Edit: I put this thread on tech bargain forum but i think it would be appropriate for this forum as well. So I'm putting up on this thread for you guys to take a look.
I was surfing around at slickdeals.net and saw this thread and
I want to share it with you guys, so here it is and take a look:
Also here's the link for the software list

-------------------------------------------------
I saw the thread earlier about the Windows 7 release being available on MSDNAA and thought this might be a post useful for some. The new OS was not available through my school. Mods, please feel free to merge with the other post, but I believe this warrants a separate thread. This is only good for CS, CE, and EE students, however, you do NOT have to be enrolled in any computer classes!
MSDNAA is the academic version of MSDN. You must be enrolled in a college or university to benefit from the program. However, it gives you free access to $1000s of dollars worth of Microsoft software.
As many of you may know. All Computer Science, Computer, and Electrical Engineers who are still in school are eligible for an IEEE Student membership. IEEE Student Membership will cost you $15 for a year until August 15 (tomorrow). Sign Up here.
Now the interesting part. Beginning in June, all IEEE student members were extended access to the IEEE MSDNAA website. Previously it was open only to the computer society. Information here. [ieee.org]
So, if you are an IEEE student member, they are telling you that you have to renew your membership to access the MSDNAA. This is not true. Go to this "forgot password" site [e-academy.com] and enter the email address that you purchased your IEEE student membership. Check your email, and you should have a password to the MSDNAA. This will work even if you have already graduated, providing that you still have an active IEEE student account. You will be able to access the repository immediately.
If you aren't an IEEE Student member, and you are still eligible, PLEASE JOIN. It is worth the $30 (or $15 if ordered by today or tomorrow) just for the software, but it is also something else to list on your resume. Look around and see if you can find some IEEE societies that interest you, because those memberships will really stand out on your resume. If you are ordering today, keep in mind that the MSDNAA account will not be activated immediately. (It could take up to 8 days. It is the same way if you are signing up through your school. But then again, Win 7 isn't due out until October 22nd.) You should receive an email notifying you when it is activated.
-
sweet find , i was thinking of joining ieee in my colledge
-
so i just signed up student acct for $15
and they say it takes upto 8days to process and get msdn acct.
So hopefully i'll get it and i might cancel win7 professional preorder from amazon hmmm -
you will be getting an email from msdn with acctname and password within 8 days. Once you receive it, you can go to the link from above and download software.
-
i got sign up for $12.5
thanks!!!
expecting to download W7 ultimate soon -
Jayayess1190 Waiting on Intel Cannonlake
-
just to make sure theres no confusion:
IEEE Student Membership will cost you $15 for a year until August 15
So $15 signup fee will end it tomorrow. -
Very cool. I'm glad I'm still in university.
-
Very nice! Just signed up.
-
Does this apply to the UK too?
-
Darn! Didn't think i qualified but apparently I do. Major is "Information Technology in Business and Education"
I'll probably sign up for the other goodies they have though
Nice find! -
-
Computer Engineering here, and I have free access to MSDNAA.
Windows 7 64bit here I come. -
so how is IEEE related to MSDNAA?
I registered for it anyway. Hope it works so I can download windows 7.
However, I don't see it listed anywhere on the website.
Edit: only windows 7 professional is listed, but not Ultimate. Does anyone have any clue when it's available? -
I heard somewhere that ultimate will be released later at msdnaa. can i register considering I am not a tech student or student for that matter?
-
Yup, win7 professional for the moment but I also heard ultimate will be released at msdnaa later as well. But I will be satisfied with the professional version for now. Besides, there are other softwares I could dl too.
-
OK so I signed up for IEEE, whats the next step?
-
ultimate version of windows (at least for vista) is never released on msdnaa. i have msdnaa access from my school and it clearly stated that. they do offer the enterprise edition (for vista) though (which is the same as ultimate feature-set wise) and i wouldn't be surprised if they will also offer win7 enterprise in the near future.
in fact i have win7 from msdnaa provided by my school already. as a tip though, you will be given access to a 32-bit version and 64-bit version of windows 7 professional. this also means that you will be given 2 keys (1 for 32 and 1 for 64) but you can use both keys to activate either of the 2 (i used both keys for 64 bit)
also find the here is the info regarding the msdnaa access provided by ieee student membership
http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/students/branchresources/microsoftofferstudents.html -
I think you're right. However, I do hope enterprise will be released on MSDNAA as well.
