Wow, excellent post guys. One this I did not notice is a disk utility powertool. I used to have Norton Utilities, but that was too bloated and I did not install it again after the format. But it used to be able to run a disk checker/partitioner, registry cleaner and all the other ****, scheduled once a week. I've since been looking for something similar but with no success. Seeing as I am planning to buy a nokebook soon, I'd like to find something like that. My pririties are that it is reliable and lightweight (in terms of system resources use and speed). Does not necessarily have to be free. Any suggestions are welcome.

I love the themes available at http://interfacelift.com

I read about this software from a cnet forum. If anyone gets annoyed with "startup hijinx" you should definately try this out. It is a free (obviously) program that manages startup programs. The BEST PART is that not only can you decide where they are launched from (Registry, Startup folder, etc) you can also allow the program itself to launch them in a highly organized fashion.
I really enjoy how it prevents windows from getting in memory wars thus preventing some programs from launching at all.
Give it a shot...I like it so far...

I found a very useful utility. I do not take credit for creating it, but would like to mention what it can do. I use it to effectively elimintate all non-essential processes. This is very useful for clearing up virtually all system usage before running an intensive application. It alows for smoother running of any intensive application. This is not like anything that tries to do the same thing. It is on the next level, very effective.
Just run with the parameters '-all' to kill all processes. It is overly-cautious with a display prompt before and after each elimination. After running with the parameters, I just hold down enter and let 'er go to town! It does have the ability to shut down an individual process, using a different set of parameters (double-click exe for details), but what is the fun of that? Please note, file is micro-small (32kb). It will download in a blink of an eye. I can't seem to find it available for download, so here she is:
http://home.satx.rr.com/nhuth/KillWind.exe (Right-click, 'save as')
LICENSE INFORMATION: I don't own the rights of distribution on this one, so pass it around as you deem fit.
Example of 'crudentials': "C:\Folder\Folder\KillWind.exe" -all
To set parameters, either use the 'Run' command, or set the crudentials into the 'Target' field in the properties of a shortcut to the program. Please note, you can not set the crudentials to the original program itself. -
I get a curious message from my antivirus scanner when I click that link. It says that there are two files that arrive in my tmp folder when I click, and that both are Proc-T viruses.
All databases are up to date, and I want to make sure others know. Check it out maybe? -
Ok, upon further review, the antivirus was just detecting a program that kills processes. Then it was thinking...hmmm...MALICIOUS!
But, obviously that isn't the intent with this program. I could see why it might think that way though.

I have posted this in another thread but it is really cool themes and they are free, check it out..

Really cool application I have been using for a while.

Really good stuff, especially if you are a firefox and gaim user. You can install firefox (usually around 20 MB) So now you have something to do with that old 128 MB usb drive since you picked up a 1 or 2 GB and don't use it anymore.
I use this all the time, I can get on ANY computer and have my bookmarks my passwords and the style I am used to!!
Also leaves no traces when you leave!!!!
Really need to check this out if you use multiple computers at home or work!! -
I got a whole bunch of free programs for you. I haven't used them all but I believe they should all be good. Most of these only work on Intel systems.
1) Notebook Hardware control: It is a great program and I use it all the time.
2) AIDA32: Nice program to see what is "really" on your laptop. I use it quite a bit. You can learn alot with this one.
3) ccleaner: Lovely program! Get rid of all that junk on your laptop. I use this one every week.
4) WinDirStat: Nice program. Use this to check how much space everything is taking. Looks daunting to use but is pretty simple. Try it you will like it.
5) Dead Pixel Tester: Everylaptop owner needs to test this one out. Find all those dead pixels. Found one on my laptop.
6) PowerStrip: I haven't been able to test thing program yet. It pretty much lets you change anything with your screen.
7) O&O Defrag: Click on the little Icon on the left to download the pro version. You don't need to pay. This program is great for a free defrager. I have used this one a few times.
8) Fast Defrag: Defrags your ram. Not sure if it is necessary. Nice none the less.
9) Memtest86: This free program tests your ram. Looks useful. I have not used it yet. This program runs in DOS.
10) ThrottleWatch: Tells you alot more about your running programs then Windows Task Manager. I have not tried this software yet.
11) CPU-Z: Another program that gives info on your processor. I have not tried this one either.
12) CPU RightMark: Another CPU program. I have not tried this one either.
Enjoy all the new free programs.

AcCrypt is a great program!
Better then lockfolder and steganos, its small, and uses hardly any resource and it's free.
I use MS OFffice to password protect my excel and word files , now this will protect everything else from snoopers on the network. -
Does anyone here know of a good free audio editor? I need one so I can edit and add sound to my Flash animations.
Thanks...
EDIT: I found one called EXPStudio on download.com. I'm still learning how to use it but if someone still knows a better one, please tell me! Thanks again... -
You can get the last freeware version of Fair Use Wizard here: http://www.aplusfreeware.com/categories/LFWV/FairUseWizard.html
It's version 1.0 but supposedly the changes since then have been minimal; I'm new to both versions so I don't know.
It does give you the full version though including the option for larger final file sizes. -
Great thread!

I'll throw in a new twist. Most of what I've seen here is utility stuff. Some I've downloaded and it's very useful. How about you hikers and cyclists out there who use a GPS? If you haven't already, try EasyGPS at http://www.easygps.com/download.asp. It a great little program for storing your favorite routes and waypoints. It's recent upgrade will connect to most new handheld units.

I'm using the free version of SyncBack to synchronize my files and folders from my notebook to my server. It's an awesome and feature packed tool and free!

