHD display.
Has anyone got a statement from Sony about this???
AO -
I had also installed the new intel network driver, and i was getting the crash 10 seconds after launching a HD video in fullscreen. I reverted back to the sony network drivers and no problem since !
-
I've had it with videos, but I've also had it a couple times playing Virtual Pinball. No video playback going on, no specific network activity going on, and only minor 3D happening.
-
see http://forum.notebookreview.com/6256004-post67.html -
I don't know about that. I've only used the wired connection once, and every one of my crashes (maybe 5 total since I got it) have been on WiFi, and twice on things that don't even involve the network. It really seems video related to me.
-
You don't have to use the Ethernet port for it to be a problem. It is on all the time.
-
Mine is Z116GG, today I got 4 crashes, I'm getting very frustrated with this
At the last crash, I disabled Wireless (hard switch), used stamina mode (hard switch), but it still crashed. Blue screen said that there's error in MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, which is the same as what I got many times before.
Does it mean there's actually some problems with mine's hardware?
FYI, I'm using a "clean system" as guided in other topic in this forum
Thanks, -
More than likely not.
What were you doing, exactly, when the crashes occurred? Watching the same video 4 times and getting 4 blue screens would indicate you shouldn't watch that movie anymore
If it is the full screen Flash problem, revert your ethernet driver to the sony default and disable hardware acceleration in Flash. -
Hi ZoinksS2k,
I was in work at that time, I used:
- Some Java applications
- Firefox with Google search.
- Thunderbird
- Some Gadgets (windows 7's stock ones + "All CPU Meter" downloaded from Windows' gadget site)
- Windows power shell
etc.
I'm not sure if there's some flashes in those web pages, but there's absolutely no full screen flashes/videos.
As far as I remember, most of my crashes so far occur when there's no full screen flash.
Do you have any clues for this case?
Thanks in advance, -
Could these crashes be related to memory controller? I've had similar crashes on my desktop and it was relevant to the memory controller not able to sustain 8Gb of RAM with 1066 speed. (running only 4Gb of RAM resolved this issue temporarily until I RMA'ed my mobo)
So just a thought... Is amount of RAM installed play factor with these issues? E.g. do you see more crashes with more RAM installed?
It seems that the most difficult part of these crashes is that they are intermittent. -
Doubt it.
However, quite ironically, I had my first memory bluescreen this morning.
I was just doing email via wifi.
I did a clean Sony install over the weekend and had run with a clean install up to then. I'm blaming the install right now. -
I got 3 more crashes today (up to now, in less than 8 hours): one with IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error, two others with no specific error code/module
Is there anyone know when will Sony have updates/announcements on these crash problems?
Are they at least aware of them and doing something to solve?
I really don't understand how comes such a high grade laptop model can be released with all those severe problems? -
it happened to me once too.. I just got the lappy tonight. It happened when I was installing firefox, updating windows, and maybe some other programs.. I was switching screens too fast while installing and it kinda lagged, then went black. I've been watching a lot of videos (youtube and hulu full screen) and watching avatar in HD with no crashes so far.
-
I wonder if this happens on the Z12 series?!
-
Considering nobody has one yet, tough to say.
I think these issues are software based, so the chances are high.
I'm hoping that Sony releases some updated drivers and a BIOS update along with the Z12. They've done this kind of thing before in the past. -
It's time to follow Ubuntu thread -
We are having marginal success running Optimus on the Z. It may be good for a few users to try it for a while.
The demo text overlay is a major pain, but I'd be interested if people still see the issue with the latest Intel and Nvidia drivers. It looks like HD video defaults to the Intel GPU, so the overlay would mostly affect gaming.

Will definitely try it out this weekend -
Even if they had an update I guess we would have to download it manually since Vaio Update, at least for me, does not work either.
-
Don't think VAIO Update works for anybody, at least not more than one time.
-
A new video driver has just come out for the Z on June 3rd. I'm going to install it and hope that it resolves the issue of the black screen of death. I suggest others try it and see if it fixes the problem.
Please post your info here if it has worked or failed.
Cheers.
Sony eSupport - Electronics - Software Updates & Drivers
UPDATE: Cancel the install the Sony rep gave me the wrong driver it was for XP. -
^you sure that driver is for the Z? Which Z???
-
-
Wonder why it's not showing up for my Z112
-
It also doesn't show up for the Z1190 if you go through the normal process (US site). How do you get to it through normal navigation?
-
I just checked my driver version number and the driver still seems to be the same. I don't think the updated driver was applied. I may have to call Sony back. Anyone else with the same driver version after the update? -
Figured it out. The file you posted is for Windows XP. I think most of us here are on 7.
-
From what they told me they don't know anything about this problem. -
Is it "normal" (not hardware problem) if my Z crashes 3-4 times per day and the crash reason vary from time to time? Error includes memory management error, sometimes paging fault, some DLL modules' error, etc. Sometime it crashes with no specific error at all.
I personally don't think that's Windows 7's fault as many other laptops/PCs run very smoothly. The problem seems to be caused by Sony's software/hardware.
-
-
In the last crash, I just using Outlook, and firefox. Firefox has only one tab that open this reply screen. I also use some gadgets (stock ones + All_CPU_Meter)
In other cases, I just use Outlook, thunderbird, eclipse, firefox.
Firefox mostly display pages related to programming.
If you want to ask about full screen flash video, the answer is I seldom watch flash videos -
Try closing All_CPU_Meter.
I've had problems with apps that take info off the hardware sensors on Windows 7 (CPU-Z, GPU-Z, CrystalHDD Benchmarks etc etc).
I had only on BSOD, but that's about it. And maybe try using something other than FireFox? I remember reading somewhere the latest releases were buggy...?
I personally use IE8 but only because of the fingerprint capability, so I don't really have a choice... If the biometrics worked on Chrome or Opera, then I would throw away IE8 without a second thought...
Strange crash on the Z1190
