On the notebook hardware control program, the original cpu speed when plugged in was set at dynamic switching, it was running at around 780mhz, i turned it to max performance and it said about 1800mhz (in red letters), is it safe to turn it to max performance just while its plugged in? If so, what should i set it for while using battery. Thanks

This is not the place to ask this question (go to HP/compaq forum).
Running the CPU at max speed will increase its temperature. You must be extremely picky if you can notice the delay with the dynamic mode, which is recommended.

DiGit_S Regarding ......... "Nvu: WYSIWYG HTML editor "

    1) is it integrated with FireFox?

    2) the nvu.com web site lists a version that is over a year old, V1.0. Is there a later version to download?

    Thanks

    uTorrent
I was a strong supporter of Bittornado for a long time, but uTorrent has seriously impressed me as a .torrent client. It'll organize and store all .torrent files (So I was able to get rid of my Torrent folder that held just .torrent files), it allows for you to set the priority of files within a torrent and the bandwidth priority of individual torrents. It has a speed wizard to help you chose the best max download/upload/connections to maximize speeds, and allows you to limit upload/download on the fly to free up bandwidth. With all the features of uTorrent, it's amazing how little CPU it uses.

I'm, of course, running uTorrent right now and it's managing 4 .torrents and it's mem usage is only 7,768 K! :D

No one seems to have mentioned a free partitioning software.

    GParted: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/

It is an ISO of a free partitioning software. Partitions Linux partitions and looks like Partition Magic.

    Abiword: http://www.abisource.com/

Reads and writes word docs and other formats. Better than Wordpad and smaller than Open Office and Microsoft Word and it is free.

And I can't even believe no one has mentioned this piece of very usefull software.

    nLite: http://www.nliteos.com/

If you have a full Windows XP CD or Windows 2000, make an unattended installation CD easily. Great for constant reinstalls, customizes the installation for your needs according to how you want it and if you want you can even create scripts to install software automatically for you, makes the installation of Windows XP plus the drivers compressed into popping in the CD and hitting the "any key".

Thanks for the link to nLite! That looks like exactly what I've been looking for! I've been wanting to create an un-attended Windows XP install, but I've not had the will to do so (always looked like it would take to much effort :p).

Does GParted work for all partitions (NTFS, FAT, FAT32)? I'm interested in partition software like that but for Windows environments.

    Thanks!

I'll try not to name anything already mentionned.
GB-PVR Media center. (Turn your comp into a TV)

DM2 Minimize windows to try, to floating icon, semi-transparency, etc.

CacheMan Tweak various cache/ram settings. Very useful on old computers without much ram.

FrostWire Free, open-source alternative to limewire (no ads).

A-Patch (for MSN Messenger) Make MSN messenger (or windows live messenger) compact, remove ads, unneeded uglyness, bloatedness.

AutoHotkey Macro-making tool with simple scripting language.

    REAPER Awesome multi-track audio recorder/editor.
Edit: as of version 1.0, it is no longer freeware, but shareware. However you can still download version 0.999 from the site. And if you're not worried about the legality of things, the never versions are still free to try, full-featured, and don't expire.

    Gdow Gmail notifier.

    FileZilla FTP client.

ALZip Best archive utility EVER. (superior to all, winrar, 7zip, tugzip... all of em)

Core Force Firewall/system lockdown (file+registry protection). I havn't tried this yet, but if you have frequent virus/malware problems, this looks super-secure.

Belarc Advisor Gives info about your computer, lists CD-keys from installed software.

Eusing Free Registry Cleaner Another reg cleaner.

OmegaDrivers Alternative Ati/Nvidia drivers (though the nvidia ones are very outdated I think).

    Soulseek Best music p2p app.

    Edit: Forgot a few.

IconLab For making icons/ cursors. Supports alpha-channels, importing .png.

RemoveWGA To get rid of the M$ WGA notification, for those of you unfortunate enough to have installed it.

    ALSee
Image viewer. Can also batch resize, and convert. All the ALTools are very nice software actually, though most of them have better alternatives, I've found ALZip and ALSee to be the best in their fields.

Also, not exactly software, but another alternative to M$ Windows update, WindizUpdate.

Props to whoever suggested Autohotkey. What a great program!! It only uses about 3mb of memory and you can do soooooo much. I don't even open the start menu any more except to shut down/restart/standby.

All of my most used programs are at the touch of two keys and I continue to add more as the situation presents.

Good call, when I find you, you get a reputation!

MiKTeX and a TeX editor such as WinShell is essential for any university student. (Or anyone else who regularly need to write reports or other nice-looking documents with lots of text)
Writing professional-looking documents is so much easier than with Word/OpenOffice. Especially if you need to include mathematical formulas or other "complex" stuff.

That does look a lot easier to use than AutoHotkey, and more user-friendly. However, I bet it uses more RAM (not a huge concern, but still). I've grown so attached to this little script writer, I don't think I'll try the new one.

It looks pretty slick though, definately worth a shot for those who want an easy hotkey program.

Good list of programs so far! I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for programs to do the following:

    1) Encrypt/password protect a folder in Windows Explorer. (I tried using Axcrypt, but it encrypts every single file in the folder. I want to just encrypt/password the folder).

    2) Set a timer to shut down your computer. I don't want to leave my computer on all night, but sometimes I want to finish a download and have it automatically shut off.

    Thanks in advance!

Use a good download manager like 'Free Download Manager".
Then you can set it to shutdown the PC after the download finishes

Ok. I want to edit some mp3 files. Mostly just take some clips of them so I can make them in to ring tones for my phone. I tried audacity....but thats a bit over my head. I just want to open an mp3 file, clip it, and save it as an mp3 (or any other convertible file type). I could use the built in windows editor, but that's a lot of hassle to convert to .wav and back. not to mention its a bit sparse.

    Cheers.

    RVM Integrator

This program helps you make Windows XP instalation CD with all hotfixes after SP2 release. So you don't have to download them from Microsoft (and get something before yoy are able to patch all holes), but there are other advantages as well.

So just because we have more capable computers, it's okay to write bloated slow software?

Last time I tried iTunes it installed 2 services that ran even when the program wasn't working, and used 5x as much memory as Winamp when minimized and playing.

    No thanks.

    winroll
very handy. Rolls up your window by right-clicking titlebar. (should be built into windows in my opinion. None obtrusive. close to zero memory comsumption. You wouldn't even know if it was there, if you didn't know about it)

    RK Launcher
the best program ever. Runs really smoothly without bugs. Low memory consumption. Equivalent to Mac's dock. I posted the link to it's nightly build because I found that the previous release had some minor bugs that were fixed in the nighty build.
