    the boot order had been set that way, internal HDD. all the symptoms were with the HDD first in the boot order.

    I'm almost out of ideas :\ What about this new SSD ... was it at one time or another set as a boot partition? (Sometimes if it takes a long time to boot if there are 2 boot partitions - then we'll have to externally fdisk or quick-reformat the drive and then install it back into the system.) Also check the SATA/power ribbon connection is good, and the drive is seated correctly in the caddy. (?)

    the disk was never a boot partition. it is only 1 partition.

    but like I said it is a matter of the BIOS not recognizing the disk/ Caddy if I have rebooted the PC

    After re-installing the original DVD and rebooting, and then installing the disk/Caddy,and powering up, the BIOS sees the new disk and works just fine.

    after a reboot, I get a problem

    it is very repeatable, it behaves the same way every time.

    now I just tried using a different HDD in the caddy, a seagate momentus 750gb. it does not have this issue. each time i boot up the bios sees this disk. so perhaps there is something with the M4, maybe its firmware or other issue. I can see that the seagate is pretty low power by its specs, but the M4 is says 2 amps. I would bet this is a peak current not a continuous one.

    I will look into this next but I still say if the BIOS recognizes the SDD one time, it should after a reboot too

    you said in your earlier post that you have a similar arrangement. what ssd are you using the caddy, and is it working ok for you. I am probably going to send back the M4, and get something else. thanks

    ok, thats weird, I have the CT512M4SSD1 Not sure what the difference is between the 2. probably just a distribution difference.

    I don't know if there is some kind of interaction with the Intel RST driver and the SSD, where after it is detected, it sets a parameter and stores it on the drive to mark it in some way that the next time through there is an issue.

    I am running 9.6.0.1014. I think that is the current approved version, although I know there have been more recent ones

    CT512M4SSD1 = 7 mm thick
    CT512M4SSD2 = 9.5 mm thick
    Theoretically they're the same board inside.
    i'm using the Intel RST 11.2.0.1006 from the Intel website; am not sure if it makes a difference(?)
    (My firmware is ver. 000F)
