Im looking at the Vaio Style Japan site. The Sony one. On it they show the TZ with 3 types of battery,
small, standard + large giving
6, 12 + 18hrs (for SSD config)
or
4.5, 9.5 + 14.5hrs (for HDD config)
Ubercool, which of these batteries do you have on your TZ, small, standard, large. I know i may sound like an idiot but just think we may be crossing wires here. Thanks.

Ubercool has the standard battery.

lightweight = small
standard = medium
enhanced = large -

So Ubercool is running a standard battery on an SSD config which according to Sony should give 12 hrs. Using the scale i laid out earlier comparing to Asus claimed battery life under Vista he should be getting just over 10 hours battery. Which is clearly not happening.
Sorry to be labouring the point but im desperate for this thing to live up to its claim/hype. It was to be used not only as a travelling/study companion but to bring to court day in and day out and i really cannot afford to have it flatline on me in front of a judge. I miight as well string myself up from the power cord. -
i could not find a quote for the claimed battery life of the Asus R1f on the Asus website, which i find very weird.
But almost all laptop manufacturers that i've bought from (this might be an exception), claim laptop battery life to be much higher than the actual uptime...this quote is usually made with the laptop functioning at a non realistic/non real world performance - such as with the screen switched off, no optical drive, no wifi/bluetooth, no sound, no nothing....
if you really need to be unplugged for the entire day in court, you might do well with the tz90's enhanced (large and bulkier) battery, which gives probably 9 hours (real world) juice, and considerly more uptime if you switch wifi off, get the SSD version, and lower screen brightness etc...i really can't see how much more juice you could want a laptop -
The standard/medium battery (VGP-BPL11) is rated at 10.8V, 5800mAh, which is equivalent to 62.64Wh (more than the TX's 57.72Wh standard battery, btw). The large battery (VGP-BPX11) is a whopping 8700mAh (93.96Wh).
If we use ubercool's estimate of 5 hours of battery life, that means it's using about 12.5W of power (62.64Wh/5h), which seems a little high. Say we get 6 hours, that's 10.4W, which still seems a little high compared to my TX, but we're comparing XP to Vista, single core to dual core, etc, so it's possible.
From my measurements on my TX (not TZ), here are some estimates in power usage and possible savings:
wifi connected, but idling vs wifi off: +0.5W
highest vs lowest lcd brightness: +2.2W
32-bit vs 16-bit colour: +0.4W
dvd idle vs powered off: +0.2W
Now, start tacking on the power saving features mentioned above, and that's 3.3W there. 10.4W - 3.3W = 7.1W, which translates to about 8.8 hours. Almost 9 hours vs their advertised 12 hours. Also, don't forget the configuration (an extra 1GB of memory will consume a little more power), as well as software running on the system (things running in the background will prevent the cpu from going into lower power modes [ie. C3/C4 power states]) can make quite a difference in battery life. I'd say with 'decent' settings and light desktop usage, and a cleaned up vista install not using aero, you should get around 7-8 hours, maybe even 9 hours.
What about the advertised power usage? Well, at 12 hours (btw, sony hong kong advertises 11.5 hours), that translates to the TZ idling at 5.22W, which could be possible. Sony advertised the TX850 as having a maximum battery life of 11 hours (5.24W usage), and it can manage 4.6W (~12.5 hours) at the ultimate power savings setting, so they were pretty accurate with the TX.
Someone with a TZ should load up the ultimate power savings profile and see how much power their notebook is using (use something like notebook hardware control or MobileMeter). With the increased battery capacity, it's entirely possible that it could manage idle for 12 hours.
Note these are pretty crude power estimates/calculations, but they're fun to think about anyways. -
And for those wanting more pics of the TZ, I found this blog entry of someone unboxing their TZ:
http://blog.so-net.ne.jp/flosshimane/2007-05-27_vaiotz01 -
Well, if it's rated at 12 hours, it's a gross exaggeration of battery life.

