Does anybody know of a free traffic monitor that can monitor a router's traffic for all devices connected to it?

    My situation

I know I can get software monitors for each PC/notebook that I want to monitor but for a very long time I've been interested to know how much bandwidth Xbox Live uses but have never found a way to do it.

    I've got a Linksys WRT54GS-UK v5.1 router with Linksys firmware v1.50.5.

Is there a way to find out this information without resorting to a third party firmware, like a software solution (free?)?

    Thank you in advance. :)

Does anyone know of any software that runs more effectively and efficiently than ebay's turbolister. I have a lot of issues with it crashing, changing settings, and just acting buggy. The program doesn't even need to have a bulk listings feature (though that would be great) just having access to professional looking templates that I can use and save each item individually and then copy and paste into ebay's description box.

I have to edit mp3 files all the time, and one of the best simple cut/fade editors I've ever used happens to be free: WavePad, by NCH SwiftSound. You can download it here: http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

It has a simple interface, supports tons of formats, and I haven't even begun to explore all the features yet. Plus the latest version works very well with Vista. The only downside is that it tries to install a bunch of other software that may not be useful to you, but you can say "no".

Since I just recently recommended it... If you're looking for a good, free image resizer, check out the VSO Image Resizer. It works on both XP and Vista and has a handful of other features including format conversion and compression.

Ataranea if you don't mind, make the post with all the stuff right here on page 32. It'll still be extremely useful and maybe someone will edit it into the front page.

I have a folder of software that I use to bring my/a computer up to speed whenever I re/install an OS. Each time I find another useful program, I add it to the folder - and if need be, remove a less efficient program serving the same function. Here's some of the free stuff:

    Zonealarm 6 - firewall
    HmmXP - theme
    Clearlook - theme
    Royale - theme
    Zune - theme
    Firefox 2 - browser
    Notepad 2 - text editor
    YzDock - dock
    Foxit reader - PDF reader
    Googletalk - chat
    Skype - chat
    Seamonkey - browser
    Tor - anonymity
    Clockgen - overclocking
    CPUid - processor info
    Super pi - benchmarking
    Daemon - virtual cd/dvd mounting
    Hdtune - HD info
    NHC - laptop power management
    nLite - XP slipstreamer
    vLite - Vista slipstreamer
    Virtualbox - Win/Linux emulation
    VistaBootPro - Vista Boot Manager
    Filezilla - FTP
    Netstumbler - wireless detector
    uTorrent - torrent client
    Audacity - multitrack recorder
    Kristal - multitrack recorder
    Foobar - ubiquitious music player
    iTunes - mp3 player
iConcertCal - plugin for concert detection
    irFanview - photo editor
    Picasaweb - photo organizer/editor
    Pwalk - photo viewer
    FFshow - ubiquitious codec pack
Media Player Classic - media player
    VLC - media player
    Vobsub - subtitle reader/editor
    RealAlternative - rm/ram codecs
    Glass2k - transparency on WinXP
Open Office - full office suite.

All right; that's most of my free stuff. For free OS's, look into Ubuntu and Xubuntu. Wubi allows you to install either in a double-boot system with XP or Vista, without the need to modify your partitions.

The answer is simply: MEDIA MONKEY
    http://www.download.com/MediaMonkey-Standard/3000-2141_4-10651290.html?tag=lst-0-2

Has all of iTunes features, doesnt use up as much CPU power and you can USE IT TO SYNC YOUR IPOD TOO!!! And this program tags your artwork to the music file, w/o hindering it in any way. It's the best media player I've seen by far. Can also network through it, although I haven't used it I bet it is easy to do.

This is a compilation of the past 32 pages or so in one big list. Categorys are alphabetical, though programs are listed in no particular order. Programs not yet listed are programs I haven't thought of a category for or don't know yet. Please keep in mind I do not know what most of this software is for. :p Any thoughts/tips/ideas welcome, of course. :)

Oh, there might be some double listings and wrongly categorized programs still. Last edit June 13th, up to post #327. (With the exception of Overclocker's post.)

    http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=RipIt4Me

DVD Decrypter – Rip, burn, decrypt DVD’s. The one and only DVD decrypting utility. Others I have used have been bloated. Must use in conjunction with RipIt4Me above for current DVDs though, as it's non-development means it can no longer function as a standalone.

