I have the same versions. I think I might have discovered something that is causing me the problems. After every reboot the value set at HKLM/Software/Sony Corporation/Vaio Event Service/MachineInfo/MachineID is reset to 39. According to Centjie this should be set at 82, but somehow my machine keeps setting it back to 39 every time I change it.

Yep mine is set at 82, and as far as I know, doesn't change after every reboot.

Are you sure you have the right vesconfig.ini. I never had to edit my registry. I've attached mine. Put it in

    C:\Program Files\Sony\VAIO Event Service

Thanks for uploading the file but it does not seem to work :(

May I ask which model of the Vaio you use? I have the VGN-TZ90HS with SSD and DVD ordered from pricejapan. It was delivered to them on the 1st of August, so maybe I just have a slighty newer revision that requires different steps to work properly?

I have the tz90hs with the 160g HD. No ssd, no dvd.

How about creating a new 39 entry in the vesconfig.ini and copy the config for entry 82 and see if that solves the problem.

I looked in the vesconfig.ini and there is no 39 entry so thats why none of your settings are working.

Thank you for the tip. Sadly enough that didn't work either. I'm now running vista basic and, besides the fact that booting windows takes about twice as long, things seem to be okish (I did completely strip the thing down as far as possible). Another major disadvantage is that it takes up about 3 times as much HD space as xp.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully Sony releases the official xp utilities soon.

Yeah I do notice that xp boots up a lot faster and goes into standby/resume much faster than vista as well.

And this is after I stripped everything in vista too.

I do like vista aero, but I like the performance boost in xp better. :)

CentJie you are my hero...thanks all the way from Australia.

I recently posted my issue with drivers after downgrading to Windows XP SP2 on my Sony Vaio VGN-C21GH. After reading your thread, which you indicated it took you 24hours to complete the driver installation (well most drivers), I though I would give it a crack. Luckily your thread cut my time to 12 hours.

Im not worried about battery managment and all those extra utilities as my notebook is for home/personal use. It's always plugged through the AC adaptor.

    Here were the drivers missing:

now look at the device manager:

The following are all working now:

    • NIC
    • Wireless NIC
    • Sony Memory stick pro duo slot
    • Modem
    • USB 2.0 now active
    • VGA
    • Sound
    • Bluetooth
    • Chipset

Perfect !! Everything is in good workng order :)

I will upload all the drivers I used on m Vaio to rapidshare and create a new thread for anyone else looking to downgrade to Windows XP SP2

    Thanks again CentJie !!

    I got a problem here.
When I use a XP Pro disc to boot my TZ17GN, blue screen shows up.
Then I try to do a bios flash by using the one I found on this thread.
It doesn't work because "BIOS image verification failed".

    What can I do?

PS. Does hibernate work on those XP TZ?

    thanks

Any chance you can tell me WHICH BX4 utlities/zip files to install? They are numbered 1-12 + the Optional TPM? Or should I install all 13 if I want everything to work?

Note I have the TZ50B which had japanese vista on it & a ajp keyboard (i cannot speak/read japanese but i saved a bundle by buying this) & I want XP Pro (english) working properly on it.

Any advice will be appreceiated! Especially which BX4 programs to install.

A question regarding the drivers. I have a HK-version of the TZ.
    TZ17 (1.2ghz 100gig)... with Chinese/English Vista.

I want to install XP SP2, swedish.
What drivers should I use in the first hand.

    1. TZ XP Drivers, but not specific for HK-version
    ftp://ftp.vaio-link.com/pub/OS/XPDOWNGRADE/TZ1/

    2. TZ VISTA Drivers for HK, version
    http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/214533/product/vgn-tz17gn/modelfirst?site=hp_en_AP_i

I really want to use the Sony vaio power schemes and settings, such as
Vaio Optimized or Ultimate Battery to get the best battery time.
The standard XP power settings dont let me adjust all the setting
that are available as the Sony Power settings...

Summary of my succesful Windows XP installation on my TZ17.

    Used "theory" ;)
    * Centjies post (Thanks Centjie and everyone in this thread.)
    * Lack of sleep ver2, japanese guide
    http://tinyurl.com/36gtqa

Installed a clean XP Corp Pro (Swedish)
Installed all the TZ XP downgrade drivers.
Installed (3 of 5) Centjies aka. "I came across updates"
    - Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0.
    - KB893357
    - the WLAN API for Windows XP SP2
    - MS Fix for multi processors
NOT - Fix for hibernation problems. Because it doesnt work for Swedish XP (I used extractor). But my TZ can sleep and wake up... havent tried Hibernate yet.
Installed Sony TZ and TX3 utils, according to Lack of sleep ver2 instructions.
    Installed all Windows updates available.

    Everything working including FN-keys, except
    * The front buttons work. But pushing the specific AV Mode button doesnt bring up the AV Mode Launcher menu as in Vista.

    * The fan works "too" good. Even with no programs and Ultimate Battery settings it goes on for 20sec and off for 10sec and on for 20sec again. Very very annoying!

