there is a fingerprint plugin for firefox fyi.
For the crashes if removing allcpu does not help it certainly does sound like a hardware issue...specifically ram. Have you run windows memory diagnostics?
-
I had similar crash today. I left the laptop on for like.. 20 minutes.. and then came back only to find that the screen totally blanked.. i tried hitting ctrl-alt-del, power button , nothing happened. blanked. i had to force it to turn off and then restarted it, there i saw a blue screen on start up.. and then auto shutdown.. and restarted again.. its fine now.. not sure if it happen again or not...
Model: 117GG , Maxed spec, except 256SSD. -
so... did anyone ever find the solution to the strange crash?
i didnt have the crash for a long time, my vaio update started to work! finally!, i updated my bios, streamed some video full screen and it crashed. not sure if its the new bios or i've just been lucky from the regular same old crash. -
Just had the crash happen twice with watching a streaming video from gametrailers. I'm running a Z12.
Quite annoying! -
I still get the crash randomly. I updated bios and all Sony software and running win7 on my Z11 with 256ssd.
One time the sound actually hung permanently like a permanent beep... this leads me to believe it might by audio + video related -
When in Stamina mode there are absolutely no crashes when watching Hulu, but in Speed mode a crash in Hulu is practically guaranteed sooner or later.
-
Any updates as of yet?
-
expensive laptop with a crappy bug. sony should really do something about this.
-
You are late for party by like 5 weeks now. There is a set of updated videodrivers which does not have this issue.
-
Really?! where?!
-
new set of videodrivers for new Z13. Also, do not update the ethernet drivers, for some reason they cause the crash (I had this issue with april intel ethernet drivers)
-
Can confirm the ethernet driver issue. Been trying to upgrade for like 3 versions and everyone of them crashes with a ''black screen of dead''.
-
When upgrading my Z12's video driver to the Z13s, should I do my normal PC practice of uninstalling Z12s from safe mode, rebooting, and then reinstalling the new one from safe mode? Or is it ok/better in this case to just install the Z13's over the top of the default?
-
WOW, I downloaded the new drivers and it was fine watching full screen videos. But just now, I was playing Tetris Online Japan in window mode, and it suddenly crashed! The black screen + buzzing noise! I thought it was fixed!

New drivers from where? The VPCZ130X model site? or from the VPCZ11/12 sites? -
Same issue for me. Yes from the Z13 US site. The drivers seem to be from around October '10, but my system says they are from 19.01.2011 ?
I installed them in safe mode, but without paying attention to if I installed them with admin rights. An issue? Also I removed the old drivers via Revo Uninstaller Pro. Didn't see another way to proceed, as I can't use Vaio Care / Recovery Center to use external driver files.
I use a Sony Vaio VPCZ1-1Z9E/B with Windows 7 x64 Pro.
I didn't install any other drivers off the website, but I'm tempted to.
(I downloaded the ones for Bluetooth and the Gobi hardware.)
As of the ethernet driver (postings above), are the cause (too)?
Which version actually works? I still have the original Z11-EU drivers on here..
I've got not many tries left, as I firstly don't want to damage my hardware! and secondly I'm surfing on UMTS/WWAN currently, so only limited download capacity!
That's why I always try with offline videos also, they crash the laptop too! -

Wow, i haven't seen any reports of the black screen + buzzing in about... 5 months... I really have to read back on what was the problem with that... it was a very common occurrence back when the VPCZ11's just came out... but after the newer drivers came out and people started using them (as well as the community modded ones), they haven't seen the problem. Are you sure you're using the ones from the VPCZ1390X site? The VPCZ11/Z12 have different drivers from the VPCZ13 support sites.
Look at this thread, and download the newer official versions(scroll down half a page) if you dont feel like using the community modded ones:

Hi Achusaysblessyou,
thanks for your answer. Frankly:
I messed up photographing all BSOD's earlier. This way I was guessing for too long.
I can tell you the guy before us is right: It's (partly) an ethernet driver issue!
I thought now I'd fixed it, as initially several videos from my local and NAS hard-drive worked, but no:
YouTube crashed my laptop again. The "e1k62x64.sys" is the issue, i.e. the "Intel® 82577LC Gigabit Network" adapter, but the newest driver version 11.5.10.0 (06/15/2010, from e.g. here) just doesn't do it!
But I still suspect the NVIDIA drivers involved! I was able to install the drivers you mentioned (I found this thread too!)
BUT 1. my maximum resolution was 1024x850 (or so) and 2. it still did go crazy & crash! (Before installing the newer GB driver though.) I tried both the "Nautis 260.63" and the "thomaskc.dk 263.00" versions.
*edit* btw. I also tried the 190.24 again, which did then work and give a fine resolution, but also still crashed.
As of my current experience, I'd need the following:
1. A driver for the Intel® 82577LC Gigabit Network adapter, which does not have this flaw.
2. A driver for my NVIDIA G330M with which my resolution stays at 1920x1080.
The question is only: Where to get those? Is there an download archive here in the forums or on the Sony website? How to know which to choose?
I think my above details should narrow down the issue quite well at least.
Thanks!

