    Should I be paranoid?

    Here's the story.

Last Saturday, I was using my laptop as usual, and some how my LCD hinge on the left side, came completely off, ultimately splitting some of the casing on that side too.

So I called Sony, explained to them what happened and well, they want me to send it in for service, so I agreed, and so.

The box came Tuesday, packed it as I was told, put a copy of the warranty/receipt (I had bought it from Sears online, so all I had as far as a 'receipt' was the email) as well as the "Repair Inventory Sheet", okay, awesome, it gets there on the 13th, and is received on the 14th. I check the website yesterday, and they wanted me to pay a $299.59 "estimate", so I did, because apparently, what happened to the computer was 'systematic damage' and is not covered under the warranty....and the man was explaining to me i should of had an 'accidental damage' plan, now I don't know anything about those? and apparently, the keyboard was not functioning, so on top of charging me to fix the lcd hinge and the casing, some how in shipping the keyboard broke or they broke it....because it was working fine the day the AR left my house.

...My big issue now is, I'm hearing that their ' standard system check' involves re-imaging the harddrive. I'm a little paranoid about that because not only do I use the computer for everyday computing, it's used for work and I have a few emails downloaded onto that laptop that I probably can't get back.

I had a Dell laptop at one point, and it was easy to take the harddrive out, and now with the Vaio I have, I couldn't get to it, and they even said to backup ALL your data and I'm just....

Anyone with words of comfort to a stressed, frazzled twenty year old?

Now I don't think they would have re-immaged your harddrive unless there was a reason to do so.
Like for example suspicion of a computer virus.
(However I have no experience with Sony in that respect)
Now I think its unlikely your keyboard broke during transfer if everything else is fine (casing, screen). So I wouldn't hope so, but maybe it got damaged during repairs, or someone just forgot to connect the cable...
