Hello everyone,
I wanted to vent on Apple for a bit. I have owned Apple for about 2 years now. I first had a MacBook 13 inch and then a MacBook Pro 15 inch. My wife also owns a Macbook 13 inch.
I recently bought an HP DV7t. Why? I am tired of Apple & Mac OS X because:
Price - You have got to be freaking kidding me. My HP that is coming in a couple days has the specs below shown in my signature. It cost me $974.99 after a great coupon & free shipping! This system blows away even the MBP 17 inch that is sold now. The new MBP 17 inch is sold standard for $2,499.00! That system doesn't even come close to the specs I will have on my new HP. Let us compare:
dv7t quad edition
• Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
• Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-720QM Processor (1.6GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333MHz FSB)
• FREE Upgrade to 4GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm) from 3GB DDR3 System Memory (2 Dimm)
• FREE Upgrade to 320GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive with HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection
• 1GB Nvidia GeForce GT 230M
• 17.3" diagonal HD+ High-Definition HP LED BrightView Widescreen Display (1600 x 900)
• LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-RW with Double Layer Support
• Webcam Only
• Intel Wireless-N Mini-card with Bluetooth
• 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
• No Modem
Compared to:
Macbook Pro 17 inch
# 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X2GB
# 500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm (hmmm...only 5400 rpm?)
# SuperDrive 8x (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
# MacBook Pro 17-inch Hi-Resolution Glossy Widescreen Display
# NVIDIA GeForce 9400M + 9600M GT with 512MB
and NO HDMI...WHAT THE HECK?
Even upgrading memory & hard drives is more expensive. I researched the prices on newegg.com and WOW.
Stability lies - So I spent the 40 something bucks on Snow Leopard. For what? Now my system starts freezing up when I use a variety of programs. And yes, I am fully updated. Even Safari gives me crap and Apple owns that program. Oh yeah the commercials promised me that it would "just work"!
Apple cult mentality - I don't have to explain this. Everything that is brand new seems like a MUST HAVE in the Mac world.
Windows trashing - Tired of this marketing crap. Most of it is misleading. Like how Apple was stating that MAC OS X didn't get viruses. Hmmmm....then why do they suggest antivirus software just to be sure. Suggesting that it NEVER crashes...LOL! Did I mention that when my battery completely dies...I have to plug it into the power brick for about 10 minutes for the system to come back on...don't know why...it doesn't matter if the battery is in or out. SUCKS!!!

Apple doesn't use propriety hardware for the most part. You can use off the shelf ram, HD, you name it. But I do agree with the rest of your comment. I owned an iMac for about a year.. Never really had a problem with the computer, but I was glad I got rid of it. No need to ever try it again as far as I'm concerned.
Welcome back. -
-
ya they just like the CHEAP standard hardware, then toss in a non standard TPM chip on the motherboard.
come on the 9400m is now in NETBOOKS, not frigging $1000+ laptops, its all advertising and how you package the product
Fugly and Functional sure beats Pretty, Polished and Pointless -
Price is what drives me away from Apple. I can't consciously pay that much money for a laptop and expect a 1 year warranty.
-
yep specially when some like ASUS even give you a year of accidental damage. Cant even pay Apple for that
-
I agree with the posts above.
Apple pricing, while getting better, is still outrageous. And the ad campaign, don't even get me started on that. In short, what a load of crap!
P.S. 1700 posts!! -
For $2,400.00 I'd get a HP Elitebook 8750-w with standard 3 year onsite warranty . And about stability , my XP-Pro comps have crashed maybe once in 6 years .
The 9400m gpu in macbook is a joke ! My Asus nj-10 netbook has that card ! -
The problem with Apple is:
1.) Pricing
2.) Being tied into limited hardware options
With Windows you have so many different hardware manufactures and configurations to choose from. The odds are good that I'll find a machine suitable for my requirements at a price point that I can handle. With Apple you're kind of tied down.
I also purchased the dv7 by the way and it's a great machine. You're gonna love it! -
kind of tied down is an understatement...
-
awwwwwww but its such a PRETTY oversized netbook
-
Welcome back to the dark side oceanfirehawk. I dropped Apple products for the same reasons.
Oh and surfasb has the best Avy. -
You only get one Avatar. So might as well choose the best!

Nver liked apple and nver gonna buy it.. Apple is just overpriced.. and looks good but the hard ware in it could buy me a way better laptop.

I came very close to buying a Mac on more than one occasion.
One thing that's always bugged me is the lack of dedicated Backspace, Home and End keys -- even though there's tons of space available for extra keys.
Of course an Apple fan will say "Oh, there's a keyboard shortcut for those keys." Shortcut? Really? Funny. -
Feast your eyes old man.

You guys make strong points, but my curiosity in the mac makes me want one.
I have no need for gaming except some oldschool rts and simulation games and macs got that covered.
Now the only thing that keeps me from buying the mac is the price, it is ridiculously expensive for dated hardware. -
-
lol does she dance like that too? Please share

I think a Mod should close this...the guys are going off topic just a little.