Ok, so to install the custom solution... you must follow the instructions outlined below the custom drivers in the thread that contained them (i copied them here):
You need to install the driver... which will then limit you to the 1024x(whatever) then do the steps outlined above while you're in that 1024xwhatever mode. It's freaky and i thought the same thing as you when i tried using the custom ones before i realized that's part of what's supposed to happen (they need to clarify the instructions).
Try the custom drivers first if you want, then look for newer Intel Gigabit Network drivers from Intel's site, although i dont remember anyone complaining about those not working. There have been reports about the wifi crapping out once in a while that was fixed by using the wifi drivers from intel's site (dont worry as the wifi/gigabit network drivers are for regular parts that should work unlike the vid drivers, which is a proprietary sony solution) -
So my computer has done this a few times, and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone. Similar scenario, it almost always happens when I'm on YouTube or anything flash-based. So, what's the fix? I have a z12 btw.
-
Seems like people are suggesting that it is related to Intel Drivers and nVidia Drivers
get the latest Intel here http://downloadcenter.intel.com/con...oadType=Drivers&OSFullname=Windows+7,+64-bit*
I would recommend my nVidia drivers which can be found here

If you don't wanna hack your BIOS then get the drivers from here

Either do what ComputerCowboy says or if you're like me and still want the switch functionality, download and install this: Sony eSupport - VPCZ122GX - Software & Drivers
which is a newer OFFICIAL Nvidia and Sony driver. If you want to try a community built switchable hybrid graphics, try this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sony/342947-my-discoveries-vaio-z-s-hybrid-graphics.html
But, I really haven't heard of many people having this problem... since a year ago
I mean that's when Sony released the Z13, and the new official driver i linked you above. Before then... well you can read this thread, many people had the problem, but they all went away at about the same time, so it should work for you, else, just use the community built ones. Hope i helped!
@ComputerCowboy: I think you're right, if i remember we were considering wifi driver, nvidia + intel drivers, and possibly even just adobe flash (they don't exactly have the best track record
)
but seeing how I've never updated my wifi drivers (still using stock ones from May 2010) and toplap12 is still experiencing the crash with (presumably) updated Adobe, it must've been a problem with the initial Nvidia + intel drivers.
On the topic of drivers... Imma go dual boot win 7 + win 8 developer preview tonight
hope everything works with the Z, should probably install it on the desktop... but whatever

Don't bother with Win8, lame sauce. Nothing worth the huge amount of space it will take up.
I installed it a week or two ago, boring. -
^ Actually the dev preview might be cool. I tried an earlier alpha.
If I were you I'd still set it up in a virtual machine though. I'll give it a look in VPC -

Sigh...CC, it seems I'm back at the well, so to speak. I would like to try this, but I have never set up a VPC, and really don't want to "learn" the hard way. I'm not asking for instructions, but might you have a linky for me? Thanks. -
I put Win 8 in Virtual Box today, it has come a long way since the last Alpha build I looked at.
I can upload a big driver pack for the cleanest clean install if you like. Last time I did a clean install was like a week ago and I have all of the drivers and crap -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
That's an awesome offer. Problem is, I'm kinda in nursery school regarding VMs - totally understand what they do, but don't know how to install one. Main questions:
1) Is Virtual Box a VM "construction" app? Free? (don't mind if not, just wondered if there is a pay version that is better to use).
2) Once you set up the VM, is it like a second computer, so that everything I do in it will have no effect on the partitioned off Windows 7 machine I have?
3) If I'm near the right track, and i partition, say, 30 GB (enough, too much? I have 300GB free, so I can spare it) for a VM and do a clean install of the W8 developer build and install your drivers, how do I get it to access my data files?
4) Is this too complex for me to attempt without reading up on VMs and/or VB? Have a link to suggest?
Thanks again for the driver offer - and all the rest. As I said, any knowledge you give me, I will "pay forward" to someone who starts out where I am now.

VirtualBox is free, so is Microsoft Virtual PC
VirtualBox is more capable than VPC, but I use VPC for some stuff, like just today I had to make an image for my boss, so he could give a presentation. So I did the whole config in VPC because it is simple and does everything needed for that job.
Note: win8 doesn't work in VPC, at least I could not make it work, but it does work in VirtualBox
VirtualBox supports x64, VPC only runs x86
A VM is like a app on your computer that has another computer in it. Totally partitioned. The VM hard drive is a file on your computer
Virtual Machine files grow as needed. So if you config a new VM and tell it to use 30GB it can use up to 30GB, but it will start out at nothing, then you install windows and it gets bigger. My virtual disk file for Windows 8 x64 is like 14GB, I install some applications like Office 2010 also.
It is mad easy, install Virtual Box, make new machine, install OS
I'll slap something together, maybe make a post out of it. It would be good to have a clean install guide. I install fairly often... so everytime I do I could update the drivers in the post also. Note that my install is a bare minimum, I don't install any extra un-needed Sony crap. All the buttons and stuff work, but no other junk like battery care and VIAO update. -
I was thinking about installing linux, probably the Mint flavor, on the next-gen Z. I figure that there is almost no chance of linux working with the PMD but I don't care much about the dock -- there's always MS for the few times I might want to use it. My thought was to install linux as a dual-boot with a loader -- I don't want to be dependant on Win to boot. But I may be better off installing linux in a VM. Thoughts?

lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
I really appreciate that; actually, many people (including me) have asked in various threads if someone would list the bare necessities for a clean install but I don't think I've ever found someone's idea of a definitive "light" build. What you are doing is going it one better, to actually populate with the latest drivers. Will you probably put it on your web site? -
Yes I'll put it on my site, it is a pretty short list, only 250MB worth of files.
I am doing a major overhaul on my site, it has been in the works for a long time. I just upgraded my hosting to unlimited storage and bandwidth. I also upgraded the code to .net 4.0 and added SQL 2008, time to make my site awesome. -
lovelaptops MY FRIENDS CALL ME JEFF!
Awesome is the word I would use to describe most things you do
. Look forward to seeing it.

ok I'm really pissed off now. I updated the sony drivers and now my max resolution is 1024x768 (my z12 is a 1600x900...)...the scaling is all messed up :S HELP!

I made the silly mistake of making the update for the wrong model...Didn't think it would matter but apparently I had to specify that it was indeed the VPCZ1290S...Thanks for the tip, hopefully no more crashes
