There are only two issues that I have.
1. can't turn off dvd power.
2. can't place SmartWi on sidebar.
Every thing else works ok. I am using upgraded Bios, and followed the directions to the tee for a perfect install.

I need some help and I dont know where to begin.
Do I have to install the drivers in order?
Please help and give me some idea on how and where to start.
Thanks for helping. -
Just download the firestone files and follow the bbasra directions. Yes the order of the Sony utilities after the drivers is important. I/O utilities and parser need to be installed before Sony utilities. Novatel and WWAN was last.
-
Can someone repost the Globetrotter HSDPA WWAN driver again, the download link hit 10 downloads and rapidshare has taken it offline

This is SONY firmware extension parser device. You can download the appropriate driver for it for your model from Sony.
-
thankx a lot problem solved installing by the esupport from the us sony site!
Just another thing: i've a geforce 8400 GS and the fn keys doesn't work if i install another driver from video2go. I try the 178.24 (SO Vista Ultimate 32bit, driver WHQL). And i've to install in order: event service, shared library, video shared library to make working the brightness, suspend and vol keys.
but not work, where is wrong? -
Guys, just make sure you have all the windows updates installed before you try to fix the graphics adapter.
In my case, I was struggling for hours before I got the service pack, after which everything worked without any intervention. -
You mean with Vista on SP1 is OK? Or wait for the web update first.
-
Doing my Sony recovery disk and it takes forever. I had been surfing for a few days and it back up my cookies and URL too? Maybe the hd is slow and I can hear it chucking along. Yah it is slow.
Rapidshare takes forever to download if you dont want to pay.
I done put in the new 500 gig HD and had install the x64 drivers and everything. Everything looks to be OK. -
anyone have a direct link to the Sony 64-bit Bluetooth Driver.
TIA. -
ive tried to install this about 20 times now . i do wish some one would make a list on how to install in order i think were all having trouble because to many lists of order . i would really thank you for that !
-
Condensed steps (from my experience):
1. Backup your stuff
2. Download drivers/apps. This is where most people get stuck as there aren't specific drivers for the Z series yet, but other drivers will work
3. Install Vista
4. Install all drivers, making sure that device manager is clear. This includes Video and the Sony I/O and Firmware parser, will be one of the system devices and stops the battery/hibernation nag later
5. Install Sony Shared Library
6. Install Sony Utilities
After that, you can follow any order you want.
This being said and repeating myself and others in the thread, these DO NOT WORK:
1. Advanced power management. No Auto-Off DVD, lower refresh/color depth on battery, no Sony Vaio power plans. This is why I haven't kept x64 on the machine.
2. No Sony SmartWi gadget. SmartWi and Sprint BB, WiFi and Ethernet work fine, just no Sidebar gadget.
Finally, this is the clean install process I've used for ages on three different Vaio's. I even tried it with Windows 7 this weekend with good result, but that is another thread. -
Many many thanks for all of you, wo helped me out, getting Vista X64 running on the Z21! It was a really help, to read here your experiences!
All runs fine, Stamina/Power Mode, the FN Keys, S1 & S2 - really wonderfull..
The only and last thing is the HDSPA Modem..
I got the file, which was provided here (3G_Option_GTM378E_GTM380_v4.0.2.32_Vistax32x64_XPx32x64.rar) from bbasra..
But in my devicemanager are no wrong entrys anymore, no unknown device, where i could try to point to the driverfiles.. Also a scan for unkown PnP Devices doenst help.. I`d tried to, to add the drives with DPinst64 - which works, but doent help, because this tool only offers to preinstall the Driver..
Could someone explain me the HDSPA-Modem installations steps? What does i have to do?
Hope you understand my english, i`m from switzerland ;-) -

