My favourites:
Firefox. although lately Opera seems to be faster, I am still used to Firefox.
Thunderbird I love the self learning spam filter
AVGFree antivirus
Utorrent Switched from Azuereus and I am more satisfied with this, because it's way lighter on the system resources.
VLC Video player Needs no explanation
Notebook Hardware Control Undervolting, overclocking, CPU throttle, everything in here
Acronis Disk Director and True Image. (not free) Recently discovered this software and i love it. I prefer it over PQ Magic sofar.
1 Click DVD ripper (not free) Same quality output as AutoGK but in 1 program and much faster.
Izarc Love this little (un)zipper, free, fast and deals with everything.
Do you know any software better than the ones on this list? I am open to arguments. -

Whats the best video converting software out there for Vista which converts your videos to be played on an iPod Video? Besides Videora iPod Converter.
-
a couple free ones that I like are
NHC - I'm sure you all know this one
Yodm- Just got bought so the freeware download links are disappearing fast. it's a virtual desktop app that lets you quickly switch desktops without taking your hand off your mouse.
Here's a screenshot of Yodm on my notebook. I'm running Photoshop, Opera, and System control panel application, as well as various other apps (like topdesk and vistart) to get the best of Vista in XP. Of course this screen cap is during mid rotation...

I would recommend these programs:
Security Software:
- Spyware Terminator - free real-time anti-spyware/malware protection, auto-updates. (This is a pay feature in most anti-malware programs.)
Removes spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, home page hijackers and other malware threats.
- ThreatFire continually protects your PC against attacks by detecting malicious behavior, such as capturing your keystrokes or stealing your data, instead of only looking for known threats like normal antivirus software. By implementing sophisticated real-time behavioral analysis ThreatFire is able to stop never- before-seen "zero-day" threats solely by detecting their malicious activity.
More info here: http://www.threatfire.com/
From the Threatfire website:
ThreatFire's patent-pending ActiveDefense technology offers protection against all types of internet threats - both known and unknown — spyware, adware, keyloggers, viruses, worms, Trojans, rootkits, buffer overflows, and other malware. ThreatFire uses its unparalleled protection to hunt down and paralyze those threats that are either too new or too clever to be recognized by traditional "signature-based" antivirus software.
ThreatFire is advanced technology designed especially for people, not just experts.
ThreatFire uses advanced patent-pending technology to detect signs of malicious behavior commonly used by malware threats. ThreatFire is unlike traditional antivirus products that rely on old fashioned "signature" technology and require updating every time a new threat occurs.
By constantly monitoring the activity on your PC ThreatFire’s ActiveDefense technology is able to hunt down and paralyze threats that are too new or too clever to be recognized by traditional security software.
ThreatFire employs an intelligent behavioral engine to only alert you on truly malicious behavior, because sometimes even legitimate software may look malicious. This means you are only alerted when you really need to be.
P2P Software:
- FrostWire ( http://www.frostwire.com/ ) is an open-source peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing program. It uses the Gnutella network and is heavily based on the better-known LimeWire program. It is a fork of LimeWire with few modifications. It also recently included BitTorrent support.
From Wikipedia:
The project was started in September 2005 by members of the LimeWire open-source community, after LimeWire's distributor considered placing "blocking" code which it was developing in response to RIAA pressure and the threat of legal action in light of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd. When eventually activated, the code could block its users from sharing licensed files. FrostWire was first released in October 2005.
As with Limewire, FrostWire is written in Java, and so is capable of supporting multiple platforms. LimeWire is available in both free and paid versions, while FrostWire is released only as a free version. The FrostWire program includes all of the free LimeWire version's functionality, plus a few features of LimeWire Pro's fee based upgrade. FrostWire also provides a chatroom which is absent in LimeWire. FrostWire's interface is nearly identical to that of LimeWire's since it's based on the same code base, however, the color scheme is slightly different as is shown in the picture above. As in LimeWire, the FrostWire skin may also be changed to a variety of different colors.
Other software:
- CDex http://cdexos.sourceforge.net (CD ripper, converts CDs into MP3 or other audio formats) - what I like about CDex is that it is very easy to use, and you can use it with LAME, an open source, high quality, MP3 encoding engine.
A guide to using CDex - http://www.users.on.net/~alexanderino/cdex/
From the CDex website:
What's CDex?
CDex can extract the data directly (digital) from an Audio CD, which is generally called a CD Ripper or a CDDA utility. The resulting audio file can be a plain WAV file (useful for making compilation audio CDs) or the ripped audio data can be compressed using an audio encoder. Many encoders are supported, to name a few:
Lame MP3 encoder
Internal MP2 encoder
APE lossles audio format
Ogg Vorbis encoder
The Windows MP3 encoder (Fraunhofer MP3 encoder)
NTT VQF encoder
FAAC encoder
Windows WMA8 encoder
In addition, WAV files on the hard drive can be converted to a Compressed Audio File (and visa versa). CDex also supports many audio file tag formats like the ID3V1 and ID3V2 tags, which can be automatically inserted as part of the ripping process.
Feature List
Direct recording of multiple tracks
Read / store album information from/to the cdplayer.ini file
Read / store album information from/to a local and/or remote CD Database (CDDB)
Support CD-Text (if your CD-drive supports it)
Advanced jitter correction (based on the cd-paranoia ripping library)
Indicates track progress and jitter control
Normalization of audio signal
Supports many CD-Drive from many manufacters
Conversion of external WAV files
Support for M3U and PLS play list files
Best of all, it's free (GPL license, source code available)
Serveral languages are supported
- SequoiaView http://w3.win.tue.nl/nl/onderzoek/onderzoek_informatica/visualization/sequoiaview/ - shows which files in your hard disk take up the most space.
From the SequoiaView website:
Ever wondered why your hard disk is full? Or what directory is taking up most of the space? When using conventional disk browsing tools, such as Windows Explorer, these questions may be hard to answer. With SequoiaView however, they can be answered almost immediately. SequoiaView uses a visualization technique called cushion treemaps to provide you with a single picture of the entire contents of your hard drive. You can use it to locate those large files that you haven't accessed in one year, or to quickly locate the largest picture files on your drive.
