Microsoft has released another pile (19 in all) of Vista patches dated 23 october 2007.
KB941649 covers a multitude of sins:

I suppose this is a good thing for Vista's stability. 19 patches is a lot though.
How many megabytes are they all together? -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
Quite a few of the patches are 64-bit and some seem to be for special situations. Look for yourself.
John -
Is it possible that these patches, inparticular:
"It shortens the startup time of Windows Vista by using a better timing structure."
Could conflict with things like tunexp? -
Thanks for the info.
-
all the patches being posted here, are those available through MS update or ?

I checked my Update history, and it showed at least some of them (thats all I checked for, if some showed up), so they should be automatic.

Regarding specifically tunexp, no it won't conflict at all. The TuneXP "ultra boot" tweak does not do anything except call Vista's own built in defrag routines. Yes, yes, I know it makes all sorts of claims about what it does but the truth is it does NOTHING else except trick Vista (or XP) into thinking that the system is idle, so the OS will trigger the sleeping process that calculates the optimum order of the boot files, and then call the defrag routines so that they use that optimized order. The claim about moving files to the edge of the hard drive is BULL... If you need more info, search through the "sticky" thread about tweaks. I posted a message there with full details of how I dissected what TuneXP is REALLY doing.

It's weird because I went to update my T60 and in fact there were like a total of 20 new updates. One update was for Windows Defender and the other 19 were all language packs which I just deactivated. Are you guys sure 19 important updates were released today in addition to the language packs?
-
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
I think these were released as a hotfix not as part of an update cycle. (Yet!)
Gary -
Tried to update this on my service packed vista. Said I already had them. I guess it's good Microsoft is releasing this slowly.
-
If you use this url from microsoft, it will search all vista related patches. This is if the patches do not show up in windows update.

Looks like KB940105 is worth downloading for all gamers out there. -
MS release KB941649 again...new version
-
New version? What's new?
-
It's KB941649 V2 release
-
But what's new about it? Also thanks John.
-
Don't know about that ,coz i already have them since first week of this month & windows won't allow me to reinstall new one again
Earlier one is 5.42 MB
New one= 5.31 MB -
Well it must have been an un-needed update or something, thanks for the info.
-
So this will be available via Auto Updates? Si?
-
I didn't find any of the 19 updates when I checked with windows update. Where do you guys get these updates?
-
you have to download and install them manually from the microsoft website. Some, if not all, will be available via windows update in a few weeks time.
Personally I'm fine with Vista with no major issues so I'll just wait for windows updates. -
I had the previous one installed as well but windows didn't give me any trouble and allowed me to install the new one over it. Of course once I did that the older version was removed by windows.
-
same situation with me too..confused

It's because there are not part of the "windows update service" yet. They are only availabe as hotfixes right now. Hence they will NOT show up in the Windows Update application.
Gary -
Hot fixes eventually become apart of the windows update cycle right? I may just download these if they don't. I know others have said they do but i'm not sure.
-
i've read that it takes 2-3 weeks for it to show up
-
Oh well, at least i get the fixes. I am really too lazy for my own good to download them myself.
-
i simply don't trust it until it comes out to windows update
-
Well it is on the Microsoft website so i can see how you don't trust it...those gosh darned virus makers. No kidding, Microsoft does make viruses...windows.
-
I don't trust it because what they do is release it to the public that way..and then its sort of in the beta stage..they let users download it..and get feedback..and once it is free and clear of problems..that is when they release it via windows update
-
Oh, i never knew that's what it was. I thought it was the finished form of updates but they just didn't feel like releasing it to windows update. =\
-
I downloaded and installed the update. But ironically the start up time is much longer than before. A blank screen appears forever before the vista logo. Well done microsoft!
-
Now that you mention it, i want to get rid of that darned logo. It bugs me when the system is already loaded but i have to sit through a 10 second logo&sound when i just want to hop onto my comp quickly.
-
this is exactly what im talking about....beta updates...by monitoring your pc from those who signed up for that service....they can get ure info and tweak the update before they release it via update
-

Installed two updates. No change whatsoever.
-
eyecon82: you might want to backup your statements with some real evidence here
you might THINK that's how they work, but spreading around FUD like this, isn't helping anyone -
this is a common known fact..try googling msft services and hotfixes prior to windows update release
msft always wants to get feedback before making things available to end users who don't proactively download and instal hotfixes
i'm afraid this does help people -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
BULL! They do not monitor to see who downloads hotfixes. They do release them as hotfixes first wait a bit for any OFFERED feedback and then make them part of the update cycle. If you think they are monitoring the downloads you need to be looking out your window for the black helicopters!
Gary -
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
Yes they do want the feedback but it is not a common know fact that they "by monitoring your pc from those who signed up for that service....they can get ure info and tweak the update before they release it via update" which is what you said in the first place.
Gary -
have you heard of "windows user feedback"? that is usually enabled unless you disable it
http://wfp.microsoft.com/?StudyID=100
BULL back to you!
-
go read about the windows feedback service...then come back and write here and refute my statement. They release updates early so they can get feed back from those signed up with the service (sometimes it is enabled automatically without the user even knowing) and when everything finally looks good..they release it to windows update...please do some research without making blind statements refuting others info

Yes I sure have. Sorry, it was not clear from the message I responded to, that you were talking about that. The discussion was about the hotfixes and the way you worded it I thought you were talking about monitoring the HOTFIX downloads not the separate feedback service. Mea culpa.
Gary -
it's ok...maybe i should have been more clear. the reason for the user feedback program on vista are for these purposes
-
ScuderiaConchiglia NBR Vaio Team Curmudgeon
Absolutely right! They do use this to vet hotfixes prior to adding them to the regular windows update cycle. I wonder how many machine they actually have participating in that program.
Gary -
Well lets see, vista alone has sold about 88mil copies this year so i'm guessing about .5mil of that know how to turn it off.

It just became officially available through Windows Update. Just downloaded it a few minutes ago. -
Yep..just had 7 new important updates currently installing
for those of you guys that don't understand why I don't trust it...here's a quote from the website
"Known issue
Note This package has been updated to version 2. An issue was identified in which certain computers that have specific combinations of older AHCI USB chipsets and CD or DVD drives that use the SerialATA interconnection bus may not start after the installation of the original version of this package. Version 2 of this package has removed the fix that caused this problem. If you are using a computer that experienced this issue, you can restart the computer by using a bootable Windows Vista DVD and by selecting the Repair/System Recovery options. If your computer has already installed the original version of this update and has successfully restarted, you do not have to install version 2 of this update."
This just proves that they release initial versions and wait for feedback in order to release it via update -
Normally I don't install junk updtaes like windows mail updates, as I don't use that ever. Turning windows updates off and updating manually saves a lot of CPU hog immediately after start up.
-
How to check if Windows user feedback is turned off???
-
type in feedback in the search box..it should pull something up..ill let you know for sure when i get home and on my vista notebook...i have xp at work