Quick question to you all, how much ram can this unit see with the latest bios installed? I know the specs/literature say a max of 4gb but i remember on the old S-series' the literature used to say a max of 2, and you could definitely get 4 on there, it would only see 3 of course, but that was still a whole 1gb more than the specs would lead you to believe. I'm obviously wondering because i'd like to embark on upgrading to 64bit vista but it would make it that much more worthwhile to upgrade to 64bit knowing that i might be able to one day make use of the 4gb dimms that have been coming out recently. I usually work in CAD/rendering and it would be awesome to go past 4gb if possible.
-
Where can I get this one? I don't see it in Firestone's package.
pls reply
edit: well, nvm, FN and Eject are working
thx for this topic!
I got Vista Business Eng x64 and everything runs ok -
@ bbasra
Here are the Bluetoothdriver inside, which will work:
hxxp://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=4030916&postcount=72
Do you could help me out too?
Regards, VaioZ21 -
The WWAN card is probably disabled therefore not being shown in Device Manager.
Use VAIO Smart Network to enable WWAN.
If you don't see this the floating grey window with WWAN, WLan Bluetooth etc, install VAIO Smart Network. Can can be accessible via Sony Control Centre.
http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/downloads/info/info.asp?site=voe_en_GB_cons&url=VAIO/Updates/EP0000157361.exe&ip=EP0000157361.htm
Windows should then find unknown device and prompt you for drivers. Have the contents of the drivers extracted and point the device installer to this path. You will have to do this around 6 times as there are different HSDPA drivers that needs to be installed. Just keep pointing it to the same path and all of them will installed. Same Windows does not remember the path and continue to install. -
Many thanks @ bbasra!
Now works all perfekt, only my Benchmark Speed is a little bit low, i think
3Dmark03 with Vista Ultimate 64
2956 Punkte with Intel 4500 and Stamina-Mode
5867 Punkte with 9300M GS on Power Mode
3DMark06 with Vista Ultimate 64
1446 Punkte with 9300M GS on Power Mode
But for working, there is much enough Power - only for Gaming, there is a new Grafikdriver needed, i think
-
No worries. Glad it works.
I've also been the latest Z21 drivers which are 32\64bit to get the DVD drive to switch off but no luck :-(
I only seems to be getting around 2.5-3 hours battery. Will check and play around my power settings. -

Well that was a stupid question on my part (Above). I got so excited about potentially using more than 4gb on the machine that i didn't realize that it uses DDR3 ram which at the moment doesn't come in a 4gb dimm laptop flavor.
Though i do have a new question, the vista 64 install dvd keeps on seeing the efi/gpt hdd issue. I know it was asked earlier in the thread but it never seemed to get answered. Is there a way around this? It seems that a lot of you have been able to do a fresh install. -
could some one tell me if the z2 series drivers are 32/64 bit ?
-
What is efi/gpt issue? I install Vista x64 on a new 500 gig HD and no problem last week.
I am going to install the x64 again today. It seems like I didnt do it right. -
Just to repeat the already repeated. EFI disks are for "soft BIOS" systems. GPT disks are really only benefifical after you pass 2TG drive sizes. Stick MBR with an active partition.
Just load your windows installer, go into repair, select the dos prompt and do a diskpart.
Delect your drive, use the "clean" command then:
"create partition primary n=46080"
then run "active"
This will give you a 45GB OS partition for the OS and ley you use the rest for storage.
This will make the drive bootable with a system partition.
Chong67, I've been watching your posts. This isn't meant to be derogatory, but I homestly don't think you are quite ready to do this type of thing. -
Hi all,
I found on the web a new driver versions for WWAN card, the Option GTM378 card.
GTconnect version: 3.0d
Driver version: 4.0.3
the uploaded file has x86 and x64 versions..
Hope this will help somebody!

Sorry about all the confusion, went over the thread a few times and couldnt seem to find an answer to how to deal with the installer saying it couldn't install to a efi/gpt partition. I figured i'd have to do it manually with diskpart (similar to setting up a linux/unix system), but since it was the first time i've ever come across this particular error/message while installing windows on a machine i thought i'd triple check. But either way thanks for the reply. Long time reader of this forum (sony v505, s150, sz-230 and now z590), you guys never disappoint. -
Has anybody tried installing 8gb of ram on this notebook. You can buy 4gb DDR3 sticks for about $150 each....I know that's expensive but it would be awesome to have 8gb on this thing....Also, did you all buy a 64bit version of vista or will sony supply that.
-
where did you find 4gb DDR3 sticks? I checked newegg real quick and didn't see any...

http://www.provantage.com/crucial-technology-memory-ct2kit51264bc1067~7CIAL5Y1.htm
Mfr. Part # CT2KIT51264BC1067
Made by Crucial, so you know its good stuff.
And provantage is a trusty place as well. -
Install it and let us now.
At $1211 price tag ??? -
With that price It's better to upgrade HD to SSD not 4GB to 8GB.
-
Still no solution?
-
I didnt miss it. They are not important, are there?
The 4gb memory and faster running is priceless to me.
Just install the x64. -
For me, they are. Battery life is, well, life. The tweaks the Sony power plans provide are significant.
-
Not that I know of. This is the only reason I'm not running x64.
-
Please ZoinksS2k let us know when you find something : )

