There's an intent difference. Promotional software is like shareware, or nagware/adware. We're talking free software. Sites that advertise with free serial numbers for the day or something similar are just that... advertising. Which is not the intent of this thread.
-
-
I have no problem with that but everyone tried to say it was illegal and make me look bad , and then on top of that you say stick with the topic , well the topic should be changed to NO PROMOTIONAL software , I had no problem you removing it but they should Not say it was illegal before hearing me out like they did ,
-
We never said that the software itself was illegal.
Providing licenses for paid software, if not part of a promotion, is illegal.
And the topic is pretty damn clear.
We appreciate you trying to contribute, but the software you're suggesting doesn't fit here. -
justbrake,
I will add the mention of 'NO PROMOTIONAL software' to the first post since I do not want to make the thread title longer.
I am positive that no one meant to say that your a "bad guy" just your suggestion was a poor choice.
I suggest that everyone continues to get back on topic and that we end this "mess" here before I have to delete more posts.
Thx
Kdawgca -
excuse me, someone mentioned it was wazr software before you and the mods deleted it , you covered your tracks so I can't prove it ,but it dosn't matter just close the case Thank You

WinMerge
It's a great little file comparison utility. I don't have Vista, but people have used it with Vista without problems.
It's a real life saver when you need to know how and where files may differ.
WinMerge is an Open Source project, that is covered under the GNU General Public License.

Which subtitle would be for a ripping software? Is there even one? If not can some one PM me a good one please! Also, what does Mozilla Thunderbird do?
-
Subtitle ripping? Also, Mozilla Thunderbird is an e-mail client, if you didn't already see the section it was under. Search wikipedia.

ISO Recorder
Welcome to the ISO Recorder download page. ISO Recorder is a tool (power toy) for Windows XP, 2003 and now Windows Vista, that allows (depending on the Windows version) to burn CD and DVD images (DVD support is only available on Windows Vista), copy disks, make images of the existing data CDs and DVDs and create ISO images from a content of a disk folder.
ISO Recorder has been conceived during Windows XP beta program, when Microsoft for the first time started distributing new OS builds as ISO images. Even though the new OS had CD-burning support (by Roxio), it did not have an ability to record an image. ISO Recorder has filled this need and has been one of the popular Windows downloads ever since.
With an advent of Windows XP SP2 and Windows 2003 the version 2 of ISO Recorder has been released, which introduced some new features including ISO image creation and support for non-admin user.
Finally, in Windows Vista it became possible to address another long-standing request and provide DVD burning capability.
Since the very beginning ISO Recorder has been a free tool (for personal use). It is recommended by MSDN download site along with Easy CD and Nero and is used by a number of companies around the world.

@Calvin this is a Very good burner copy and iso app.. -
Thanks for the suggestion, i'll look into it.
-
Thanks for the suggestion pixelot, i'll consider it.

A handy little utility I have been using for a couple of years is a unit conversion program called "Convert"
http://joshmadison.com/software/convert/ -
You can do that with Google without cluttering up your system, does it have any advantages over the converter provided by google?
-
I have never tried the google but Convert is a single stand alone exe file that requires no installation. Try it -
Alright, i'll be sure to check it out.
-
I just use Google for unit conversion:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=1+cm+in+inches&btnG=Search
And it can even do a few things that a desktop app can't:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=1+usd+in+eur&btnG=Search
...unfortunately, it does require an internet connection though.
EDIT: Sorry Calvin... I (somehow) didn't notice you already mentioned Google's conversion. -
Dont discount the little convert program. It is very simple to use and has conversions for the following
Distance
Energy
Flow
Force
Light
Mass
Power
Pressure
Acceleration
Angle
Area
Computer
Concentration
Custom
Density
Speed
Temperature
Time
Torque
Volume
Volume-Dry
Heck, it's used by Nasa and on the international space station... -
It does has the advantage of doesn't require internet connection though...
-
Even if it doesn't merit a spot in the thread, I'll make note of that. That could come in handy! Thanks.
-
Thanks, this is a great little program.
-
I've added 3 new programs to the list, check it out for those of you who wanted "Convert" up there.
-
What? No WinMerge?
-
Hey, i get feedback from other people, and myself who test it out. Whatever doesn't go on the list goes down in the pages if anyone wants to peruse them.
-
Does anyone know of freeware comparable to Network Magic software for setting up and managing a network?
-
Does anyone out there have a tip on what free software I could use to try and replace Dreamweaver with?
-
I would check the text/html editing section. I personally like Kompozer.
-
Suggestion from me: PocketDivxEncoder:
"PocketDivXEncoder allows you to encode any video clip with optimized parameters for handled devices (landscape mode, 240x320, low CPU usage, increased brightness, ...). The video output standards are directly playable on PMP devices (Archos,...) but also on your PocketPC, Smartphone or Palm thanks to the player The Core Pocket Media Player. The clips are created thanks to the fast encoder mencoder."
http://www.pocketdivxencoder.net/
Vista users have to use the latest beta build, but it is very stable.
Basically it's a .avi encoder for portable media devices. It supports inputs from all files WMP can play and I find it's options much easier to use than SUPER. -
I'll add that tomorrow, along with some minor changes to the list like, adding more site links instead of direct downloads, and i might include an index.
-
I like the improvements on the guide Calvin. Great job.
I wonder who helped?
-
I like the newly-formatted headings
-
Looks really good Calvin, keep up the good work, and I hope you're feeling better pal.
-
Thanks for the great comments guys, i really appreciate it.
-
Good Job Calvin, keep up the good work

I recomend Virtual Box- What it is is a program like Virtual PC, but much better. In my personal experience they are tied so I recommend a link to both which is easily found on that website I linked to.
-
All right, and which section do you suppose i add them to?
-
I think "Productivity" would be the best fit.
-
But what section. That's a category, the ones that specify the programs are the sections.
-
Virtualization software?
-
Alright, i'll add it later. I'm installing software on a notebook right now.
-
Also, Inkscapes link just leads to Wikipedia.
-
It's apart of the improvements. I linked to wiki on some of them to provide more information to the user before he/she downloads it.
-
Ahhhhh, I see.
-
Fantastic guide.
I would also suggest IZArc for compression tools.

Hmm, was wondering why iTunes isn't listed here yet? Is it that bad that it doesn't deserve to be listed under the "best" free software? Or is it just because it's by Apple, even though it's Windows-compatible? lol
-
iTunes was suggested a while ago in a previous post, and this is why it's not in the list..
-
i dont believe nobody mentioned gom player , much better than vlc player by far
info here
http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_Introduction.html -
Me Too, its pretty good.
The only problem is with iTunes you have free access to the iTunes store.
You can not purchase tracks like that with the other players mentioned. -
I'll add it.
I did a lot of testing with that, and the audio quality i got from it was lower than with foobar2000, and the others i have there. Ironically, it sounded the same as WMP.
GOM Player doesn't play nice with codec packs, and on top of that, when i used it, it made my video quality drop. On that same note, I'm doing a lot of testing of Zoomplayer and i find MPC to provide sharper videos, especially with subs so it may have to be removed. -
Great job cleaning up the old list.
Maybe someone can help me out and suggest an easy and efficient program to get my notebook running the way it used to? I bought a new Dell with XP in May 07 and my boot times have gone from under 30s to just over a minute. (Even after going through msconfig) It's taking apps longer to get running now as well and so I'd like to do some spring cleaning without have to wipe and reinstall everything. What do I want? A registry cleaner? Can I goof that up or is it straightforward?
