The firewall in Kaspersky Internet Security is wonderful. It's low on resources and does a fantastic job. Actually that whole package is worth every penny. :)

I, too, also go with Comodo. To me, it acts like ZoneAlarm, but without being a hassle to configure. Especially without the pop up messages asking for permissions. That used to annoy the crap outta me with ZoneAlarm.

I've used two other firewalls; RealSecure and Proventia, both of which were provided by my college. I can't say much about RealSecure, I only used it for a day. Proventia, on the other hand, was downright horrible. It blocked my internet connections and trying to configure it was a pain.

Eventually my school's IT help desk told me that I was better off just using Windows firewall :(

    voted other!
Other for me is either Jetico(free) or Outpost (paid)

The rest of the firewalls sem to be way too bulky for me, most notably Symantec. Tiny is quite HUGE and buggy, Sygate is just OK.

Is Jetico actually shareware rather than freeware?

Just wondering. I have ZL Pro on my desktop. It's good, but the pop-ups annoy me. I'm planning on trying Comodo or Jetico on the laptop I buy sometime this month as I can't be bothered paying no more

Jetico is DEFINITELY freeware with the lowest memory footprint (according to this thread), and also has one of the highest leak-test ratings. The small memory footprints means that it is extremely effective, though it is a bit difficult to configure - you have to get used to the idea behind. I haven't tried the new Comodo, but I don't really like the eye-candy interface of it. On the contrary, others may choose it exactly because of this and the easier (?) configuration.

On my desktop, I used Windows Firewall for two years and I never ran into any problems whatsoever. I did use F-Secure Internet Security (Panda Software) but it caused conflicts with some programs so when it's license key ran out, I reverted back to using Windows Firewall + AVG, and it's all good. I plan to use Windows Firewall again for my new laptop.

Oh, ok :) I asked as whilst researching, on a random forum I found (can't remember link), a couple of forumites insinuated after a month you have to pay and/or the Jetico makers plan to make it shareware this month for the next update

I've been using the latest Pro version of ZoneAlarm and i like it. Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall is another one of the best software firewalls available that i don't see listed in this poll. This is the third thread with a poll in the software forum that i've seen so far that has totally missed one of the main products for the poll lol. No Kerio in this firewall poll, no Opera in the web browser poll, and no NOD32 in the anti-virus poll.

i tried using jetico, but it proved to be too complicated and was a hassle, so i went back to my zone alarm pro which does hog resources to a degree, but its ease of use is a big plus for me

i don't think router firewall is adequate, it will only hide ur ip and such, but it wont protect u once the hacker does get into the system. its nice when u've got an added layer of protection.

I was using comodo, for application filtering, and outbound protection.. but it wasn't worth the amount of popus/time investment/hassle IMO. I figured my internet habits are safe enough to just go with the windows xp sp2 firewall.

On my notebook, ZoneAlarm ISS. On my desktop, Comodo. Both are a lil' annoying, but... Maybe I'll try BitDefender sometime. Thing is - if you want the BitDefender firewall, you have to buy it with BitDefender AV. And I prefere to use NOD32/KAV.

Comodo on both desktop and laptop. Tried Jetico, but seemed unduly complicated and eventually locked my access to router. Had a rare all time trying to sort it so dumped it. Been using Comodo for a few months and works well though does nag a little at times.

I use McAfee which came free on my Inspiron 6400 (day 3 of a 30 day trial) and my routers firewall. Windows Vista firewall is off because I read it's not good to have two software firewalls on at the same time.

I have a question. I installed Limewire but it wouldn't communicate with the internet due to a firewall. Is it a good idea to port-forward my router to enable Limewire to work? I have my router port-forwarded for Xbox Live, but that's a closed service and is extremely safe. I'm worried about creating pinholes for Limewire to come and go as it pleases though.....

    I voted for Sygate.
I used to use ZoneAlarm, but Sygate works better, it's easier to configure and use, and it's easier on my system.
I didn't realize how much of a resource hog ZA was until I ditched it.

Ive tried all those up there except Sygate, including some not listed (Steg, Kaspersky, etc.)
And in my opinion Zone Alarm is the best, while the firewall im currently using (Pc-Cillin) is very close behind.
I just like the TrendMicro interface over the ZA.

I voted for Windows' firewall for one reason and one reason only. My laptop is in my sig, and it came with a 30 day McAfee trial, which expired last week. In those 30 days, I struggled to get P2P programs working correctly, LimeWire in particular. It kept saying that a firewall was detected, and was blocking its attempted communications. Well, last night, I uninstalled McAfee, and turned on Windows firewall. LimeWire now works fine. I haven't port-forwarded my routers firewall either. I merely granted LimeWire access through Windows. So on that note, Windows gets my vote, and McAfee gets a big fat zero! ZoneAlarm gets a fail too for not being compatable with Vista.

I've been using the whatever-days trial of Norton Internet Security 2007. If memory is correct, PC Mag gave NIC its Editor's Choice. I doubt I will continue with it after the trial period, but I've been pleased. It doesn't seem to slow my computer and the firewall is non-invasive.

After the trial period, I will probably use the Comodo firewall, which is to be Vista-supported mid-April and is rated above most pay firewalls.

The Norton firewall does work quite well, but it probably is slowing down your computer. Though I've heard they improved that in the 2007 version (I only tried 2006), it's likely still a resource hog.

You need to try the 2007. It is much more efficient. I used to use Norton but switched for various reasons. I've been pleasantly surprised with the 2007.

This poll should be revised because there are many new firewalls that are not mentioned on the selection for the 'best' firewall; namely Comodo Firewall Pro, Netveda, Sunbelt Kerio, Jetico, Outpost, as well as others.

I was actually a big fan of zne alarm pro security suite, but then i came upon comodo firewal pro, and now my boot time had significantly improved from where you enter your logon password, to when the little xp logon sound happens and to when its fully loaded. that was the only thing i have changed on my laptop, and sometimes zone alarm used to bog out once in a while.and with comodo i couldnt be happier.
