I'm using 7100 and it installed the driver for me. For the 2 utilities, I think you mean, VAIO Camera Capture Utility and Camera Utility which comes from Sony. I just can't find where to download them. The camera driver I downloaded from Sony won't install.
I tried using the Recovery Utility to recover utilities and apps but when I started the Camera Capture, it said no input.

MODEL: TZ398U
BUILD: 7100 x64
I cannot seem to get the brightness keys to work.
I also need sony's power management.
Could someone please help me? -
I had also found the Fn keys were not working on a UK spec TZ21WN. I had loaded the Sony shared library utils but this had not helped.
Finally cracked it - here is a summary of how I got the Fn keys working:
after a clean install of Win7 RC1 and the Sony Shared Library utils installed.
I had an unknown device in device manager
Opened the properties for this device - selected Update driver s/w
selected 'browse my computer'
selected 'let me pick from a list.....'
select 'Human Interface devices'
select 'have disk'
pick the Sonync.inf file in the SFEP directory of the Vista driver set. Now here another issue. The files have to be moved to a top level directory or it wont find them (just copy them to a root directory temporarily)
This should be recognised as the Sony Firmware Extension Parser - and once installed the unknown device in the control panel changes to a HID entry and everything worked!
Please note that Sony say the drivers should be loaded in the following order:
Sony Notebook Control (if applicable)
Sony Programmable I/O (if applicable)
Sony Shared Library
I did not do this (had installed shared library first) and have noticed some standby power issues.
Hope this helps! -
sony esupport is where you get the drivers...unless you are running x64 then some of the driver wont work.
I've gotten everything I need to work now..AV buttons, volume, brightness, all FN keys work.
I have been running windows 7 on my desktop for quite sometime but this RC build seems a lot snappier. It just looks so clean on the TZ with the screen and all...I have not noticed any other issues worth addressing.
If anyone needs help just ask...=D -
-
none of the SFEP folders have "sonync.inf" I downloaded all the SFEP packages available, and none had them. they all had SFEP.SYS -
They are all called SonyNC, with a sys file, a dll, the INF and the security catalog file.
another example of how frustrating this machine is, after install of the SFEP driver and a change of SIM card in the WWAN module - the WWAN stopped working in Win7. If I booted back to XP it worked fine.
Tried reinstalling the WWAN drivers - nothing.
Installed the XP version of the wireless switch setting utility - and it immediately enabled the WWAN and disabled the WLAN!
so now I have to try and the WLAN working again which had worked flawlessly with the default Win7 drivers. -
is their an offical release date for windows 7 yet?
-
So far they are saying Christmas 2009
-

Well I had trouble getting the 64 bit to work properly with webcam, FN keys, a/v keys, etc. as a platform, it worked fine, but i had better luck with the 32 bit, so i'm switching back this weekend. As previous posters stated, installing the library and utilities in the correct order is a requirement. What i don't know is that if you install in the wrong order, can you go back and re do it without fresh Windows install. that would be good info if there is definititve answer. might be my problem with this 64 bit.
Anybody using Kaspersky? i know they have a beta that can be used with Windows 7 RC, but it ALWAYS blocks my attempts to save Office documents as PDF. I have to "pause" protection. annoying. -
Anybody here use the touchpad feature that allows you to go forward and back in a window? If I have "Visual feedback"on, where it shows you a graphics "Forward/back" button, it stays on the screen and gets stuck. Does this happen to you? Anybody know how to update the video drivers? I'm guessing that's what is causing it.

As I posted earlier, the 64 bit edition was giving me issues so I'm back to the 32 bit RC. I have A/V, function keys (brightness and volume) working. Not having luck wiht the camera though. Getting no input. wasn't able to install the file on Sony's esupport. It just flat won't launch the exe file without errors. everything else seems to be working just fine, and i plan to post a how to when i get camera working. hope rest of you are enjoying Windows 7.
-
I have a Tz 150 though i could not manage to work the brightness keys my camera driver works..Try right clicking on the installation file of the camera driver properties and then compatilibity choose windows vista and run as administrator after that everything was ok for me
-
i've had success with everything on my tz150n EXCEPT the smartwi utility. I use sprint's EVDO service and would really love to get this last feature working if at all possible.
Has anyone had luck getting the smartwi utility to work? When I attempt to "turn on" any of my wireless options (wifi/bt/sprint) I receive an error that says my hardware switch is off and I need to turn it on. It gives me this error regardless of what position the hardware switch actually is in.
Has anyone had more success with this than I have? -
-
has anyone been able to get the webcam to work on x64?
