I sold my laptop to a friend(a long time ago, but now he's finally taking it), so I decided to try SP1, seeing I was reloading it to the original factory setup. Here's my results with a Toshiba X205-S9359:

Loaded up SP1 just like is stated in the first post and things "seemed" a little quicker than before... until I tried unzipping a 14mb file, which took about 2 minutes(same as before). Then tried the Window Experience Index and got an error saying a driver or component won't let WEI complete. I tried various drivers(video/audio,signed/beta).....tried deleting the older WEI files....tried everything that I could find on google.... Decided I'd had enough and reloaded the factory software(reformatted), and delivered to my friend. If this is the final version(I doubt it), I'll stick with XP Pro on my Sager 9262 until SP2. I'll wait for the SP1 final and load it on my HP and see where it goes from there. If it's working good for everone else, then great. I'm just posting my results witn an X205, that is all.

It is the final version. It really is, trust me. Your installation might be ****ed up, hence the problems.

All seemed well during install, but true, you never know. Also dealing with a factory install of Vista Ultimate...., but I figured if it didn't work perfectly, I would hold off on installing on the Sager. I did the same when XP first came out, waited over a year before I could run it problem free(talking about supporting all of my devices and games and other software). Vista has been ok to me, but there's plenty of times where I wanted to reformat my hd and load xp and be done with it... If I could just leave my stuff alone.... I see stuff like this(SP1 available) and just have to try it! :D

Thx s0ap! I'm trying to fresh install vista and then just install these two updates before applying SP1. :) couldn't care less about the other WU updates since I presume SP1 will cover all those.

After the reg hack and installing the previous 2 updates, I got SP1 shown, but it shows as SP1 Release Candidate 1 Beta. Is this really the final version?

I downloaded the first two updates, restarted, but the service pack itself never shows under windows update. Same on my friends computer. Did they fix it?

Guys the service pack will only show if you have your OS set to the 5 main languages. I had mine set to English (Australian) and sp1 didn't show up for me after i installed the 2 updates prior. I then changed my language to English (US) and SP1 showed up in WU. For those having problems this may be the cause.

When I try to copy paste the reg hacks in the original post, the last one seems too long for command prompt. It won't let me copy past "/d dcf99ef8-d784..."

Any way around this? I'm kind of stuck half way.

P.S. I've tried typing the rest out, too, but no good.

I am a bit doubtful of the SP1 gotten through the reg hack. The build number checks out okay, but DxDiag still shows DirectX 10 and not 10.1.

    Same here...

It shows as Release Candidate, 584MB.

If this is final, then why does it appear as RC1?

Amazing. My unmodified Vista disc took up 6.09GB of hard drive space. After vLite-ing it, it's now taking up only 2.12GB. :)

My ISO file is 701MB. Perfect size for a CD-RW. He he.

I just did the reg hack and upgraded to SP1 from WU. Even though the WU page titled the update as RC1, but the computer is now specified as Service Pack 1 (no RC1). The entire process took only 3 hours which is quicker than I thought (including downloading and installing), and so far nothing is broken.... yet.

PS. Where can I check the actual version number?

    - Open Registry Editor by typing regedit in the Run dialogue box

    - Navigate to the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

    - In the right pane, you will see lots of registry subkeys and its value date. Here’s how you read the value for some of the keys.
    ProductName

    - The product name of Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008 edition on the system. For example, Windows Vista (TM) Ultimate.

    EditionID

    - The edition of the operating system. For example, Ultimate.

    - BuildLabEx

Contains build and revision number. For example, 6000.16386.x86fre.vista_rtm.061101-2205 where first portion will give the build number (6000) and the next set of number if revision number (16386).

So I take it that this is the RTM final version, and not an RC build?

Any of you see any noteable differences with SP1? I have just read this morning that SP1 has some new driver incompatability issues that pre-sp1 didn't have, and that might have been the problems I was having.... not sure. Working perfectly for everyone else? Extacting compressed files, anyone see an improvement?

Thank God for Virtual Machines. First rule of installing new software: Never install new software. I always wait a cycle (3 - 6 months) before I install anything that could break a machine. Anyone remember when SP2 first came out?

    Maximus,

What do I do if command prompt won't allow me to type in the full code you provided for the THIRD reg hack? The keys get stuck at a certain point and command prompt won't let me paste a single letter more.

I deleted the first two reg entries, per your instructions, but haven't been able to do the third...weird...?

Have you tried typing the code manually?

Paste the code into notepad first then start typing it manually in DOS.

I am uploading the Final Build of the service pack 1 on www.4shared.com now

should be done in a few hours.

Will update you with the download links. ;)

What is the current Language pack you are using. Others have reported that Australian English for example prevented the update from showing up.

EDIT: Also my disk space jumped from 140gb to 170gb, a 30gb increase! Thanks Microsoft!

Well, SP1 installed without any problems.

Mines was identified as RC1 I gather this is the right version?

Lappy seems a bit nipper now, I like to reformat the drive when a SP comes out so I probably will when it becomes public release.

I noticed on the last page some people are having difficulty with copy and pasting the command, just hit Win+R (or start then type run) and then copy and paste the code 1 at a time there and hit OK, and repeat the process for the next two.

    Cheers.

Well I was playing team fortress 2 for a couple of hours, and I didnt have a disconnects or crashes like I did with the previous version. Now, this is on the gameing side of course, I havent really tested out the other programs I have on my comp for crashes, freezes, etc.

EDIT: Oh and marty go to page 7 and look under scifimikes post. He has a screenshot of the version number, thats the final sp1 version.

I've just spent the last few hours installing this update, i did the reg hack, then everything was going ok, updates KB983371 and KB937287 installed ok, then the big upate SP1

What happened was WU installed Service Pack 1 Release candidate 1 KB936330.

So, to be honest i'm abit pissed because i want is the RTM version NOT RC1.

    Rubbish.

Ok after alot of looking around on the web about this, i think WU has installed the RTM version (6.0.6001.18000), (look in System Information)

Whats confusing is there are various versions of KB936330, which are RC1 and RC2, also i learn't that RC2 IS the RTM version.

In System , under Windows Edition, Service Pack 1 is shown with no build version, plus is no “Evaluation Copy” watermark in the bottom right corner of desktop

Why do Microsoft make things Very confussing............
