My laptop (in the signature) randomly doesn't completely switch off unless I force it to shut down by either holding the power button for 5 seconds, or disconnecting the power cord.

This has been happening ever since I bought it, i've formatted many times but that doesn't resolve the issue. Happens sometimes, sometimes switches off fine, what do you reckon is the problem?

Where can I find a BIOS update for the VGN-SZ484N/C ?

Probably won't help, but I had an old Compaq that wouldn't shut down. Turns out my Brother in Law was looking at porn on it (EEEK!) and it got some virus/cookie that messed up my laptop. I can't remember which it was, but it was from one of those websites. It was some process that kept running that wouldn't let it hibernate. But that probably won't explain your problem since you said it was happening from the time you bought it.

If you're running Vista, make sure you go into the Power Settings and check the setting for 'Media Sharing'. It's one of the last settings in the advanced tab. Make sure you have it to allow your laptop to turn off/sleep when sharing media for both battery and plugged-in.

This is usually enabled by default and will stop your laptop from completely powering off so it can continue to share media.