-
Hi. Ive just get new hdd for my TZ. Can somebody pack and upload drivers with final how to? Ive used AIO packages from vaio site because single exe files cant install - they stop with "not for your model" message (i have TZ from japan). I still cant get brightness working. Thx
EDIT: It works now but Im not sure why
OT: Showing only two power schemes in notification area (next to time) pis* me off. -
Just a head's up, apparently, Sony's Power Management Viewer is finicky and only works with certain builds.
See thread: http://www.neowin.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t746282.html
For the record, Windows 7x32-7260 and Sony's VAIO Power Management v2.1.0.13100 (directly off esupport.sony.com for my TZ160C) do not work. I'm trying out other versions.
I stupidly clicked "Yes" when it asked to shut down my ethernet/wired network adapter to save power and couldn't get back in to turn power back on to the device. (SPMView.exe crashes, despite any compatibility settings.)
- Marvel Yukon 88E8055 doesn't show up in Device Manager so you can't go to the Properties, Power Tab and reactivate
UPDATE: Found a version that WORKS! v2.4.02.04070
http://esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=VGNTZ250N&upd_id=4579&os_id=29
Make sure to use Troubleshoot Compatibility:
- requires additional permissions [administrator]
- runs under previous version of Windows [Vista, SP2] -
Hi, ive just updated to Windows 7, managed to get everything working except for the optical drive and the camera. Can anyone help? Ive tried all the downloads on the vaio site with no joy...Thanks!!
-
As for the optical drive, it's very strange that it doesn't work. Does it work when you were installing Windows? And does the device manager detect your drive? -
Ill try and follow that after thanks.
Ya it worked fine before hand, stopped working when i installed 7. This is the message im getting when i try to open it. Also it doesn't show up in my computer menu. Is there a particular software from the vaio update site i need to install?
-
By the way, VAIO update doesn't really do anything actually. It's just there and notifies you if there's any update on your model, which you might get one once or twice in a decade. It will also try to start up with Windows, eating cpu, memory and makes your laptop a little slower. So I don't recommend installing VAIO Update. -
This is what it shows up on device manager

I've installed Windows 7 32bit ed. with drivers & order mentioned above, all work just great !
I still have 1 problem with Battery charging.
it stops charging at 80% ! it said connected to AC adapter not charing while it's just 80% !
Is it software problem or a hardware (my battery getting dead??)
Anyone encounter this problem ???
thanks in advance -
Hi,
Please excuse this rather basic question!
If Microsoft issue a Windows 7 upgrade disk will I be able to upgrade simply, keeping all the sony utilities and HSPDA modem etc?
Is there an advatage to a clean install and is it difficult, it seems pretty complicated to me..........
Thanks -
A little tip. When you install the drivers from Sony install it in a flash drive or any re-writable media. Before running any file, tweak the program's compatibility properties.
All the programs i ran i made the program "ran as compatible with Windows Vista, then i also ticked the "Run as administrator" item. All of the programs ran without any of them saying that the program was designed for another program. -
Does anyone have the webcam running on a 64 bit version of 7?
Found the answer in this thread:
http://www.ralphg.com/public/ -
anyone try retail windows 7 on tz yet?
-
I upgraded my vaio TZ 31VN/X to Windows 7 professional retail version from Windows Vista Business and all original drivers (did a semi-clean install) and it works fine. Every drivers are recognized.
About WWAN, Install the WWAN GlobeTrotter Connect from XP downgraded will enable you to use WWAN on any windows 32 bit at all (the drivers will work). I dont know if it works on 64 bit or not. For newer driver version of WWAN, check out my post on the other thread about how to flash your firmware in order to use newer driver and 7.2 mbps capability here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5448652&postcount=1164
Note that it is only applicable to GTM378e module, which is the european one. If you have another region module, you may have to check if it's GTM378 or not. If it is, proceed at your own risk. If it is not then I am sorry but I don't know the solution.
Hope this helps. -
is there a wireless switch setting utility for vista/win7 ?
-
yes, its called the setting utility on the downloads.
-
Installed win 7 Enterprise on my TZ31 this afternoon and all is well following the instructions on this thread. Actually Windows/windows update found all the drivers including the sony ones.
-
Got webcam to work with sony tz240n windows 7 ultimate x64, so happy, but will not work with the sony capture utility I used this video to install it, just follow what he is doing and you'll have a working webcam. I installed the Ricoh one, got the driver from the link that ducati provided. Here is the video post,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4JfrKpbXnlA&feature=player_embedded (big/massive up/respect to that guy who provided the video!)
we should use another capture program, not sure yet, will post when I get some capture program to work, unlesss you fellows have a suggestion.
I personally only use the webcam for gmail video chat and Fb. So not a biggie for me, but would like to have a program in the future.
Ducati, thanks for the link, your a life saver, just had trouble installing the driver but the video I posted above helps massively! Big up bro!
