Nice site! Thanks!

I'm 50% in agreement, and 50% disagree with you, while it isn't strictly speaking, software, in the traditional sense, since it does fulfill the same application as software I feel it would belong.
Either way doesn't bother me, just thought it's more like software than a traditional "website" and does basically the IM work that you have listed as a section (I guess maybe a website based software page or something might be doable? Just not sure what actually exists, I think Google has some website based software, not sure what else). -
A web based software category would be impractical. What would i put there? This, google docs, some internet speed testers, and the ever useless online OS.
Then again, it would probably be ok to use it on any OS so it wouldn't belong in the windows forum.
If you want ,you can make your own list of best websites but you'll have to ask the mods/chaz/admins. -
LOL... I agree with Calvin. Keep this thread a Windows desktop software thread. There are just too many web apps out there to include them in this thread... a web app thread is a great idea though, although I'm not really sure which forum it should go in.

In Winamp the Winamp toolbar maybe useful.
-
I'm pretty sure i told you no to this already.
Errm, what exactly are you talking about? -
During the installation of Winamp 5.52 it's possible to add a winamp toolbar withcontrols to the web browser (Prev., Play, Pause, Next, Open/Eject?, Mute, Volume -,+ , and settings and others ...
-
Well? What about it? If they install winamp they can do it if they want, no need to list it.
-
Just to say it worth it
-
I think Ccleaner shouldnt be under misc utilities. It should be under completely amazing and useful something that you should get or you phail.
-
Please don't spam my thread.
-
Yes i am.
But in all seriousness, when i was slipping back a page or two, no one could see it. Now that i have it stickied i don't need to make "revival posts" so that newbs can see my list. Have a problem with that?
-
Exactly. 10 chars

I would say that it elevates to level or being a reason more than an excuse.
-
Hey, does Auslogics disk defrag just defrag files or does it optimize their placement on the harddrive as well? That doesn't seem to be addressed on their website.
-
I'm pretty sure it optimizes their placement.

I'd like to create a sound clip to use in place of the traditional Windows log-on sound. I have a couple of .MP3 files I want to create clips from - does anyone know of any (free) programs that can be used to 'trim' audio files down? I don't want the whole file to play when I log on. Thanks!
-
I'm not 100% sure, but Audacity may be what you're looking for. It may take some time to find the feature you're looking for though, it has a steep learning curve.
-
I have used both Audacity and Wavepad and I find Wavepad more feature rich and easier to use. Similarly, I prefer CDEx over EAC although opinions will differ.
While we're at it, I don't think these have been mentioned:
Tclockex is a very nice taskbar clock utility, although it doesn't look quite as good with WinXP as it did with 2000 and I don't think it runs on Vista.
Notebook Batteryinfo adds a larger, more readable battery meter to the taskbar and has some advanced features. Also WinXP only.
Also, someone said " Google Earth is used for what?" If you don't know, you should find out, it is awesome even if it's mostly just for entertainment. -
One of the criteria for adding to the list is that it's Vista 32-bit compatible.
-
Not necessarily a criteria but it would be better if it was, otherwise i'll have to put a notification message next to it.
-
Well in that case, TuneXP works well (XP ONLY). I used it on my old XP desktop with great benefits and no problems. It's a good tweaking program.
-
I've already checked it out. And in any case, it's a tweak, and would be on flamenko's list if it was safe. He used to have it up there but now it's gone because of problems or something.
-
The problem was that it is for XP only, however many people were using it in Vista thinking it was safe for Vista, only to have problems afterwards. It has since been replaced by a batch file by ScuderiaConchiglia that defrags the boot files. There is nothing wrong with TuneXP in XP, however it should NOT be used in Vista at all.
-
Then flamenko's thread has the problem solved. I don't want to steal any thunder.
-
You won't be. flamenko's guide is Top Vista tweaks, and this program is for XP. It's a free program that works well that many have had success with and therefore I'm recommending it for the "Free Software" list.
-
I'll think about it, thanks for the suggestion.
-
No problem.

Thanks for the link to wavepad, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Thanks for your suggestion Calvin as well - I have not tried Audacity but I will should the need/want arise.

No problem Chaz.

Its a program that scrubs the free space on your computer to insure that whatever you have deleted is officially gone. It is what the DoD uses (or one of the programs they use). Probably not much of a use here unless you want to scrub a computer or memory stick or something before letting someone use it or selling it.

Nice! Thanx!
-
Eraser scrubs free space also, and to governmental standards and beyond.
No space, free or otherwise can be scrubbed from a "thumb" drive, due to drive life enhancing technology called "wear leveling" used in all of them. -
if no one have mentioned it ... then i think the list is missing FFDShow under codecs bro and it works in Vista
-
Yes, i find eraser better. I've never heard of this program so it seems really shady. Eraser is a well known program.
All of the codec packs i've listed installs it so no need for it. -

Can across this just today.. -
Windows Sidebar Styler
Use Windows Sidebar Styler to tweak the Windows Vista Sidebar!
Windows Sidebar Styler is a FREE program designed by Stanimir Stoyanov, a developer from Bulgaria, who is a developer and an administrator at AeroExpereince a community for Windows enthusiasts. You can download Windows Sidebar Styler from his Web site: Stanimir Stoyanovs Blog. At the time of this writing, the most recent version of Windows Sidebar Styler is 2.0.6 and it was released in August of 2007. Keep in mind that there are separate versions for 32-bit and 64-bit Windows Vista. You must also have the most current rendition of .NET Framework 2.0 installed.
Once you download the installation program, which comes packaged as a MSI file, installing Windows Sidebar Styler is a snap. You just follow the steps presented by the setup wizard and respond with the appropriate action in the User Account Control dialog box.

I'm going to have to say no to both your recommendations. Windows sidebar styler doesn't do anything as far as i know from my testing, and bandwidth vista 2 doesn't seem to do more than log your connection.

Greetings,
I've just recently started using KMplayer, an awesome alternative to Windows Media Player, etc. Since I've downloaded KMplayer, I haven't had the error msg that tells me that I'm missing a codec. Here's the description from their website...
If you wanna read a full detail on the feature list, you can click here
You can download it here
Hope you enjoy it! =) -
That KMplayer thing looks pretty shady...i'll think about it.
-
Thanks, i'll add it. *Took it off. Not freeware.
-
*I dunno what to say.
-
I didn't tell you about mouse switcher, I told you about KMPlayer
. I believe it was Stan who recommended the mouse switcher
-
Sorry then.
-
I don't think it's a shady app, Calvin.
-
Have you ever used it? What do you think about it?
-
Can we include Keybreeze? I really like it.
-
Haven't used it, Calvin, but was just trying to show that it's been recommended by a reliable source.