Vista is the big unknown here. I'm already starting to experience the stability problems I had with my other Vista machine. I may well be forced to go back to XP anyway. I've asked Dynamism for an XP image disk, so I can do that if necessary. Vista is such a POS.

very nice find brewt. great pictures.
i was wondering if anyone can tell me if those pictures are of the premium carbon or the regular black finishing? -
That's the carbon-fiber model.
-
Are you sure?Seems the black one to me,but of course you know better.
Beautiful it is,maybe i will consider the carbon-fiber! -
I'll try to take a picture of it glistening in the sun, that will really show you the carbon fiber texture.

Whats up with the toy dog? Looks cool! I want one now!

anyone speak french lol -
Anyone knows if dynamism guarantee no defective pixels ? Or these new Vaio screens don't have any ?
-
Does anyone got their TZs from Dynamism yet?
Is it comes with all the software in English as well?
Has anyone got SSD+HDD? Any opinions..? -
I am still waiting for mine from Dynamism, I ordered SSD + 160 GIG HD with docking station. I am suppose to have it shipped on Monday but who knows. They have promised me many times that I would have it last week and I still do not.
-
I already posted a huge thread on this. Why don't you search for TZ Owner's Thread?
-
Hi:
I am about to order a TZ from Dynamism. Can you please help with the following questions?
1. Should I wait for the US model so that I can get the US warranty? Are these things pretty reliable? If I want the SDD option, it seems the US model won't have it. True?
2. Is it possible to order only the 32SDD and leave the 2nd bay empty? i.e. No HD, No DVD?
When the 2.5" SDD come down in price, I want to install a 64GB SDD in the 2nd bay. This is what I have in mind ==> Transcend IDE SDD
Is that possible? Or, I can use PCMCIA flash or Express Card flash if 32GB is not enough. The point is, I want to go completely digital and no moving parts.
3. 12.1" vs 11.1" screen. Does that make a big difference? I still have some hesitation about whether I should go with the Toshiba R500. But I want the integrated web cam and Express Card...
Sigh, can't someone make the perfect laptop with everything that I want? Less than 2lbs, and run 24 hours on battery?
Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I've been glued to this thread for 3 weeks now and didn't seen your post. If anyone else missed, its http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=130621
Did you got all the other bundled software?
Is it comes with headphones (seen somewhere that it was suppose to..). -
Microsoft Office 2007 preview, but I uninstalled it for my own version. Also comes with Skype, which I use, and Acronis -- back-up and recovery software.
No headphones. Only what comes in Japanese package: an incredibly small power supply and a manual! Oh, I forgot, an LCD cleaning cloth! You think you would get more from Sony for your $3K!

Not to rain on the TZ's parade, but has anyone seen the new Toshiba RX1 just announced? Hate to say it, the Sony may look better and have a slightly faster processor, but the fact the RX1 is a 12.1" widescreen, just as light as the Sony G I just got, and has a 64GB SSD makes it droolworthy.
-
1. I hear the U.K. has it, so the U.S. may get it too.
2. No, the cheapest version is one with just a 160GB drive in the CD bay.
3. If you can take a Sony TZ apart, you should be able to get it done, but I don't recommend it. Too much work and risky without right parts. You can use an ExpressCard Flash drive, but they're not as fast.
4. I would never get a Toshiba for this one. The Sony is much cooler. I have a 12-inch second computer, ASUS, and it looks positively huge now! How quick attitudes can change!
But if I were to be quite candid, I prefer the slightly larger keyboards. This one is not easy to type on, although I'm getting much faster after just day three!