Can somebody with x64 install this version of the Sony Utilities?
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNAW170Y&upd_id=3926&os_id=36
from the site:
This utility installs the originally shipped version of the following Sony® Notebook Utilities:
Sony Shared library 5.1
Battery Checker 3.0
Setting Utility Series 4.1
Sony Video Shared library 3.4
VAIO® Control Center 3.1
VAIO Event Service 4.1
VAIO Power Management 3.1
VAIO Launcher 2.1
Operating System(s): Microsoft® Windows Vista® Ultimate 64-bit
It is newer than the version I used previously. I won't be able to test for a while. -
This is what I am running, without VAIO Launcher, of course. I also excluded Video Shared library, for now. The battery checker is the same version (3.0) as the default one for the Z series. The others are the same as for the SR series (x64 version).
To install these, all you have to do is unpack the file with universal extractor (I prefer e-wise unpacker option) and you will get each of these utilities in a separate folder. Universal extractor can be found at http://legroom.net/software/uniextract -
What other power teaks are there? Turn off hard drive after 5 min, etc etc
The switch between stamina and speed.
I didnt know there are more tweaks by Sony. -
read the manual
-
1. Advanced power management. No Auto-Off DVD, lower refresh/color depth on battery, no Sony Vaio power plans. This is why I haven't kept x64 on the machine.
All of my power plans work including the battery care function..but no DVD pwr off. -
Tried installing vista ultimate 64bit today. Got stuck at 2 devices which i assumed are the SonyPI and the SFEP. However when i tried the PI and SFEP driver on each of the 2 unknowns, none worked, it just said it was the wrong driver. i am using the driver set firestone posted.
what i did was select update driver @ device manager and pointed to both drivers for each of the 2 unknowns.
have installed every other device driver less these 2. have not installed any utility. -
Easiest way to get the get the unknown ones fixed is to download one of the driver packs in this thread. Extract the archives to a central directory (multiple folders is fine), set Windows off on the root of that directory from the install drivers wizard. Windows will find the right ones.
I'd venture a guess that one is the I/O Firmware Parser, second could be the Intel AHCI storage controller or one of the Ricoh memory card reader bays. There are two, Memory Stick and SD Bus host. -
Thanks for the reply. The MS and SD drivers are already installed and running. The Intel AHCI is also installed and running.
The two left that I can't install are the SPEP and SonyPI i am certain. Just that the supplied driver for some reason don't work. Anyway i will try again once official drivers are out for this. reverting back to 32bit vista. -
my Vista x64 Z590 is reporting 3 gig total physical rams though I got 4 gigs of ram. From the looks of it it seems that the Shared System Memory is taking 1245 MB. Is there a way for me to get this back? I want to have 4 gigs ram not 3 gigs.....
-
you need 64 bit version of sfep and sony pi
http://www.vaio-link.com/os/vista/64bit/ -
How do I get the x64 drivers only for the built in webcam?
Do I need to install the webcam software to get to it or this is the only way to get the drivers to work. -
euchrid_eucrow Notebook Consultant
This version of the utilities worked for me, i now have the vaio power management tab under vista's native advanced power management dialog.
Though for some reason it re-enabled UAC which i usually keep off. Not a big deal, just kind of odd. -
And you can selectively enable/disable hardware, lower the screen refresh rate, etc?
The utility does reenable UAC. Acts strangely when you permenantly disable it through vLite. Sure there is some reason for it, just an annoyance that is easily re-disabled. -
euchrid_eucrow Notebook Consultant
Seems that way...pretty much the same as D1330HI's post at the top of this page. The sony power plans seem to be working fine, including the color quality setting and selective disabling of the i.link, memory cards, pc card and modem. Though no auto dvd shutoff as we've all gotten used to in this thread as well as no smart wi gadget docking.
Yeah UAC was just odd, but for what its worth i don't find it nearly as annoying as most do, unfortunately some of the older software at work won't let me see network shares with it turned on.
edit:
Though for some reason i don't get any of the vaio settings when i go through "vaio status monitor" they ARE present under advanced power management and under "vaio control center => power management" however.
