I have tried to steer clear of asking to many "dumb" new guy questions - but I have too ask this one.
How do I know what drivers I should have on my system MPC x3100? When should I update? I have the X700 256 meg video card and looking in properties, it says April 2005. Any insight on the matter would be great. Thanks -
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
Hi Chowderhead - your card is compatible. If your drivers are dated Apr. 2005, then they are approaching their one-year anniversary! You'll see a noticable boost by upgrading to the Catalyst Mobility 6.2.
Don't worry about asking questions. If you have one, ask!

Thanks for the reply, I do appreciate that. I did d/l the file from the above link - but I have yet to launch it. Since I have not done this before, is the process pretty simple? If I choose too run the program, will it just do what it needs to do or will I have to direct the file path, etc... ? Thanks again.
-
It's about as easy an install as you can find
If you have the little ATI icon in your system tray, you can right click on that and go to Display Settings > Options to see your current Catalyst version.
-
2. After that, I suggest starting Windows in safe mode and running Driver Cleaner. In Driver Cleaner choose ATI and ATI CCC and let it remov any old files that stayed on your system. Reboot
3. Install the new ATI Catalys drivers. Just klick OK and Continue whenever asked. Reboot and enjoy.
Although you can skip point 2, it's recommandable.

Thanks for the step by step - I do have another question though. When I go to "add/remove" I have the following listed:
1. ATI Display Driver
2. ATI Control Panel
3. ATI Software Uninstall Utility.
I am assuming it is the first one that I need to "remove" but I just want to make sure. I do not see one that list "catalyst" Thanks. -
What happens if you just install the new drivers on top of the old ones?
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
That's fine.
Sometimes, it can cause issues, but I've never had any.
You can get a cleaner install by uninstalling the old ones first, then install the new ones after you reboot.
Cheers -
CHOWDERHEAD SLC Notebook Consultant
So which one would I uninstall? Is it #1 (ATI Display Driver)? -
CHOWDERHEAD SLC:
Run the ATI software utility to uninstall the other two. And then uninstall the ATI software utility.
If you just install the new drivers on top of the old ones, it could come to complications. Old files can clash with the new ones, and left behind registry entries can really mess things up.
Normaly, there shouldn't be problems, but safety first. You don't want to mess your Windows up so far, you have to make a full Windows reinstall.
[EDIT] Well The ChazMan explained it perfectly

Hi guys,
Just one info. On this other forum one user used to have problems with installing the Catalysts for Ati 200m, and he finally found the way. Friend of mine slap-o did this nice article:
http://www.thegamebooks.com/installing-the-latest-catalyst-drivers-on-a-xpress-200m-gpu-t131.html
It may apply for other troublesome installations.

Hey guys,
how about the Catalyst 6.2 with Control panel instead of CCC?

Nah, will wait for Omega (also with Control Panel), been a happy Omega + Ati Tray Tools user for years...
Nevertheless thanks for the info my southern friend

How are the Omega drivers different from the stock ATI drivers?
-
CHOWDERHEAD SLC Notebook Consultant
OK - so i tried to do this by removing the ATI files from my system, rebooted and than launched the 6.2. (Did not do anyting) in fact, it was not seeing my video card at all. I than used my recovery disk, got the system back to where iit was prior to my attempt and than tried to overwrite the files. After the over write this is what I have:
Driver Date: 4/5/2005
Driver Version :6.14.10.6525
I realize that this is "user error" but I am just not sure how to proceed. Any help on how to do this correctly would be great. I just dont know which step I am doing wrong. Thank you. -

