The mic-problem was discussed in this thread. Please read the thread before posting, next time. Here is a short version (swedish trans.).

This is for the built-in mic:
    -->Control panel -->Sound settings -->Alternative -->Properties -->Mixerunit -->Choose the Realtek input -->Front mic.
Check the "choose/use-sqaure) and increase volume.
Try it now with the XP sound recorder/Skype/MSN.

This is a great thread with lofs of info.

XP is running fine now, just figuring out the details now.

    2 questions:
    - What is the driver/software I need to get the brightness keys working?

    - This thread is great but it seems that the info gets updated a lot during the thread. Did anyone make a more concise guide to installing XP on TZ? Or is the first message of this thread still the way to go?

I wish someone could do that as well. I am on the fence with installing XP, if there was an updated guide I would be forever greatfull.

geez come on, put some effort.

Everything is all there if you read this thread.

Its not like people are getting paid to do this. They are doing this out of their free time and good will.

Its here a rough summary of a succesful XP install
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=143899&page=7

Philflow click the tinyurl, solution described there.

Bmnotpls, I agree everything is in the thread, ppl just too lazy to read the posts...

Mr Bonk the TZ Vista utils that works are described in the tinyurl.
The rest, use TX or BX utils... I have also tested some not working see my post, link.

Thanks for your tip. I'd just like to clarify: I am not too lazy to read this thread. I have done so twice.

The problem is, the information is scattered all over the thread. Some of it is very valid, some of it is not.

To someone who has succesfully done it, it would be fairly easy to write a concise guide. I am now at 70%, but if i am finished, i might write a short guide.

I am now at this step:
"then extract the tz event services and copy the vesconfig.ini to the bx4 version."

So i guess the event services from here: http://support.vaio.sony.co.uk/down...1_Utilities.zip&ip=Preinstalled_Utilities.htm

And then where do i specifically copy the vesconfig.ini to?

Edit: I think I found my answer :
Edit 2: yes all function keys working now :)

Did you guys notice the memory is by default clocked to 400 mhz?
How weird... I just put it on 533 Mhz.

I am doing pretty good with my install, but I can't figure out how to get the SD and Memory stick reader installed.

I assume this is pretty simple and I am just missing something.

    Thanks for help in advance!

EDIT: Got it..."the base system driver" are the readers. I just updated from device manager with the file from the tz downgrade ftp.

glad to hear that other people are running xp on the tz.

tz absolutely flies with xp installed. Sony really should do people a favor and have xp as the default os instead of vista.

Have you installed the beta of the SP1 on a TZ and tested it?

Yes, and it's running enormously quick, the performance is much better than regular Vista. I'd even say it's running better than XP.

I've chosen Vista over XP because Vista is on this laptop overall sharper than XP.

I seriously doubt that since the major problem with vista is the aero interface. I have not read anything about sp1 improving the performance of aero.

It is Vista SP1 Beta, I've noticed the difference in opening and installing applications and every OS window opens faster now, the system is overall faster. I'd recommend you to wait for the official SP1 but if you feel that your current Vista just doesn't run as good as you want it then give this SP1 Beta a shot.

By the time Vista SP1 is out, XP should be supported by Sony, and XP SP3 may even be out.

Hello there, this is just a wonderfull forum and knowledge source.

I ve done the Vista downgrading to XP almost successfull.

Im only having troubles with my microphone, i have followed all steps, and is all working but the mic.

Mic input levels are ok, so its not a volumen thing issue, any idea? anybody has experimented microphone problems?

    Thanks
    Rocho

did you have any luck with the MIC on XP at the TZ (mine is TZ170)

QUOTE=cwu02001;2295819]bmnotpls thanks for trying your mic ;)

I thought that the TZ cant have any problem, right.
Oki beside the 1mm chink in the touchpad (see my thread).
Its not even 2w old... and no other one reporting faulty mics.

So I decided to recover Vista, and guess what.
"Both" mics works... So some winupdate or
    driver is causing my mic-of-dead-symtom.

Also when I called Sony in Eu bcz I bought a "Overseas service" in HK when I got the unit. They say that my unit is not registred under OS service. Meanwhile HK Sony claims that they have registred my unit. But apparently the Sony system cant communicate. Lucky me that I dont have to use any repair-service, not a HW-related...

Seems like the problems are coming one by one.[/QUOTE]
