So I finally installed some games on the np5793 today. i am wondering has anybody tried DX10 on xp?
on the hand some quick thought of mine:
1.) seeing the machine in person is so much different from pictures. (and i mean SO MUCH!) although the case is plastic made but its definitely a top notch plastic pieces. it looks better than m15x imo.
2.) the fan.....is impressively.....LOUD (I expected it to be loud, BUT NOT THAT LOUD) lol
3.) its keyboard require more forces than others for typing, not sure if that because its new or what. MBP and thinkpad has better keyboard at this point.
my fingers get tired quickly.
4.) the right side of palm rest get warm even just for web browsing.
5.) also the right/left click require too much forces as well.
6.) the sub is paperweight basically
7.) It scored 9200 with 174.93 btw

This is just an uneducated response, but I thought DX10 was only supported in Vista, thus the new MS games could only be played in Vista to take advantage of it.

that is correct to use dx10 you have to have windows vista OS

Dam, had no idea, so I guess all the people who wanted to play halo version x.x (I believe) switched to vista for no reason...well least a couple friends did.
-
how about DX9.0L? I heard its XP version of DX10
for example: http://windowsaddict.blogspot.com/2008/03/download-directx-10-for-windows-xp.html
edit: thanks Gophn, do you have a direct download, the rapidshare one seems dead. -
DX9.0L (or DX9.0Ex) is a Vista only version of DX9 which is used for Aero. There's no point in running anything in DX10 yet. For a framerate hit, you get almost unnoticeable visual gains.
-
are you serious Lithus? from the pictures i seen online they are huge different.
-
edit: nvm....
-
You can also download patches that allow you to unlock dx10 in xp home, but only for certain games. I've gotten dx10 to work for crysis, and the patch also allows me to play on dx10 servers. It's pretty sweet, although I don't know if it's illegal or not. I don't see how, but then again I also remember how touchy microsoft can be about their OS's and their version capabilities.

i just tried assassin's creed, all high under 1920x1200, i got 36fps. love it
-
The_Observer 9262 is the best:)
I didn't see much difference in DX9 and DX10 screen shots from Crysis.
-
I see huge difference in the volumetric lighting, especially volumetric lighting. How the sun's, lightbulbs, etc conform to the relative postion of the enemies and so forth (add tongue to the floor). Then the parralox mapping is really accentuated, especially in the cave stage right before the alien ship. Other than that no major difs.
-
i think i am gonna uninstall crysis, only 20 mins gameplay and i already had motion sickness
-
what do you guys use for system monitoring? my notebook hardware control seems like reading fault value.
edit, i just installed RMclock, both programs are showing that CPU is running at 2.4Ghz constantly, any idea?
solved: they both outdated -
isn't dx10 going to be officially support for xp by microsoft?

ROFL your too weak to press buttons...

are you actually the frail woman on your avatar?
im drunk
btw those online pictures are a bogus, shameless microsoft self-promotion
oh yeah, you shouldn't worry about the modest heat anyways: you are not supposed to rest your wrists on the laptop; that is how you get carpal tunnel... believe me. -
haha...i just feel uncomfortable for such a big change all of a sudden
-
we have to thank the russian "programmers" and the Alky Project guys for bringing us DX10 in our good ole XP.

My understanding is that there is no "unlocking" of DX10; it is an entirely new system structure. If memory serves (which it may not), a major part of Vista was moving from the DLL model (on which DX9 and before are based) to a new basic structure for how the computer runs at a system level. Therefore, there is no functionality that is "locked out" in XP; rather, the system would have to be completely jerry-rigged and back-ported to work in XP.
DX10 working in XP would more properly be described as a hacked and ported library, not an "unlock". I can't imagine it would run particularly well under XP either. -
The questions is : is this legal?
-
-
Well it`s not a guess here.
I`m trying to figure out if it`s worth it.
I mean I have a DX9 card,and already had Vista with DX10 but couldn`t use it.
Is there a real advantage you XP Dx10 users see in this? -
Its very minimal at best. -
Well, minimal or not, what is it ?
-
Mostly particle effects, better looking smoke, water, etc...
"better" being used very loosely. -
No. Arh. NO.
I have a DX9 card. WILL IT DO ANYTHING IF I PUT DX10 ON IT?
There, easiest way to put it. -
we had a thread few months back where we caught MS pics.
they put Edited and enhanced screenshots for DX10 and lame pics for DX9
Lithus is right...
It is a small small gain in quality but a HUGE drop in framerate.
for now its best to use DX9
unless u have 8800 Ultra in SLI -
-
As far as legality goes, I would think the threats might be patent law (depending on what MS patented) and the DMCA (since Windows is copy protected, and reverse engineering DX10 would probably require cracking Vista).
-
do you guy think that its waste of 8800mgtx to run it under dx9?
-
No, since those cards are also optimized for DX9. You'll still be using most (if not all) of the available power of the card.