Everything is good to go, just some system hiccups, under "other devices" i still have Base system Device" that have no drivers, and question marks for them. tried to update through windows but no success.
Any ideas for this? and I'm not sure if my microphone and bluetooth drivers are working, help please if you can point me in the right direction, thanks!
FYI, for the ethernet (wired connection) you have to install the marvell driver at there website.
this is the driver I used....
http://www.marvell.com/drivers/driverDisplay.do?driverId=175,
works flawlessly.
I had to hunt for some of the driver's cause they arent supported by sony (x64). -
Hi,
I am running Win7 Enterprise x32 on my TZ-11XN/B succesfully since a month or so now. The majority of drivers installed are the ones mentioned in this thread so far with the exception of SFEP 8.0.1 and SPIC 8.0.1 which were found and installed through Windows Update. That lead me to thinking - has anyone tried out Win7 native versions of Sony's Notebook utilities, mainly Event Service, Power Mgr and Setting Utility Series and so forth? Those are mostly versions 5.0+, something might have changed?
If anyone is using the updated drivers and utilities, please report back both successes and failures. -
For those running Windows 7 64 bit on their TZ, any luck getting the SD card reader to be recognized? Initially, both the MS and the SD card weren't working, but found that the Z series MS slot driver works.
Still trying to get the SD reader working... would appreciate any help.
Thanks. -
why would you want 64bit on the TZ?
-
hello everyone! Like barrman and alvina before me I'm also stuck with an error "Please turn on the hardware switch and try again!". I'm on a TZ21MN and clean install of W7 and have started by installing the shared library, then the sonyutils DLL and only them move towards the smart network and the setting utility... it's a shame the trouble with the wifi because otherwise it's almost spot on! any ideas/recommendations? might it make sense to try to reinstall vista and carry on with an upgrade has some users have testified?
thanks!
Update: after a long night sleep i wake up to find the front button illuminated and the wifi working.. not sure exactly what happened (autoupdates maybe?) but it's properly solved -
how did you guys install vista drivers on win7?
when i tried to install the vista drivers on win7, some of them won't let me install saying it's not compatible with the operating system. -
Hi all, I have sucessfuly installed Win 7 Professional 32bit on my TZ-390. However I have noticed a power management problem - I want to see if any of your guys have similar issue?
Basically the battery drains even after a toal power off (not sleep or hibernate, but shut down complete).
When I ws running Vista, I will have battery reserve even after a few weeks of not turning the TZ on after a shu down.
Now with Win 7, the battery continues to drain and after 3 days it will become totally empty (0%) charge. This is really annoying, it's as if the PC is left in sleep mode rather than a totl shut down! -
With regard to the virtualization, will this affect us?
http://www.pcworld.com/businesscent...ows_7_xp_mode_loses_hardware_requirement.html -
I windows 7 clean installed my TZ160C. I can not, though, install some of Sony unitlities. The web cam, Fn keys and memory reader would not work.
I went to sony esupport and downloaded all drivers, but some of them would not be installed. Where did I do wrong? What is a UAC and what does it mean "disabling the UAC"? -
UAC is User Access Control. It can be disabled through the msconfig utility. Google to find exact instructions.

How to install Winodws 7 on Sony VGN-TZ36SN
I have successfully installed Windows7 32bit on the Sony VGN-TZ36SN with R0081N7 BIOS I got second hand recently and thought some people might find the instructions interesting as there was quite some trial and error was involved.
I got everything to work, including volume, brightness controls, wifi, LAN, modem, wireless switch, bluetooth, camera, fingerprint software, sleep, hibernation, etc.
First I must say as much as I like the hardware, the Sony firmware / driver support is absolutely horrible, I have installed quite a few notebooks / dektops over the years, but the TZ36SN was the one giving me the most headache because Sony provides no firware upgrades and almost no driver upgrades on their support websites for this 3 year old notebook. In addition the drivers that are available are scattered through FTP sites and various websites and are badly labeled, i.e. mostly no version numbers and not even indicating if they are for Vista or XP. You would think if you have a high end notebook that cost almost 2000 USD at the time it was released they would at least supply some driver updates or installation instructions for Windows 7, but nothing. Damn, even Acer had better support than Sony. For this reason alone I would not buy a Sony notebook again.
Having said that here the instructions on how Windows 7 can be successfuly installed on the TZ36SN. I have listed only essential components without the Sony bloatware.
Hardware wise you should consider to at least upgrade the RAM to the maximum 2GB as Windows 7 runs much smoother with more memory.
1) First install Windows 7 32bit (I used Ultimate) from DVD. It will during installation automatically install most drivers.
After complete installation go to Windows update and install all available updates. This is important as it will install some more missing drivers.