DVD Flick – Simple, powerful DVD Authoring tool. It can take a number of video files stored on your computer and turn them into a DVD that will play back on your DVD player, Media Center or Home Cinema Set. You can add additional custom audio tracks as well as subtitles of your choice.

    http://www.free-downloads.net/progra...__Free_Edition

ImgBurn - Use this utility to pick up where Alcohol 52% leaves off. Lightweight software to burn disk images. Also use in conjunction with the DVD suite below for the final steps to stamp a perfect DVD copy.
    http://www.imgburn.com/
Daemon Tools - A handy free program that emulates an optical (CD/DVD) drive. It lets you mount .iso image fiiles so that you can create copies of your most-used discs and dump them on your HD. At which point to can run them direct from your HD at a much faster data rate. http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=ViewCategory&catid=5

Ditto on iTunes. I find a lot of apples stuff overhyped. but I recently switched from Winamp to iTunes. iTunes is way easier to get around on. Looks a lot less ugly and just plain works. The only time I'd characterize it as slow is when I put it on visualizations on my 945GMA (shared memory) notebook

It is late and I need to get back to studying, but I nominate
Audacity as a great freeware audio editing/mp3/wav converter.
need to D-load an encoder for mp3 (suggest LAME encoder).
    Sorry no links, tired.
Also, I advise anyone who values their computer to stay away from Limewire and other p2p networks.
    Hackers love to
A.use the p2p connection to compromise you computer.
    B. upload attractive content with trojans/backdoors, esp video and audio files that utilize media player because it can intitiate scripts/exe's/etc a whole lot of etc. I am hip enough to mess with p2p without losing my computer to some jerk in china. Most of my friends arent.

Thanks slowdive. I'll fix and add when I have more time. I've got a deadline for something else now, but I'll get to the list tomorrow. Wll send foobar to the aduio list. I've never used the program (or most of the others) so sometimes it's just a guess. ;)

Ok, done! That's it! Everything (I think, I hope) is listed in my huge post on the previous page, with the exception of Overclockers list because I didn't want to go and find URLs for everything (sorry). Now, I know near nothing about mainting my notebook. Which programs above are noob essentials? Already have AVG and Spyware Terminator. Thanks. :)

I can wholeheartedly recommend TCP Optimizer

It tunes and optimizes your internet connection. Free and easy to use. Just select your ISPs maximum advertised speed and go. Changes fully reversible. You can do more research in the forum there to find out about manual settings

Doubled my 6 Meg connection (I am on a 24 Meg advertised service, I'm now av 14 Meg, but that's a different story)

In addition to the list I gave earlier, here's the fastest desktop search I've found yet:

Find and Run Robot. Quick as lightning. Simple install. Search as you type.

It's basically Spotlight for Windows. Perhaps even better.

Now that a decent list has been compiled, some sort of ratings system needs to be implemented.

If you can't think of anything, use CNET/PC World/PC Mag reviews. It doesn't matter. What matters letting people need to know what is quality, user-tested, reliable software -- and what is not. A lot of people are too busy to do the research themselves.

Otherwise, this list is not all that different from Wikipedia's free software list. And it's probably a good idea for the continually updated list to be placed in the first post of this sticky.

I'm sure this has been suggested before but anyways NetStumbler is a great application to ensure you are not on the same wireless channel as your neighbor, to see how strong your wireless connection is, and to see how much interference you are getting on your wireless network. It has a graph and everything, very useful to configure your wireless network for maximum performance.

As an Anime fan and a computer geek I love the following

Microsoft Bootvis <- cuts shutdown time for xp users drasticaly
MPC <-media player classic / alternative to real player
Klite codec packs <- good with any media player allows you to open more music/ video formats verry nice
Gspot <- tells you infromation about your specfic AVI files and what codecs are needed
REALVLC <- remote control your pc , really nice tools for university students who have desktop pcs =) although XP and Vista both come with this option already
Kismac <-network decyption tool for mac also can use for passive and brooT force hacks
Google Earth <- there is an add on for Kismac that shows you all avaliable hotspots on the planet with BSIDS ;)

I see Cablenut as an option for maximizing connection settings. I seem to recall coming across a program at some point that claimed to maximize your bandwidth so that you got a little closer to the downstream and upstream maxes presented by your isp. Does anyone recall that program? If it was Cablenut, it doesn't appear to be Vista compatible. Suggestions?

So I read through all 35 pages and no one seems to have mentioned TweakXP/TweakVI ( www.totalidea.com) or SpySweeper. Is there anything wrong with these programs that I'm not aware of?

    http://sketchup.google.com/index.html

Also want to say thanks for the link, it's just what I'd been looking for to draw a model of my house, so I'm excited to play with it (unfortunately I probably have buy a laser measuring tool but... such is life)

" SSDream is a Vista application that allows screen savers, videos and images to be used as your wallpaper." Works for any version of Vista too!

The author will also like to add XP Support for users using Windows XP.