But before I go off topic, welcome back to windows my friend. You could not come back at a better time (Windows 7)Last edited by a moderator: May 6, 2015 -

Just Joking don't take it too seriously. -
Meh, Apple is a piece of junk. Lots of people whom I know are computer illiterate and when they bought a Mac they act like experts!!
and started say crap about Windows and PC
Macs are expensive but I have to admit they are better than a lot of other computers, however it's Apple as a company that I hate and keeps my away from buying their products. -

My dad's macbook has a broken LCD screen. How much to get it fixed? I can already buy a decent C2D laptop with that money, or two netbooks! And plugging in a Macbook with its LCD off (the screen is useless now)? It's not as easy as Windows, and it gave me headaches for a while when my dad told me to get it working.
I also frown at PCs that are Mac-wanabees. -
what rev of macbook, most times if its not under applcare or an older revision it isnt worth the money

I have been interested in Apple since the summer, in fact I was going to buy one, and still might. I want to learn about Apple because in the IT department where I work people who come with issues using a Mac are pretty much told it's too bad, better luck next time.
Over the summer I was looking into one, and checked out the Apple forums, I figured it would be fine there are plenty of knowledgeable people on the NBR forums. Anyway big mistake, which gets me to what turned me off Apple... The toxic community.
I watched people come in with issues with Apple products and flat out be called liars, because Apple has no issues. Strange we have a lot of Mac users coming to the IT department with problems. :/
Anyway that is the end of my rant, I still am interested in Apple, but I have been told by Mac using friends to stay from the community (Not just here at NBR forums), sorry to all those Apple forum members who aren't just extremists for Apple. It was just hard to get through all the Jihadist posts to find the nuggets of knowledge.
I am looking into the iMac mini the price is good, I would just need a keyboard and a magic mouse (cause they are awesome). I can hook it up to my HDTV. If any Mac users have suggestions or help they can offer PM me. The Jihadists can [CENSORED] especially the two whose sigs I altered and use. -
Anyway you got to understand some of them, they need self-justification for the amount of cash they spent on Macs. -
About the MAC vs PC, I have a thought of MAC is actually problematic as PC does. Due to the population of MAC is very little, so, the problems occurred seemed to be lesser than PC. Indirectly, this makes PC as the problematic OS compared to MAC OS. I did remember the silly AD by MAC(MAC vs PC). -
I never understand why people bash away at someone else's preference. Maybe that's just because I stand on the sidelines and watch the ridiculous pissing contest.
I love Windows 7. I am currently using SL on a MacBook Pro. I have no allegiance to other side; I simply go with what I care to use at the time. The HP Envy wasn't an option when I bought a notebook, otherwise I might be using that right now; show me a notebook that looks nice, has a quality feel, and has a few little design features I'm after, and I'm interested. For the sake of simplicity, I don't use Boot Camp to run w7 all the time.
The whole Apple "cult" thing was a con to me when I bought this notebook. -
Well as a user of both and been called a liar many a time in the apple forum .... the damn things have as many or more problems then your $399 walmart special !!!!
lets see here, how many of my u-MBP's hav'nt gone in for repair ...... NADA
is osx problematic ... try pushing it to the limits or working on something bigger than your average coffee shop network .... hardware dont get me started, the advertising dept has more input then any engineer or user does.
Newfiejudd and myself have resorted to drilling our baseplates to actually make them run COOLER .. okay it breaks the aesthetics but drops temps 10 to 20 degrees -
-
The problems of running Windows or Linux stems from Apple use of non standard ACPI. Until they start releasing ACPI that conforms to standards, issues will stay and using OS X will be the only way of getting the most out of macbooks or running other OS under OS X VM.

Much as I love to trash Apple products (and my friends who blindly buy them) I can see how they appeal to a certain "set and forget" segment of the population. When they work, they work extremely well and look good. When they don't work, due to hardware or software problems, then you have a BIG problem dealing with Apple -- a company that, frankly, is close to being deserving of a fat anti-trust investigation (and which these days make MS look like the model of open-source transparency).
Personally I've never had any stability issues with Windows, but I can understand why Windows has a tarnished reputation -- because MS give users too many choices and, consequently, many users unknowingly screw up their systems and security (turning off UAC, for example). As for viruses.... virus writers go where they get most bang, which is the 95% of the world that uses windows. If in 10 years Apple makes more than a small dent on the market I bet we'll start to see plenty of viruses targeting Macs, too (which will be funny because the Mac users I know tend to be the clueless, trusting types
Personally I couldn't conceive of buying a product with no removeable battery, that overheats, that has limited and overpriced hardware options, and that has a company like Apple "standing" behind it. Give me a machine with hardware and software that I can confugure as I want it any day of the week! -
And yes, blind loyalty in anything is foolish. I just like my MBP; I don't care about the Apple "ideal" and would just as soon be running Windows 7 happily. -
Okay, I exaggerate a bit, but after the Google app snafu there was a lot of talk about Apple heading down the anti-trust path. The more areas Apple gets into, the more its going to have to start accepting competition on its own turf. The latest Nokia patent dispute doesn't help Apple's case, either.
You're right tho... it's the blind loyalty that bugs me. Especially when I have had several friends who have had nothing but problems with their MBPs (overheating, dead batteries, dead HDDs) and *still* insist Apple is da bomb.
