Hi drunkmunky,
That is strange. It seems that some notebooks work only with the drivers supplied by the manufacturer. I really don't see the reason why. I have read in some other thread that some MSI notebooks cannot use ATI drivers too. That is a shame. If you find any info on that please post.
Cheers,

I bet there is a driver conflict with some old drivers.
1. Get yourself "Driver Cleaner Pro" and install it.
2. Uninstall ATI graphic drivers. Restart computer.
3. Start Windows in safe mode.
4. Run Driver Cleaner and select: ATI, ATI CCC and ATI WDM and clean it. Restart computer.
5. Install new ATI drivers and it should work.

Thanks a lot -
Still no luck with an X1400. I took a look at both the Mobility and non-mobility driver inf file. The Mobility INF file is lacking in nearly every x1?? card. The non-mobility INF file has all the cards, except the X1400.
So I don't know, oversight that they left it out? Unfortuantly I don't see an easy way to contact ATI technical support to ask directly. -

i tried the ati drivers that bypass check, no luck, so i got omega 6.2s and my 3dmark score went up 150 wooo

Are these two huge CLI.exe processes normal to ATI's Catalyst 6.2 drivers?

Hi Aerozolic,
Yes that is CCC. They are around 5-15 on idle and and around 65 when started. And also CCC takes around 60 MB on the disk. For nothing if you ask me.Because there are better tools (ATT) that take 10 times less ram and do 10 times more things (not literally of course). Ati programmers are quite ..... (add anything you like here) obviously.
I used to have it because of the powerplay settings, and then underclocked my ATi x700 down to 60/81 and realized that powerplay does nothing in comparison to the benefits of the extreme underclocking. Now CCC lives no more on my comp.

What do you personally suggest ikovac?
-
I, in place of iKovac hehehe, would suggest Ati Control Panel, not CCC, it's the basic, classic interface that has everything without all the hassles and slowdowns of a stupid GUI interface that just jumbles things up.
iKovac has a link in this thread somewhere around page 4, that explains how to get Ati Control Panel back from the grave.
Cheers,

Thanks Mike! Yes the unofficial CP Ati mobility 6.2 shold be there somewhere.
I'd personally prefer Control panel, or clean ati driver. Now they are forcing us to download 30+ MB driver with a bigger chunk that is garbage in my humble opinion. Why there is no simple Ati mobility driver (10MB) and who wants CCC - download it separately.
So currently I would recommend:
1. For people who don't want/know/can/dare to get anything more or simply are not interested in advanced features:
Ati mobility driver 6.2 (or 5.13) with CCC. (default install)
It would cover most of their needs. I completely understand this group and will be glad to help them see that the things are a bit different than Ati imagined they should be.
2. For people who are weekend warriors (in a positive way
) and know/want/dare to get some more from their cards (up to 20% speed) and battery (up to 20% time):
Ati mobility driver 6.2 (or 5.13) with or without CCC, but with Notebook Hardware Control. One click underclocking and overclocking from 100/100 to 400/400 on x700 for example. Undervolting CPU is an option here.
3. For people who are interested in 30% better performance with 10 degrees cooler notebook in games that lasts 30% longer on a battery in Windows:
Ati mobility 6.2 without CCC, no powerplay, but with NHC (for undervolting CPU, simple over/underclocking ATI) and Ati tray tools for obligatory latencies, extreme overclocking, OSD info, gameprofiles, automatic overclocking, artifacts testing etc..... )
I think most of the people would easily get the 2. suggestion and find their best setting. -
Jon,
After installing the desktop 6.2 drivers (with failure), run the following: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=602
When you run it, make sure you modify the right inf file: c2 for win2k, cx for XP.
Then go into the device manager, right-click on the display adapter and select "update drive". Tell the wizard you want to install from a specific location, and that you have a disk. Go into the \ATI\Support directory and navigate until you find the inf file you modified. Select it. The X series cards will appear among the list of supported card. Select the relevant one and go.

As a reminder, here is my original post...
Ok I installed what was posted in the initial post by ikovac. Now, when I start the computer, I get this message once I get to the desktop...
http://img117.imageshack.us/my.php?image=cli7ro.jpg
I also get that message when right-clicking the desktop and selecting "ATi Catalyst Control Center."
Should I roll back the drivers and then uninstall the old ones, THEN install the new ones? I installed these ON TOP of my old ones. Thank you! -
Hi Cygnus,
Microsoft .Net framework can be found in Add/remove if it is installed. It is the program layer that is needed by new applications. CCC uses some parts of it, and needs it to run. The FW can be found on microsoft site. It is not small though.
Control panel was the old style settings panel built in Ati drivers. I just wanted to check if you have some old drivers. Although some prefer it, it was exchanged with CCC in the newer Ati drivers. It is a kind of oldish tabbed dialog box that could be accessed through display properties. Catalyst Control Center has replaced CP. It has the same funcionality, but it is more colourful, slower, memory demanding, and doesn't offer to much.
So if you want CCC you need to install .Net framework first. If you install CCC without the framework, you get similar error message. If you don't then just forget about framework and install driver only (during installation press Custom, and uncheck Catalyst control center). If you still get the message, try Vidko's procedure, it should work.
Ati drivers should be upgradeable. In fact every installation will uninstall the previous and install the current. Sometimes it will not be full or something (especially with custom drivers) so you need to clean the system first and then install the new drivers.
Hope it clears the things up a bit, -
Ok I just installed the .NET FW 2.0 and it seems to have cleared everything up. No more error message and I can now run the CCC! Thanks!
Slowly getting the hang of XP...but I still feel paranoid after always using Macs. -
You'll get a grip fast... Glad that it worked.
Cheers, and happy gaming... -
im one of those thats tried every method in this post and havent gotten 6.3 to work, anyone think they can help? Also how long before the radeon's are normally released?
-
Radeon Catalyst Drivers are normally released about every month or so.
I didn't get 6.3s to work either because of some bug in CCC making Powerplay keep the mode in high performance, so i reverted back to 6.2.
No real difference discerned between the two so I say stick with 6.2 if you're having problems with 6.3, but if you're not having problems of course go with the newer drivers as they have fixed a few things with its release.
Oh yeah 6.3 encoder works with the 6.2s so don't worry about that.
Cheers,
Mike