Never mind - I got it worked out. Thank you for your patience and help
-
6.2's eh? Hrmmm...I've been busy with school and been sick for a while, so I'm kinda surprised there's a new release already.
thanks for the update as usual ikovac~!
I'll try them out and report back.
Cheers,
Mike -
Yeah Mike, and guess what you can get them in the Control Panel flavor too (23 megs). Not officially of course! Check some of my above posts.
Cheers, -
But why the ATI 200m owner even bother downloading these mobility drivers? The Catalyst 6.2 and 6.2 IGP drivers both support Xpress 200 series ??? Maybe I'm getting something wrong...
-
I guess 6.2 IGP are the better solution then?
Cheers, -
-
Ok, I'm confused. Why are the drivers NOT also for the Mobility X1400?
-
-
Charles P. Jefferies Lead Moderator Super Moderator
The Mobility Catalyst 6.2 work for the ATI Mobility Radeon X1400.
-
ChazMan,
How about the X1600 - when I tried using the installer I got a "video not found" or some such. When I tried directly installing the driver, XP gave me heartbreaks saying not to do it. Is there a trick to this?
Also, do you know what the driver version is for 6.2 just in case I accidentally did manage to get it installed?
Thanks,
- Ed -
x1600? mobility? If so go download dhmodtool3 from driverheavent.net that will solve your problems.
I installed and tested and tested and tested and WOW great set of drivers~! Small increases everywhere~! I'm happy
Oh and a little off topic sidenote, I installed some new drivers for my desktop Nvidia 6800 and holy crap I got my desktop beyond the 11000 mark in 3dmark03~!!!!!! FINALLY~!!!!!
*cough*
Okay
Cheers,
Mike -
I go to install the driver after running dhmodtool3 but the X1600 does not show up among the device drives. Do I use one of the others?
- Ed -
I'll try again, but I downloaded the Mobility 6.2 drivers and they wouldn't install on my Acer 5671 (with X1400). Maybe I downloaded the wrong file or something... but I know the X1400 was missing from the list of supported cards and I couldn't figure out why that would be.
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27
see.. no Mobility X1??? cards listed. -
Okay guys here it is. Even though your videocard is supported your system may not be identified because of the motherboard and bios, etc, because Ati is lazy or your laptop manufacturer is lazy and they haven't added support for your system.
Use the DHmodtool3 and follow the instructions, that is all.
You don't have to select from a list of device drivers, it should auto detect and ask to install for your device. If you have to pick from a list and yours isn't there, then your videocard isn't supported yet, but I doubt that your x1600 isn't supported so you are doing something wrong.
You have to download the Radeon Catalyst 6.2 drivers not the mobility ones.
JB510, trust me just get the normal ones and use dhmodtool3 to install them. It doesn't do anything to harm your system, it just modifies the .ini file so that your card is identified. Basically the author of dhmodtool3 did the work that the lazy people at Ati should've done, instead of making a set of drivers for desktop cards and mobility cards.
Totally safe, trust me, if something goes wrong it was the users fault, I'll bet $5 bucks on this.
I'm a poor student $5 bucks is all I can offer.
Cheers,
Mike -
Shampoo,
Sorry, but I've done the whole drill with both the regular and the mobility drivers, dhmodtool3.exe and dhmodtool31.exe in all permutations several times. The Catalyst installer craps out after using dhmodtool3* with video card not found. Attempting to replace the driver via the device manager using the modified .inf file in each case presents a list of ATI cards which do not include the X1600. My only question is whether there's a corresponding card in the list for the X1600.
Better, if someone has done this successfully with the X1600, I'd sure like a detailed report of how it was done.
You can keep the $5, though I appreciate the offer.
- Ed -
Life is better. This one ( http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=602) converted the desktop driver INF file and presented the X1600 as one of the cards to install when updating via the device manager. Worked fine.
Thanks all for the help
- Ed -
I tried the Mobility 6.2 drivers and the regular 6.2 drivers after running dhmodtool3.
Both result in a INF Error when trying to install on an Acer 5671 w/ X1400.
I ran the ATI Compatibility tester thingy:
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27
it it to indicates the 6.2 drivers are not compatible.
Anyone successfully gotten the 6.2 stuff installed on an X1400? It's noticeably absent from the ATI web site.
I -
Maybe you should try Omega drivers.
OmegaDrivers -
Some dumb questions. I installed this and want to make sure it is not overclocking my card. What is the difference between this and stock ATI drivers or "Omega" drivers? Thanks. By the way I have an x700 card
-
I can't say the difference but I'm sure, that Omega drivers don't overclock any card by default.
-
- taken from the OMEGA FAQ
What are The Omega drivers?
The purpose of the Omega Drivers is to provide gamers with an alternate set of drivers, ones that have more options and features than the original sets. The drivers contain optimizations, extra features (like OC capabilities), more resolutions and internal tweaks that can give users the edge in a gaming environment over the normal drivers, which are often tailored for synthetic benchmarks. All Omega driver sets are tested (unless noted) by myself in my own PC or in an alternate PC (in the case of the NVIDIA drivers) to ensure maximum compatibility and reliability. -
JB510,
I got it updated on the X1600 using the desktop drivers and the program at http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=602
First install the drivers. You'll get the INF error.
Then run the program above. Be sure to select the INF file for your OS since there are two: one for Win2K and one for XP.
At this point, go to the device manager, right click on the display device and select update driver. Tell the wizard that you'll install from a known location, and that you have a disk. Select down through C:\ATI\SUPPORT\6-2_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_30152\Driver and select the inf file for your OS (starts with C2 or CX for Win2k and XP respectively).
Select your card from the list that's given - it should be there.
Reboot and go.
- Ed -
Ok, I tried this, but NONE of the X1?? cards show up in the driver. Did X1600 show up when you manually selected the INF file?
-
Thanks for the info guys, so none of these drivers overclock by default?
-
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
No, they don't overclock unless you tell them too.
-
I think I may have screwed this up myself at some point along the way.
- Ed -
I got the asus Z70va and for once I tried to install the new catalyst but I have some problems...
When I install them, everything works fine until i have to restart and get back in windows. When I get in windows, I get this blue screen with some text on it ( I believe some people calls it BSOD) but it goes so fast I cant read anything then it just restart. Then the routine continues until I restore the system...
Anyone encounter this before? -
Yes it is the Blue screen of death indeed, and by default it automatically resets the comp (you can change this and see what is causing the problem).
Anyway, drivers weren't installed well and cause teh BSOD. Since many people are having problems with this 6.2, can I ask if your computer worked well with 5.13 drivers. Those are among the best drivers ever released, and very fast. Just curious.
Cheers, -
Ok I installed what was posted in the initial post by ikovac. Now, when I start the computer, I get this message once I get to the desktop...
http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cli7ro.jpg
I also get that message when right-clicking the desktop and selecting "ATi Catalyst Control Center."
Should I roll back the drivers and then uninstall the old ones, THEN install the new ones? I installed these ON TOP of my old ones. Thank you! -

Cheers,