Edit: Whether windows 7 ultimate version is released on MSDNAA or not depends on each school. So it's up to IEEE to release the Ultimate version of windows. -
http://blogs.msdn.com/ukacademia/archive/2009/08/06/windows-7-rtm-now-in-msdn-aa-and-elms.aspx
i assume this is the same release policy they have on other windows versions as well.
and this is where i get the "ultimate version not offered"
http://msdnaa.eecs.berkeley.edu/ -
I'll be content with Professional version, considering that I'll get for only $15, along with a bunch of other software that I, otherwise, would have to pirate.
However, I do hope they will release the enterprise version of windows 7, it's the same as Ultimate.
And as i said, it's up to each school to decide whether or not to release the Ultimate version on E-academy. -
"free access to $1000s of dollars worth of Microsoft software"? Oh wait, I already have that.
-
disappointing to see I'm a day late on this. $32? idunno...
-
-
oh! well then I'm in. thanks for the insight.
I'm a NSBE member but never got into IEEE. I guess because I was distracted by NSBE (was a National Exec. Officer). -
I just signed up with the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery). They also allow access to MSDNAA when you sign up as a student member (cost $19). I will be starting my masters degree in information technology in October so they accepted me with no issues.
I will get access to MSDNAA within 24hrs I can't wait to get win 7 pro x64! -
Dual booting Vista and Win 7 Ultimate x64 , it's sweet!
-
So if I sign up for the year, I can download any software listed there for free and use it as long as I can?
I see the Win7 Prof version there. So that's the RTM version that's going to be released in October?
Will Office 2010 be available as well as Win7 Ultimate with product key?
So as soon as I pay, I can download any softwares listed?
It would've been nicer if I found out few days earlier but I was going to upgrade to Win 7 RC anyway.. so $32 isn't bad I guess considering how much S/W I can download.
I stopped at paying page, so anyone who signed up, please let me know!
Am I on the right track? http://i30.tinypic.com/2mcg50o.jpg
Thank you! -
I'm a full time student, but biochem instead of computer science or electrical engineering. Therefore, I don't deserve a discount because there is not as high a chance I will be working for MS in the near future.
In fact, as a medical researcher, I'll probably be working against MS! (wink wink)
Thanks for the consideration Microsoft. It's not like I need a decent operating system for my lowly, unimportant work. And as a student, I have more than enough money to lay down close to two balloons for the operating system I should have gotten when I paid full price for your **** one last year. Oh wait, I don't. Guess I'll stick to piracy instead.
I don't want to sound like I feel that Mircosoft somehow owes me the help. But Bill Gates has donated hundreds of millions of dollars as a philanthropist to education and particularly HIV/AIDS research. It makes no sense that he would ignore the people who are actually going to devote their lives towards finding cures for these diseases. You know, instead of just throwing money at the problem and kicking back with all the praise/recognition while all the scientists live forever in anonymity. -
I just received my access to MSDNAA; ACM took less than 24hrs to send me my login information!
I will be installing Windows 7 Professional sometime later this week. -
So where can i dl win7 ? this site is a joke.. i dont find anything :x
i´m logged in and bought it -

guys i browsed the ieee site for benefits , i only find windows vista business , are u sure that i ll be able to get windows 7??
NB: i live outside the US but i have ieee in my university -
I'm still waiting for email from msdnaa as well. -
and will they give each university different benefits , like u take windows 7 i take windows vista -
-
I also know each university have different softwares available from msdn. -
hmm what if i´m not on a university? i´m on high school now (so next year is my 13th school year). I registered with my school name (which wasnt in the list) and also bought the membership already. Will they take my money now and dont give me acces to win7 ? oO
or will i get my money back ?
or will it work? -
If you are part of the a medical research team, i'm sure that you can apply for some grant that would allow you to receive software that you can use from Microsoft. It's just that your rant about not being eligible for this program does not make sense because this program is not for you, this program is for students studying to become computer science and electrical engineers. in fact, the licenses that come with these software are "for academic use" and if you'd look closer most of the software available are development tools, OS's on the list represent a fairly small fraction and is included in the list so students have a chance to test software they make with the tools provided onto real production-level windows environments. I'm sure that there are Microsoft programs that are aimed specifically for your field and i'm sure you can inquire about such programs available specifically for your purpose. your department might even have some contracts for software with MS.
for students already in universities, just search google with your university's name and the keyword msdnaa and maybe you can reach your msdnaa portal for your school. -
So you pay $32 after you register and wait for MSDN to send you an e-mail to let you download softwares?
-
i wondered if the W7 professional is the full version...or just RTM?
-
-
-
yea, the one that's available at msdnaa is win7 pro RTM which is the FINAL version of it.
-
pro doesnt appear to come with minesweeper or solitaire
