MSDNAA within the last couple of days released Win7 Pro for download.
If you are a Comp Sci student or even maybe EE, see if you can get MSDNAA access. You'll get two copies of Vista Business, XP Pro x64, XP Pro x86, and two copies of Win 7 Pro, along with isos for everything, absolutely free.
This might help you if you don't know if you have MSDNAA access:

thanks for the info
-
Oh for the record, I graduated in June '09 with a comp sci degree from UC Irvine, and for some reason I still have MSDNAA access 2 months later.
And to reiterate, you get a completely legit CD key and iso from microsoft. -
if only they did something like this for military service members....
-
that'd be nice, then i'd get a 3rd copy of win7.
-
Hmm win 7 pro is not listed in the software list for my college. I'll contact the administrator to add it to the list, and maybe the guys from the CIS dept as backup.
-
sweet, uuniversity of toronto is on that
could I get it now before courses start?
-
you should be able to, you just need to figure out how to get a login/password.
at uc irvine, they just made it the same as our school login and password. -
UofT is sort of complicated..you need to fill out forms manually and submit them to the right people.
-
hmm okay, ill read up on that on the UofT msdnaa site, see a few things already
-
If you attend a local Win7 launch party MSFT is handing out Win7 Ultimate to everyone. Some of teh larger parties will have a limited number of Server2008 R2 copies as well.
-
Damn, why are engineering and comp sci students so special?
-
You can be more special

"4" (yes, four. Separate keys for English/French and separate keys for x86/x64. All interchangeable) Windows 7 Professional keys for $20 if you're a "student". Then again, we're all "students" of life, are we not?
Maybe you could recoup your costs somehow...and it'll end up being free if you catch my drift. -
A somewhat better deal than TechNet, at this point, haha.
Similar deal for IEEE. http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?&t=1505729 (Nevermind.., someone already posted this in Notebook and Tech Bargains a while ago.) -
Quick question, I'm downloading Windows 7 at the moment from MSDNAA, what can I do for the drivers? Will the latest drivers from the computer manufacturer (for Vista) work?
-
It is there for my college but not for my major.
-
You can request for your department to add it. However, it's simply easier to pay the $19 for the ACM and thus, 2 product keys, and get access to more programs than are generally available through a school's MSDNAA account, as they make strict deals with Microsoft on what they personally offer from the list of available software.
-
Because Microsoft wants them to develop for the latest operating systems with the latest software.
Is a history or english major's job going to drastically change because a new OS came out? Probably not. -
They could compose documents that much easier with the improved capabilities of notepad.
They could also better stream and record the History Channel, while doing some folding in the background.
-
Yes Vista drivers will work fine.
If not Windows Update will use your Hardware ID to search the internet for drivers. It actually worked for my TV tuner and mouse, which was very convenient. -
My M17x runs perfectly without any drivers besides what W7 had/found by itself. It found the gfx drivers too.
-
Apparently environmental science students are special too, because I also have access to MSDN-AA (Home, Pro, and Ultimate) as well as Microsoft's DreamSpark program. That's how I got Windows Server 08.
-
Also a heads up! If you are an IEEE member (including student member), you have the same access to msdnaa as you would from a university. I got my Win7 Professional x64 edition last week. It's RTM. They also have Ultimate, but it is only RC.
Edit: Sorry for the repost. I read up the screen after posting, but msdnaa is a great place to try new tools for engineering/science students. -
That's even better, lots of EE and comp sci don't have access to the Ultimate version of windows 7.
-
Damn I want that! Why this is not avalible in Mexico???
.
Im an engineering student!

Thanks for this info!
-
The Civil and environmental Engineering department at my Uni get MSNDAA too.
As well as business students apparently...
-
So does the Business Department at my school.
-
Look at the post on the 2nd page about getting a free copy. I live in UK and stilll got the deal with 4 licenses for Win 7 Pro. You can get it too.
-
You don't get ultimate with IEEE membership, you get Pro.
He's referring to Ultimate RC, which everyone has. -

So am I supposed to ask for the login info to my professors?
-
With my university all I need to use was the account details for my University email account.
-
not sure. At my school the Computer Science club has all the register keys, whoever wants one they just sign up and gets a key to register.
-
If a friend is in that major and qualifies but doesn't actually want to use the version of Windows that he gets is it legal and fine for me to use it instead?
-
I just got mine from my schools MSDNAA. Glad it was free.
-
Do you have to be a major in one of those departments or not?
-
Depends on your school. The only way to know is to ask the admin of the MSDNAA website of your school. Some only offer it to CS/Engineering students whereas some offer it to ALL.
-
Thanks for replying. And where would I find that person? In a certain department or in a central office that does all the IT for the school?
-
Is this only for the US? Because I'm a Comp Sci student but in Canada lol
-
It's an international thing.
Google "your university's name + MSNDAA" should do the trick.
-
ah thank you
I found the Windows 7 "free" thing but is this just an RC? It can't possibly be the full thing correct?
http://msdn03.e-academy.com/elms/Storefront/ViewProductDetails.aspx?campus=sfu_cs&p=1438 -
It's full version of 7 Professional as well, your admin probably didn't update the page yet. Just send off an email and they'll have it up. Are you a RFDer (you should if you're a Canadian!)? If not, read this thread:
http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=776815
I think UBC is somewhere in there (that is, I'm assuming you go to UBC but there's info on practically all major schools in there). -
Thanks. I'll probably just wait until school actually starts (on Sept. 8th) then ask the prof or admin about it.
PS: And no I'm not from UBC
SFU Comp Sci ftw

This is not the same as the MSDN-AA thing you get for joining and paying a $19 membership fee to join ACM.
With that you get 4-free keys + access to a bunch of software, as long as your a university student your go to go. -
Just spoke to an IT manager of my school. Apparently I need to be enrolled in a CIS course to get consent from the instructor. Looks like ACM is the only option.

Our University only has 3 computer professors and they all are retards. They even dont know what a MSDN is. I was asking my login for MSDN and they were just giving me my college id.
-
Damn. I didn't register for any comp-sci courses this semester and my MSDNAA status was just revoked. And I just ordered a copy of Windows 7 Pro x64 but now I can't access the serial. Hopefully they'll let me back in since I have CS courses lined up for the spring.
-
I have downloaded both the 64 and x86 versions but I do not see how to get 2 more Keys?
-
download the french language ones, they can be used for the english versions as well.
-
Yep that was what I did....thanks!
