aaaaaaand it's gone. No more Z1290s on the Canadian site. Not configurable, anyway; they still have a random set of pre-configured Z's available for less than the $2k for a 1390, but idk what generation they are. And the prices are nowhere near the $700 drop that exhausted the 1290s.

Too bad I got mine at $1300 rather than $1200, oh well, I could never actually put it in my cart at $1200 so I'm still happy with the deal I got.

Yes. Part number on the bag is 891280290 which Google said it's a MDRNC021LBM2SET. Come to think of it, I don't think it has the extra module that has the noise-canceling tech on it though.

What module are you referring to? The n/c circuitry is built into the z, there is no separate module for those headphones.

Oh? I though all noise-canceling earphones had a small module for an AAA battery to do the noise-canceling. Didn't know the Z has it built in. I was expecting something like the MDR-NC22. It looks like it but no module.

Z has it built in, but it only works with the included buds.

I doubt those buds will work on anything else anyways due to the proprietary plug.

What's proprietary about it? It's just a standard combined in/out plug like many of my other pairs of plugs with a built in mic.

I thought the jack on the Z is the standard 3.5mm one.

It's 3.5 mm and it supports standard 3.5 mm plugs, but it's also extended to supported the supplied noise-cancelling headphones (they simply have a mic on them, the noise-cancelling happens in software on the Z).

it's got 5 subsections and afaik, standard headphone/mic headsets with combined plugs have 4 subsections on the plug. Feel free to use the Sony buds on you other devices, though  Maybe it'll work

Standard MONO headphone/mic headsets have 4 subsections. STEREO ones have 5 subsections, just like the Sony one since it has dual mics, one for each ear.

Like I said, feel free to use that on any other device. I doubt many of them support this sort of contraption.

In other news, sonystyle usa is finally offering a discount on Z12 as Z13 being offered. A whopping $170! what a joke

Like I said, it's not a "contraption". It's standard. I doubt you'll find any other devices that don't support it. If you look carefully at the plug, those extra contacts are on the ground part of a stereo, non mic, mini RCA. So they will either be grounded or floating. Either way, it won't affect the audio. I use a third party combined audio/mic headset with my Z for telephony. It works fine since it's just a standard plug.

Look at this thread for a bunch of examples where the Sony Z buds work just fine with other devices. Show me an example where it doesn't. There was one post that said it sounded "funny" using his iPod. That was user error. You have to push the plug in the hole. That generally helps.

Not the best discount, but at least Sony gives a discount on the Z12 notebooks. :p

I'm a lot more disappointed with Sony USA for not offering either (or both) the iLink + 2 USB & HDD only options on the Z13 series. :( I guess the good news is that I'm keeping my money because I'm not buying a Z13 & will instead wait for their next refresh. :D Hopefully, Sony will be "kind" enough to offer those options in the VAIO Z14 series for the US market in the future. :D

I kinda doubt there will be Z14, with Sandy Bridge I imagine they'd transition to a new design, calling it maybe Z2 or something else

BTW, all the Z13 parts are on backorder but I think it's just a system error, while they are transitioning. BTW, no black color for Z13? what's up with that? I guess carbon fiber is the next best thing :)

Ah... dude. You are so funny. Did you try reading that thread. Plenty of examples? The only example that people complain about is the iphone/ipod touch. I addressed that in my post. You have to push the plug in all the way. The problem is that the iphone/ipod touch has a non standard 3.5mm plug. The Sony Z earbuds have a standard 3.5mm plug. Did I mention that before? :) The iphone/ipod touch plug housing is smaller than normal. This is a well known problem. 100% of the not made to be compatible with iphone earbuds don't work. That's why there are things like this adapter.

    3.5mm Audio Adapter for Apple iPad / iPhone 3G / 3GS, White

So let me restate my challenge. Find me a device with a standard 3.5mm plug that doesn't work with the Sony buds.

That's fine with me Sony redesigns the whole series in the next iteration of Z. :)

I'm still "surviving" very well on my computing needs with my VAIO Z690 notebook. I've also installed a 256GB SSD on it, so it is not running too slowly.

I called today since they said there will be an update and they said they have no update and they don’t know what’s going on. They have over 100 orders and they will probably get cancelled. I have yet to receive an email about the delays, phone call, or the $25 e-credit thing. He also said that i should wait another week or two to see what happens, which is ridiculous if they make people wait a month and then cancel the orders.

You seem right; they almost pushed me to cancel my order!!! Telling they have no update and we have to wait 2 weeks ... but how can we trust Sony any more with online orders!!! probably I should add the 300$ for upgrade to 256ssd and get the z13 since I ordered the z12 with i7620, 4gb and full hd 1920x1080, 128ssd, this will be even cheaper than the 1290 with same configuration and 256ssd!!
At least they have to send orders that have not get the 700$ discount!!!

I hear ya. My 1330 is fine too, although that 8400gs worries me  but it's so heavy compared to the Z and it's lacks muscle for anything CPU-intensive like HD video playback :D But with SSD it matches Z in everything else :D

But I'm happy with my Z, I got a terrific deal on it :D

If anyone is funny, it's you. If the Sony headset is not compatible with a huge number of Apple products without an adapter, what makes it standard? if anything, Apple headsets are standard in that case by the sheer numbers they have over your Sony 'standard'

Well then, decades worth of other headsets before the iphone came out aren't standard either. That adapter is not just for the Sony Z headset but for any standard 3.5mm headset. Grab any headset from a CD player from 5 years ago and it will not work on the iphone. Use the Sony Z headset on that 5 year old CD player and it will work. Seems pretty standard to me. Ever wonder why new headsets specifically say they are iphone compatible? Now you know.