what about
SonicStageCP 4.2

How is the fingerprint reader? Do you use it?
and yet.. they are the best
will be my 3rd vaio -
The U7500 1.06GHz processor is relatively weak. I thought the 64GB SSD drive was not going to be available until fall. I would love to see it in the U.S. though!
-
The R500 actually uses a U7600 1.2GHz. That's the same as the TZ, isn't it?
Also, they are already shipping it with 802.11a/g/n.
The 12.1" screen is really tempting. The big draw back is lack of Express Card slot. And I really do not care for the silver case.
Paul -
Yes, same chip. I don't care about "n" -- doesn't really help -- but 64GB SSD? You know what they say, once you go SSD, you just can't go back!
-
Guys, does anyone has a clue how it is with those defective pixels ? Does dynamism guarantee 0 if you order the TZ ? I'm not sure if these new screens even have some but I remember it was necessary to check when I was buying my LCD screen about 2 years ago.
I want to order the TZ but it would really bother me if there was a tiny black/blue spot on that amazing screen. -
Whenever the 64GB SSD becomes available i will switch it with the 32GB of the TZ
Uber, because i'm not really in a hurry to order it i thought that wireless n is something more. Why don't take it? Why do you say that it doesnt help really?? -
exetlaios wrote: "Whenever the 64GB SSD becomes available i will switch it with the 32GB of the TZ."
But are you certain about that it will be possible for a regular customer (without special technical skills) to switch the 32 GB SSD to a 64 SSD, so that it will work properly and without problems? -
The RX1 and the R500 do not appear to be the same computer at all. If you melded the best parts of both together, it'd be great. The TZ has it beat looks-wise (not even a question), but slightly slower processor aside, I think the RX1 is a tad better equipped.
I'm liking the G so far. I have no regrets, but it finally looks like the ultraportable market is getting some interesting stuff after being stagnant for awhile. -
Looked at the specs of the RX1 vs the R500, was wondering what characteristics of the RX1 you felt are better than the R500? Might have missed something -- it didn't seem to be lighter or have better specs. I've been eyeing the R500 since it was announced (the C2D put it ahead of the Vaio G that I had been previously eyeing)... Thanks.
EDITED TO ADD:
Never mind... they are the same thing!!
Toshiba Press Release
-
Is there any news on these being released in the US yet?
-
I'm a bit confused about something, not to rain on anyone's parade or anything but here is what Toshiba is claiming:
but if you remember the sony vaio x505 which was produced what, years ago
can claim:
.38" equals to 9.65 mm which is less than half of what Toshiba is claiming. But Toshiba does have a 12.1 screen
Also keep in mind of this:
Not sure if this is the default frequency or its just set to 400 during power savings mode. -
I'm quite certain that is possible to switch the 2 SSD. But like you, i'm not an expert and i will ask a special technician to do the work if possible
-
uber, got a question for you
Not sure if you reinstalled windows or not.
but can you tell me how much total space it shows for your hard drive altogether? -
This is not a Toshiba thread. If you want to discuss the RX go to Toshiba thread please. Keep it to Sony.
-
I know there have been a lot of people saying it is really difficult for a user to upgrade the drives themselves.
Does this apply to both the 1.8" and the 2.5" bay? Or is the 1.8" bay easier to upgrade?
Thanks in advance.
Paul -
I did not reinstall Vista. I have apps and docs on the drive now, so can't really help you with a net figure, but Windows takes 8.9GB. After adding apps (6GB) and docs (3.8GB), I now have 9GB left out of a total of 30.4GB.
-
is this true that vista has MUI (multi-language user interface)??? and you can download this via windows update to change the language of Vista without reinstalling a new vista??
if this is true then i can buy the sony tz from japan (I'm currently living in japan) and just download the MUI from microsoft website so i don't have to buy an english OS.
Please help. -
Me too i'm planning ordering it from japan. If is possible this that you said with the MUI it would be great, no new Vista install and no searching for drivers.
I sent a mail to Sonystore but they don't risponded yet...
Anyone knows if is possible? -
Only Ultimate and Enterprise editions allow multiple MUIs to be downloaded and installed, so you won't be able to do that with the OS that comes with the TZ.
Read this for more info:
http://beqiraj.com/windows/mui/index.asp -
would you not still need to read some japanese when you first log into windows? unless you're very familiar with windows vista and all of its program placements, it'd be a bit hard to navigate around. I didn't even know how to shut down the machine or reboot because EVERYTHING is in japanese.
-
Well, Japanese program names in the programs list will look garbled when switching languages since the characters don't change, but I think if you switch the language and locale, most of Windows' menus, dialog boxes, button labels, symbols and setup programs are converted.
-
The American manual for the TZ is on Sony Style Support now.
-
I wish they would just announce the US version already. I'm itching to order one..