    ----------------------------------------------------------
TZ drivers/utils not working under XP, I have tried!!!
    * VAIO Status Monitor
    * VAIO Diagnostics
    * VAIO Power Management
    * VAIO Video Drivers, TZ Vista

    ----------------------------------------------------------
Small issues/This is what I discovered

When I used the VAIO Optimzed theme on battery with disabled DVD I got like 8h of standby, under VISTA. Same with XP I only get around 6h. Any power saving settings that XP miss, or maybe TX3 applic miss.

In the beginning just after I had installed XP and some drivers I think my CPU could downthrottle to 789 Mhz. But now when everything works with all updates in, it seems like the CPU is stuck to 1200 Mhz even with no programs running...

With the XP Downgrade drivers I get only 64 Mb.
Vista showed variable size 8-256 Mb

Multiple settings in the power management for the same things.
Such as several settings for disable modem, modem/audio etc.
But no more settings for disable SD reader...
But this is the TX3 XP Power Management.

    ----------------------------------------------------------

Please notify me if you discover new findings.

The unknown unit is the felica port.

You can throttle your cpu using rmclock. Do a google on it.

What is "lack of sleep v2?"

    Felica port...
Oki according to some googling it is a Japan only function?
What is it? I will disable it in device manager.

RMClock... Aha some freeware for down throttling. Might try it.
But weird that the the existing down-throttle
    disappeared after some update/driver installing.
Maybe a Intel Speedstep driver will solve it.
Anyway shouldnt a driver supporting this be available
    from Intels or MS?

Lack of sleep is a japanese guide for TZ Vista - XP
    You provided the link http://tinyurl.com/36gtqa

:( Discovered that my mic port seems little loose,
hopefully nothing that needs to be repaired.
I plug in a 3.5mm conn to the headphone-port very
good "fitting". When I tried the mic-port the conn.
    seemed quite loose... Anyone else?

    Im going crazy...

I have tried everything to get my mic working.
But no no, the built-in is dead and the mic-port also.
Device Mgr reports no problem, but it just dont work.
Its greyed out in all XP settings, skype, msn etc.
Dont want to recover Vista to see if it worked there...
Maybe I even buy a USB Mic, I dont want to send my TZ away.

Guys, do you have a working mic under XP?

bmnotpls thanks for trying your mic ;)

I thought that the TZ cant have any problem, right.
Oki beside the 1mm chink in the touchpad (see my thread).
Its not even 2w old... and no other one reporting faulty mics.

So I decided to recover Vista, and guess what.
"Both" mics works... So some winupdate or
    driver is causing my mic-of-dead-symtom.

Also when I called Sony in Eu bcz I bought a "Overseas service" in HK when I got the unit. They say that my unit is not registred under OS service. Meanwhile HK Sony claims that they have registred my unit. But apparently the Sony system cant communicate. Lucky me that I dont have to use any repair-service, not a HW-related...

Seems like the problems are coming one by one.

    @ Kevin2dx
When you wrote "...brightness shortcuts to work?..."
I guess mean the fn + increase/decrase keys right?

Mine started working, when I followed this guide.
    http://tinyurl.com/36gtqa

Follow the procedure after this sentence.
"From the recovery disk of *TZ
    Sony Shared Library"

    When you have reached
"6) When it restarts, it reaches the point where Fn key + Fx and the like operates just."

Fn keys works for volume and brightness, havent tried screen-output and the
other fn keys but they should work.

    SEVERAL THINGS:

Firstly, I just soleved my microphone problem!

It was not the drivers but the record volume set to near zero.

Go to >> master volume > Options > Properties > & change mixer device to Realtek HD Audio Input & then fiddle with the volumes under this.

Let me know if this solves the problem for those who have it.

On a different note, don't forget to save hardware profiles as this can be a lifesaver down the track.

I still have a problem with the Infineon TPM - the ZIp file in the BX4 utils does not work properly - it appears to extract ok but then the install fails at the last minute. Is there something I might be doing wrong here??

BTW my AV buttons work with the instal on - or is this built into the hardware & is the case for everyone?? They are only really useful for this feature in any case..

How am I SUPPOSED to activate save to disk? ie: if it is workign where's the control for it? Is this Fn+F12? Is so mine does nto work, but is there a software activation for it as well?

I have the Japanaese version TZ50B & there is a small tiny port for what looks like an external WiFi antenna (the box has an attachement for it which ends in a male antenna connector) - the out put is located just to the left below the external monitor connector - any ideas on what this is exactly? My in bilt WiFi & blue tooth works fine....

For save to disk (hibernation), you have to enable it in the xp control panel power options menu.

Don't know about your other problems. I didn't get TPM with my TZ.

is anybody here got TPM module working under XP?
i have everything installed, including camera, felica port, wify switch :), all of sony hotkeys for volume and brightness but not that f..g TPM :(

BTW no need to install .NET crap, none of sony tools use it.
the only tool you need is WIFI API to get your bluetooth and wireless switch work properly.

also i found that there is NO correct sony power manager available under XP, none of them work properly with internal sony USBCD, 1394 and wired networks card. i did try a lot of versions, even with configs of original TZ , but they cant get you better results than using of standard XP power manager. Most of them work incorrectly with ports and devices.

thats why under XP you will have around 5-6 hours of work instead of 7-8 under vista.

