Hate Adobe Acrobat Reader? Want a program that doesn't take all that time loading up to display a file? Try Foxit Reader. Small, easy, with the same tools that Acrobat Reader has. You double click, it opens it. Can even can add comments to a file.

I have been testing Advanced Windows Care Personal from Iobit (freeware) for few month by now, and I found it very useful and reliable.

I would put in the same high rank must have software like CCleaner.

This is the best free software to take care about your Windows OS I know, which I would recommend to users of any qualification.

    ENJOY!

A general question about some freeware I recently downloaded.

    DVD Decrypter
    DVD Shrink

After downloading these and using them, I noticed that every time I eject or load a CD/DVD with my D: Drive, my Internet Explorer browser refreshes. Unfortunately, I don't recall whether this happened before the new programs or not. Is this standard operating procedure for Windows XP Internet Explorer, is this a symptom of malware (reporting over the internet every time I use my D: drive), or is this just a quirk with DVD Decrypter or Shrink? I would prefer explorer not to refresh every time the D: drive loads or ejects. I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

It doesn't sound normal to me dane1980. I'd go get Adaware and Spybot: Search and Destroy asap. Run 'em and see what they find.

I downloaded Notebook Hardware Control , but it says I need to log in as administrator and start NHC. Then go to settings and enable NHC service.
Question is how do I log in as adminstrator?

There are a few big ones that do not work on Vista (including ZoneAlarm, Comodo, and a few others) but many work just fine. I've yet to really install any paid software on my machine other than Vista itself (and a few games) and all of the OSFW works fantastically!

Anybody want to recommend any good CD/DVD burning software? Particularly ones that will handle .iso files (since Windows built-in burning doesn't seem to)

    ^ DeepBurner works great.
CDBurnerXP Pro sounds good too, though I haven't tried it.

Both handle standard burning stuff as well as .iso.

    NTRegOpt

Compresses your registry. Doesn't alter entries, so *should be safe*. I was a sceptic but paranoid about a lean and mean system so downloaded it. On the first run, there was only an 11% reduction. Amazingly start-up time decreased by 10 seconds (not sure that is the intended aim of it lol). I do not know why, I do not know if it'll be the same for you. Doesn't hurt to try I suppose

P.S. Got it from a guide, said guide linked in a member's sig. Will give proper due's when I remember who it was

If anyone is interested in a post-it type program, check out:

    www.stickiy-notes.net

Tons of options... tap title, note rolls up, choose font type, color, background color, make note transparent, on and on!

Great program for keeping simple notes on your computer, and it's FREE!

    Enjoy

I've got to throw my CD/DVD utility bundle into the mix. IMO, these are the best tools for the job, and get it done right every time:

Alcohol 52% - Can make images of CD-Roms and non-encrypted DVDs. I like it best for the virtual drive emulation. Can do everything of Alcohol 120%, but without the burning capability.
    http://www.free-downloads.net/programs/Alcohol_52__Free_Edition

ProtectionID - Non-install executable to scan and determine the various application protections of CDs or DVDs. Use to find out what settings to put Alcohol 52% at for creating an image.
    http://pid.gamecopyworld.com/ProtectionID.html

ImgBurn - Use this utility to pick up where Alcohol 52% leaves off. Lightweight software to burn disk images. Also use in conjunction with the DVD suite below for the final steps to stamp a perfect DVD copy.
    http://www.imgburn.com/

CDex - Mentioned before, this little utility has access to internet databases to automatically apply mp3 tags. Also allows customized file names while ripping.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/

RipIt4Me* - Best utility to rip DVD movies. This program is a shell that uses the other programs below to accurately and correctly rip DVDs. It has a "one-click" setting or a wizard mode for step-by-step user input. Best of the bunch, in my opinion.
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=RipIt4Me

DVD Decrypter - The one and only DVD decrypting utility. Others I have used have been bloated. This one does it right, and none do it better. Must use in conjunction with RipIt4Me above for current DVDs though, as it's non-development means it can no longer function as a standalone.
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Decrypter

FixVTS - Utility to clean up the VTS files post-decryption. Used by RipIt4Me. Not always necessary on every DVD (but absolutely necessary on some), and a nice thing to do to clean up your DVD video files and prepare them for image making/burning.
    http://download.videohelp.com/FixVTS/

DVD Shrink - Nice final utility to compress decrypted video files so that they will fit on a single 4.5 Gb DVD. With this you won't have to go out and buy the expensive dual layer blank DVDs to make 1x1 copies of your DVD movies. I've shrunk a few DVDs and I've got to tell ya, I can't see any video quality decrease due to the compression. Upon compression, this utility makes a new DVD iso that you can burn using ImgBurn above.
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=DVD_Shrink

VOBMerge - VOBMerge is a tool for merging several '.VOB' files into one big VOB. This is useful for seamless playback and/or editing of DVD video on your harddrive. Don't use it to join several DVDS, just use it to join a vobset from same DVD. Because I just rather use DVD Shrink and view from an iso through Alcohol 52% virtual drive or burn to a disk, I've not used this utility very much. But it does do what it says.
    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=VOB+merge&Submit=Search

    * Just want to make it perfectly clear that RipIt4Me actually uses the DVD Decrypter, FixVTS and DVD Shrink programs, so they all need to be downloaded and installed. RipIt4Me even checks for updates on the latter programs upon startup. Just fire up RipIt4Me and it will start and close the other programs as it uses them. It's too easy.

no i mean like..a stand alone webcame program that will allow me take pictures via the webcam and save them to my hd, wihtout the need to have to use an instant messenger program like Windows Live.

hopefuly one that has included effects like the photobooth program on apple computers is what i'm asking for.

Don't know if it has been mentioned before or not:

a great multimedia player called GOM Player. It's main advantages:

    1. Freeware (no adware/spyware)
    2. light
    3. robust
    4. internal codecs!!!!! (no hustle with divx, AC3, xvid, mpg4...)
    5. Skin support

I was using BS player and Media player classic before, but GOM player replaced both of them.

    Regards, VidKo

CD/DVD/HD-DVD/Blu-ray burner. Also contains some program that can grab DVD movie files from DVD Disc (as such is illegal in some country). Now you don't have to pay for a Cd burner software (although WinXP has built-in burner, but this software can burn ISO, etc.)

    Also available in Linux.

Question: Is anyone out there using both the RMClock Utility and the "Notebook Hardware Config" (NHG) tools together?

If so does the CPU control on NHG intefere with the RMClock Utility?

Should I use NHG over the RMClock Utility, or visa-versa?

    Thanks :)

Are you sure you don't mean Notebook Hardware Control (NHC)? I have used NHC more than RMClock and I like the interface more on NHC. Try them both out and see what you like.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have Vista premium which lacks windows fax and scan. I can scan photos thru the Windows Photo Gallery, but it is a very inefficient tool. The new HP photsmart essential also lacks scanning (I think...if it has a scanning option I can't find it). So what (free) software are you guys using with your HP laptops to scan photos? The old HP disks aren't compatible with Vista. Thanks.

    DVD Flick http://www.dvdflick.net/

DVD Flick aims to be a simple but at the same time powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks as well as subtitles of your choice.

    and it uses ImgBurn