question why in gods name did they bother to make direct x10 if it is basically useless????
-
You can ask the same question about Windows ME 1 & 2...Vista. LOL.
-
So basically I'm the only one satisfied with dx10? The difference may be minimal, but for those who are picky about the "little things" in games such as I, it makes quite a big difference. Yes, Im with you on the framerate drop and how the performance/quality aren't proportional, but that doesn't matter to some. Im EXTREMELY happy with dx10, and very lucky to have a card that can play Crysis on all very high settings, save for high physics and medium postprocessing. I play on a relatively lower resolution though, and that is one downfall. But it looks so theatrical, and for those who are good at spotting details, it's completely worth it in my opinion.
Venting done.

I've done a comparison on dx9 lighting and dx10 lighting. Notice how the sunlight completely conforms to each individual leaf.
I used my max res (1920 x 1200) to allow best viewing, so the dl is a little big (almost 9 megs), so only dl if you really are interested in one of the more major difs between dx9 and dx10.
http://www.mediafire.com/?dd1vntmjloy
You'll notice there is pretty much no difs between dx9 and dx10 textures, but if you look in the background at the water, you'll notice that dx10 water is VASTLY better than dx9 water, especially in the reflections aspect.
P.S. Im hoping this won't result in any flaming. But if it does, it does. Im just trying to make a point. -
The difference in the texture is that DX9's maximum is 4096x4096 while DX10 is 8192x8192, and most games still use somthing like 2048x2048 so...
For DX10 under XP, it's only the librairies that allow you to run DX10-only apps on XP/DX9 card. Pretty much like you have DX9.0C installed on XP with a DX8.1 card. You won't get DX10 randering and I won't believe otherwise I see a video of a windows mode Lord of The Rings: Online randering Dynamic Shadows on XP.
Want to know how I know that? Easy, it doesn't even requiee a DX10 graphics card and the DX9 cards are physically unable the shader 4.0. Of course, like said in the Alky Project page, they can compile it down to native code, but don't expect the performancs. It's even said "to play DX10 only games", not "to enjoy the directX10 features on XP!" -
blast it all... dx10 is not abut visual, it is about physics. it can address so many more objects than dx9, play crysis multi in 9 and 10... you will NOT see, but you WILL notice.
-
That's what I've been saying for over a year. I'm playing World in Conflict and everyone says there are no differences. I see a lot mysef. God Rays, dynamic clouds/smoke, more realistic explosions if you are zoomed....
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
dx10 hasn't offered much of anything yet except framerate drops. it hasn't made any significant improvements come about in most games. even in crysis, the "dx 10" effects can run in dx9, faster.
-
WOW. There are some closed-minded peeps on this forum. Im done here.
-
I here ya Pimp.... I am all about best quality and performance... if my system can handle it.
But most of the computer owners do not care because they do not have the hardware to get decent gaming performance at medium settings... let alone utilize the DX10 eye-candy. -
Gophn, since you have a DX9 card, why bother with DX10 then?
-
I did not install DX10 on my notebook.
I installed it on a custom desktop w/ 8800 GTS and Q6600 (@ 3.0GHz)... that I am building for my little sister. -
Pimpaholic, thanks for the pics, they do look quite different to me indeed, especially the water.
-
Oh I see.
Well. When I`ll get my DX10 card, I`ll get DX10 also...
Until then, DX9 rules -