Music, I know I may not be the authority in this matter, but I feel your post belongs either in one of the pre-existing topics or in its own thread. I don't think this free software thread is the right place. Sorry.
Anyway, for those who like Konfabulator (Yahoo Widget Engine) or Samurize, you might want to try the program Avedesk.
Avedesk does the same sorts of things, as well as others.
http://www.avedesk.org/
Also for the flip3d effect in windows try: "Top Desk"...but it's only trial-ware.
"Glass3d" is a free program that allows you to make any window/taskbar/sidebar transparent, and to adjust the transparency with hotkeys. It's pretty fun and not super resource intensive.....also FREE. -
Just found a great site for free stuff. Very thorough: http://www.ramsinks.com/software.asp

Not sure if its been mentioned yet but this is a great program for bringing your windows XP up to date with all the available security patches etc...

Alot of stuff I use was already mentioned, one thing not yet mentioned though is...
UltraVNC
It's a remote desktop program with nifty compression/file transfer features. It will run with a browser if you're in a pinch and can't install the viewer. I use this from my laptop on trips to get files, do misc things on the desktop at home. Nice alternative to a KVM switch too. -
Did anyone mention google earth? its an awesome free download
-
yeah, i think someone got that early on. might have been a diff thread though. here's two that completely ROCK and I don't believe they've been posted yet...
www.crystalxp.net - FREE xp themes, bricopacks with complete icon sets, and more, they tell you how to install it all in the forum... I love the VistaXP theme.

This is a great utility:
XP Syspad
It organizes various administrative tools in an easy to use program - access to hundreds of system tools.
It doesn't install anything to the registry and is easy to remove, I highly recommend giving it a try if you like digging through Windows to access some of the more advanced functions.

There's a bunch of free software at http://www.cdlibre.org/. Many of the programs listed in this thread can be found there. They even have them compiled into cds and dvds downloadable through bittorrent, in case you want to grab them all. As far as i know, all software there is open source and/or free. You can also find old free versions of some programs that are commercial now (but weren't before).
Although most of them are in English, the site is in Spanish. So good for the Spanish speaking community (if any) around here.
I've already downloaded some of them and they had no virus/spyware. I cannot assure that'll be the case with every program listed there, though. Just be cautious.
Cheers. -
I was trying to search for an alternative OS to XP, and knew of Lindows (not called that anymore). Is there any other OS that is similiar but free and compatible for everything Windows runs?
-
There are a TON of Linux distros. You'll have to search around. Many are very user friendly, easy to install, and similar to Windows. Why are you looking for a free alternative to XP? New machine?
Sorry, that might be for another thread.
Look at Ubuntu, people seem to like that one. -
RE: Netscape 8.1
1) Did Netscape stop bundling e-mail software with their Browser? !!
2) And did they stop the 'Composer' Feature ?! I loved that Composer feature blended in with the Browser to write HTML files. It was all right there, Edit page, save .... done.
Am I missing these 2 features on the new Netscape? -
Great thread!
In addition to what has been posted, here are a few others I've used successfully:
RegScrubXP
Registry cleaner.
ISO Recorder
Burn CD and DVD images and create ISO images. Shell extension, so right click menu option.
NetMeter
Great little bandwidth monitoring program for Windows.
PeerGuardian 2
PeerGuardian 2 is Phoenix Labs’ premier IP blocker for Windows. PeerGuardian 2 integrates support for multiple lists, list editing, automatic updates, and blocking all of IPv4 (TCP, UDP, ICMP, etc).
RegSeeker (added 10 Jul 2006)
Great registry management tool. It offers quick access to startup entries, uninstall information, colour schemes, History items (URLs, recent documents etc) and IE Favourites. There is also a selection of tweaks.
ExtractNow (added 10 Jul 2006)
Extracts ZIP, RAR, ACE, and JAR file formats. -
Has anyone mentioned Blender?
It's a free, small download size, and amazing 3d engine/ model creation/ rendering tool/ animation creator/game creation program thing. You'll have to try it to believe it, or at least look at some of the screen shots. It's got a steep learning curve... worse than the GIMP, but not impossible. As in you won't be able to do anything whatsoever useful for the first few minutes/hours/days, but once you get going, it's exhilarating to use, and it's really hard to stop. It's just amazing! I'm not that great at using Blender, but it's a very powerful program.

tried a search, and nothing came up. Are there any free non-command line programs for partitioning a hard drive?
-
there's partitionmagic, and there's also one that's included in a linux installation...sorry for the lack of information, but i actually prefer the good ol' DOS program fdisk, or the windows setup partitioner

Got the following from lifehacker.com.

If you're used to *nix systems and want to try to be a g33k in Windows, you can run programs from the Run menu like you would launch an app through the terminal. All you have to do is create a shotcut for your program and place the shortcut in C:\WINDOWS\
I've done this to reduce the number of icons on my desktop. Here are some shortcuts I used:
ps - Photoshop
dw - Dreamweaver
fz - FileZilla (because "ftp" is pre-built into Windows)
putty - PuTTY
torrent - BitComet (my torrent application of preference)
dcpp - DC++ (a direct connect p2p client)
vs - Visual Studio
wa - Winamp
im - Trillian
So, now my Desktop has very little clutter. Example to launch Photoshop: WINDOWS KEY + R, ps, [Enter]
...Keeps things simple and easy
If you have lots of programs with these shortcuts, consider making a list of them and using a program like StickIt to list them on your desktop
n addition to my previous comment about the Run menu launching. If you want an easy way to get your shortcuts to the C:\WINDOWS\ directory:
Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\SendTo\
Right-click, make a shortcut in this folder to C:\WINDOWS\
Now, when you right click a program, go to Send To > WINDOWS
This is an easy way to get shortcuts into the WINDOWS directory. Now, to rename them easily, go to C:\WINDOWS\
Right-click, Arrange icons by > Type
Now find one of the shortcuts and the rest will be above and/or below it because they're arranged by the same type. Now just rename each one to short names that you can remember.
