So in the meanwhile, what do other people use to protect their Vaio Z laptops with extended battery? Recommendations?

Both the Sony leather VGP-CKZ2 and the brilliant SFbags above fit the extended battery. I have both.

I take out the battery. It also ensures that the laptop will never turn itself on for whatever reason and burn itself up.

Hope that helps. I use my WaterField sleeve for the standard and extended battery. Works fine with either one.

oh yes my old VGN-z890 almost burned because of that!!! It was in the bag on sleep mode (I think) and it turned it self on. When I opened the bag and took it off, the screen was black fading and the notebook was very very hot!!!
Any idea what caused that and how to prevent that to happen in the vpn-z1290 ?

It could be due to wake up timers. Go to Control Panel, power options, advanced settings. Under 'Sleep' there's 'Allow wake timers'. You can disable them.

But just in case I take out the battery anyway :)

As long as you shut down, the Z won't power up with the lid closed.

In case anyone is wondering about the airport security checkpoint friendliness of the M3C case, I just took my Z12 through airport security inside the M3C case which was inside a "Checkpoint Friendly" computer bag. I had no complaints from TSA.

Disclaimer: TSA rules can be applied differently by different screeners so your mileage may vary.

    That's right. But be aware:
When you close the lid, the laptop goes into standby. After some time (there is a timer), the laptop wakes up and shuts down into hibernation (can be set in the energy options), if this happens in your sleeve and there is something going wrong and the computer hangs, it might burn itself.

Just turn off your Z when you are traveling long distances (car, plane, etc) so there are no second thoughts or doubts about your Vaio turning on. The only time i leave mine in sleep is when it's at home on my desk or in my case next to me in my class.

TBH most notebooks have the power switch under the lid and this makes a lot more sense to me. They can still be woken by unplugging a usb mouse though.

Hi, yes, I have the 25-17 that Gary recommended...I just still worry now and then about the extra space inside. I have a Zero Shock III as well, but there is the same issue. I wish that there were an MC3 case that was custom molded to accommodate the extended battery.

    Thanks you guys!

I should have some word next week on our progress to customize the interior of our 12" case for Z (standard battery). If all looks well we will start the manufacture process and allow for preorders while we make them.

    hi all,
I'm looking for a sleeve, where my Z12 with extended battery would fit. it should be made of leather, as the Z series has such a high quality

thanks you all for your recommendation ^^

Amazon.com: Sony VAIO VGP-CKZ2 Leather Carrying Case for Z series (Black): Electronics

The Sony VGP-CKZ2 is Sony's leather sleeve for the Vaio Z. It fits the extended battery fine although the Vaio Z 'is' that much easier to carry with the standard battery and looks sleeker.

I bought the extended battery thinking I'd use it everyday and in the end, only use it on air travel. All other times, the standard battery and the Mach 3 case do fine.

I have a Zeroshock III case for my Vaio P. Fits like a glove. Was really hoping there was one made specifically for the Vaio Z. Too bad there isn't one.

One thing I really hate about the Zeroshock case is the outer vinyl material feels kind of cheap and smells quite a bit.

May I ask a stupid question?

This is the Mach 3 for the Z, right? Why's it being listed as 12" when the laptop is 13.1"?

Long story short, we had/have a case that we designed for 12" and under laptops. But as things evolve the case is being transformed into a Z specific case. It is also a part # that we use. I think once we complete the interior adjustments for the Z and start production we will change the name of the case. I hope that sheds a little light on the story.

I would love to take a look at the interior of the case with and without the Z. I'm really interested in seeing the fit and padding of the case.

Really tempted to get the Mach3 CF Case, but if I'm spending that much money on a case, I want the tightest, perfect fit, not an adapted case with extra room on the inside. Even though it's a small amount of space, it's still some space, I mean we're talking about THE ultimate case here, right? ;)

I ended up getting a Zeroshock III which has a good amount of extra space, so not the tightest fit, but there's room in the top zippered storage pouch for the AC Adapter at least.

If you read previous posts (or peruse mach 3's Website) you'll find that Mach 3 Composites is working on a custom-fit version of their 12' case.

I haven't seen the M3C prototype photos but I understand they are adapting the 12" case which is a few cm too wide and too long by modifying the interior, not the exterior. I'm sure M3C will correct me if I'm mistaken.

I strip of foam 2cm across was all that it took for a perfect'ish fit

I have the VGP-CKZ2 leather case, SFbags Waterfield, Sony VAIO sleeve (thrown out), M3C 12", Zeroshock III. The leather Sony is perfect and looks very smart with the standard battery (also fits extended) but the SF is a perfect fit with shoulder strap. Light, durable and very well made and what I use when travelling (also fits extended battery).

Daily use, I use the M3C 12" which provides hard cover protection slotted in a briefbag. The Z adapter transformer is rather large and I much prefer SFbags to the Zeroshock.

so my question to M3C would be, would the carbon case start to yellow after a period of time? How did you guys go about applying the the layer of clearcoat to protect the case from yellowing?

Well, the extra bit of foam or whatever they're adding internally to the M3C Z case might actually be a good thing, if it adds more protection, specifically corner/side impact.

Will wait to see further pics of the new interior.

Anywhere that sells sleeves... your local target, staples, office depot (almost said home depot :p).

Amazon has a large selection, I'm using a Zeroshock III atm. You can get those off Ebay (or you can get the Zeroshock IV from there too). I think the person i got my ZeroShock III was the buy yap### or something along those lines... he's got a bunch on ebay.

The yellowing is the resulting effects of UV rays. This has a greater chance on exterior CF car parts like a hood. You can actually use a variety of automobile brand waxes to keep it looking great. I carry a 15' glossy case and I abuse the heck out of it and it is doing well. But I think I am going for the matte finish next. We will be postings cf care om our site soon.

What's the benefit of kevlar / carbon fiber weave? Absorbing impacts better for drops?

Is it just as rigid as the all CF case?

Or is having the kevlar weave just decorative in this case?

I'm most interested in the more stealthy all CF matte finish, though. Probably less likely to show scratches and scuffs, right? Or does the gloss finish CF wear as well as matte finish?

    Question for MC3:

Is the matte finish a smooth, bead blasted type finish that's sealed with a coating, or is it the rough, raw, and heavily textured raw CF finish?

    Ever flown to Canada?

I always had to remove my laptop from it's protecting sleeves (Tucano second skin).

I do not understand why as the X-Ray are strong enough to see right through.

Can't wait for your Z-specific case to be available.

Just to clarify, I know what raw unfinished CF is like, and it's not really all that pleasant to hold in your hands. While it would be more grippy, I would prefer a smooth finish.

Hmmm. I might have to go with a gloss finish then. It'll match my other CF case I have for my custom IEM's.

Mach 3 Composites first look at our custom Z interior prototype. This is for the Z with a standard battery. More to follow. Remember these are prototypes, the fit is perfect with extra protection on the sides. We will get some pictures up soon with the laptop in the case.