2) After this install the 'Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable' from Microsoft here :
h t t p : / / w w w . microsoft . com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=200b2fd9-ae1a-4a14-984d-389c36f85647
This is necessary for the Sony Power Management to work properly. If you do not install this you will see some errors about missing dependancies in the Event log regarding the Sony Power Management and it will not work correctly
Now in the device manager there should be only 2 unknown base devices which do not have drivers, these are the drivers for the SD card and Memory Stick slots.
3) Download and install ONLY the follwing Vista drivers and utilities from this Website IN THE SAME ORDER as listed :
h t t p : / / w w w . sony-asia . com/support/download/241275/product/vgn-tz36sn/sectionfirst?subpage=detail
Reboot if requested
- NC driver
- MS Driver
- SD Driver
- Camera (the generic driver detected by Windows 7 does not work)
- Sony Shared Library
- Event Service
go to folder C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Event Service and right click on VESmgr.exe and VESmgeSub.exe and set 'Run as Administrator' in compatibility tab, reboot
- Control Center
- Settings Utility
4) From here
h t t p : / / w w w . sony-asia . com/support/download/product/vgn-tz36sn/modelfirst
download the following updated drivers and install :
- VAIO Updated Original Function settings V 2.0.2.02240
- VAIO Updated Power Management 2.4.02.04070
- VAIO Smart Network Upgrade Program Version 2.0.1.11050
5) install the newest version of the touchpad driver 'POINTING_DRIVER_ALPS_7.5A_7.5.505.309' from
f t p : / / ftp . vaio-link . com/pub/Vaio/Original/
there are other updated drivers and utiltities on this site but I could not figure out which ones work thanks to Sony not providing any info in the readme files, I tried some and they did not work. You can set system restore points and try if you want.
6) install the native Windows 7 fingerprint software (PS 2009 32bit) from
h t t p : / / w w w . upek . com/support/downloads/windows7/learnmorew7.asp
The unregistered free version works fine.
7) to make the internal microphone work with Skype change the default mic in Control Panel, Sound, Recording to the one on 'Analog Jack'
Now you should have a perfectly working Windows 7 on the TZ36SN !
Thanks to the other posters in this forum, I used some of their links and suggestions.
P.S. I am not allowed to post URLs, so I had to disguise them, just delete all the spaces -
Picked up my TZ21MN 4 days ago for a stunningly low price of £235!! It's a refurb and a customer return (previous owner had it for 2 days). All boxed with all accessories, immaculate condition...needless to say I'm chuffed.
The laptop has just 1GB of RAM and the standard 100GB HD. I'm not looking into SSD just yet as a decent one will cost more than what I paid for the laptop itslef.
The only bit of bloatware I have so far removed is Norton and the machine is still pretty much unusable as it's extremely slow.
I've already ordered a 2GB stick of RAM from ebay which should arrive in the next 2 days.
I will be installing Windows 7 once the RAM arrives otherwise it will take forever in its current state.
Now I have a few questions: Should I install the 32 bit version or the 64 bit? What's the difference? I just a smooth running OS that's all.
Also, I want to save the current Vista Business recovery partition just in case I want to revert the laptop to factory settings in future.. If I make a recovery DVD then is it OK for me to delete the recovery partition on the HD to free up a bit of space?
Any advice and answers to my questions will be much appreciated, thanks. -
Today after work bought a Full Version of WIN 7 PRO 32 BIT and went home to do a CLEAN INSTALL on my SONY VAIO TZ298N/XC ---- Previously I was on VISTA 32 (CLEAN INSTALL)
1.Installation took > 50 min
2.Downloaded all the updates = 30 > 20 min
3.Downloaded GOOGLE CHROME to start setting up SONY'S DRIVERS
4.The installation method was the one quoted below <> STEP BY STEP
5.Final result ..... 100./. workable TZ> FN'S 1 > 6 + SPRINT WWAN
6.VISTA 32 - SSD = 59.7 GB = 39.8 FREE
WIN 7 59.7 GB = 49.9 FREE
Screenshot of Clean Install
Now next step .> UPGRADE MY SSD

zimbros12, were you able to get the buttons on the front right side to work (the AV mode buttons, with play/stop/eject/etc)?
And did you use the drivers for Win 7 or Vista? I know that might be a stupid question, but I had succeeded (to get all the FN keys to work) in the past using Vista drivers on win7. Plus there is no "Sony Programmable I/O Control Device Driver" on the new Win7 driver page. Indeed that order that you quoted worked great, and all the buttons and function keys work perfectly.
I did a clean install last night and used win7 drivers available on sony's site. Failed miserably.
I have a TZ250N
Windows 7 on Sony TZ