The AV buttons at the front of my TZ work!!

I should clarify: If a DVD or CD is inserted & I push play it will work. also if I have Media player open with list of songs to play the firn buttons will work (play/pause, fwd, back, stop). And the instant on state works perfectly although i beleive this is built into the hardware? Does this work for others?

...i have no idea how i got them to work though, but could check if it is worthwhile to everyone....

Please tell me where to find a driver for the felica port -the vista driver wont work for me & the one referred to in "lack of sleep" is rejected also... where can i find it?

I cant get TPM working either but it does come up as named but not installed properly. ......What BIOS setting should I use? Note that the ZIP file for the TPM under theTZ1 drvers appears to have errors in it. i have downloaded it 3 times & extracted it 3 times.

I also wonder about the parts of VAIO central that do not work; get a "you cant launch" error for:
    printer port;
    monitor off button setting;
    S button (where is the special button anyway?);
    Touch panel;
    bass boost
if i click "initial settin" i get no response.
and what the heck is ISB Utiliy???
...im not even sure if these features exist - i guess they are turned on/off in the VESConfig.ini file?? Any advice? I have jap model TZ50B

Yeah I've noticed this as well, what I do is I disable the devices (1394, wired gigabit, memstick, camera, modem etc) I don't use in the device manager and I get close to vista's battery life. Around 5 hours with the medium (standard) battery.

ISB Utility is the application from Sony called Battery Checker, I guess it meausures the battery or something.

How often are your fans running min goes on for 30 secs then off for 10 sec and on for 30 secs again = ANNOYING AS HELL !
This happen even when I have no programs running. Adjusting the cpu fan control, thermal control and the system temperature settings dont change anything.

How are yours under XP? Does it run all the time, on and off, or maybe mostly off when no heavy stuff loaded?

Instead of creating a programs folder in the start menu containing all the utilities pertaining to your model, Sony decided to make them accessible in this VAIO Central program, which is pretty useless in my opinion. If you want to access any of the utilities in VAIO Central, they are all located in \Program Files\Sony and shortcuts to these utilities can be made at your own discretion.

ISB Utility or Battery Checker only checks to see if a genuine Sony battery is inserted and gives a shut down error message if one isn't inserted. It doesn't do much else like give you more battery life.

    Hardware ID: ACPI/IFX0102
    InstanceID: IFX0102
    CompatibleID: PNP0C31

both Infineon and ST Microsystem TPM modules use this ID.
but none of their XP drivers work with it :(

under VISTA its supplied by internal Microsoft driver, not Infineon or STMicro.

That is strange, none of these things work in my vaio central, except from the S-button which when pressed turns my computer into standby mode. I have a TZ90 running Windows Vista. Has anyone else got these to work??

The driver is located in this file under the /Utils Installer (OPTIONAL) Infineon TPM Professional Package/Infineon/TPM Driver directory. Install it from the device manager.

how about ur 50B now? everything works?

mine is 50B also, and my display card doesn't work properly. i've tried several drivers both from sony web(that FTP link) and other sources, but they don't work. the resolution can't be adjusted to 13xx * xxx. which driver u used for 50B?

and the monitor seems has problem also. it also has a "default monitor", i think it should be sony sth. anyone knows why? thanks very much!

i'm going crazy with TZ.

    Tiffay.khar:

i had the same monitor problem where it would not go above 1024 wide after a reboot or two but after lots of iddling (dotn know what actually did it) it fianlly worked i unistalled the driver(s) & reinstalled them a few tiem & i started working. i think the problem is that there is a TV out port which might be seen as a 2nd monitor & if you install drivers to to wrong port first it thinks you have the low res tv monitor ?? not sure but this was the impression i got. try uninstalling until you et 2 ?unknown monitors (one marked with vga compatible) & using device mgr force the driver selection for the NON vga compatible & then reboot - if this fails do it the other way around. if you still have no luck after a lot of tries let me know.

    thanks Ski,

    let me be more specific:

i installed an intergrated XP system which including a general driver for display card. it does go with a wide screen, but has a question mark on device manager. then i installed the driver for TV card, adter that i installed the driver (from sony FTP) for display card. the question mark disappears and the screen works. but after reboot it went back to 1024w. just like urs.

i'm not quite understand your idea....do u mean i may install the TV card in the wrong port? how about uninstall the TV card and go display card first? i gotta try it tonight.

anyway, the driver u used is from the sony FTP link, right?

    @ Ski Kaos & Tiffany.khar

The monitor and resolution was never a problem. If you read the thread it should have information for how it was solved. If you dont install the graphics drivers you will have native resolution but I dont know if you get the 64MB graphic ram. So install the drivers, doesnt matter the VGA or none-VGA one, all are solved when you install drivers. After installation of drivers go into (translated from Swedish XP):
-->Properties for monitor -->Settings -->Advanced -->Monitor -->Uncheck the setting "Hide modes that the monitor cant show..."
Voila, 1366* 768 is avaiable and you can reboot without any changing reso.
