IE puts each tab in its own process, like Chrome, so if a tab crashes it is less likely to crash the whole browser.

I wonder if that method is in response to Chrome's system, or if was thought up independently. Great feature either way.

I think IE had it before Chrome did. Here is how Google does it:

Interesting. That reminds me, weren't there some early rumors IE8 would be ditching Trident in favor of WebKit? Was that just speculation, or was it based on anything MS said?

I can open NBR in FF without a glitch. In IE8 NBR will open about 75% then it just closes the whole browser? I have looked in the Internet Options page for anything that would stop it from loading but can't find anything. Like I said, it's just this site.

Sorry about that, it must be really frustrating. I have no problem on NBR and IE8. It is always something simple but something you never look at. Wish I could help ya...

No issues here. My bank site said my browser was unsupported, but I just clicked the Compatibility button and all was well again.

I'm really liking IE 8... it's noticeably faster than Firefox for me, without any real downside I've noticed yet... it may be hard for me to go back to the 'fox now.

I take back what I said earlier! I like IE8 and I am finding it difficult to go back to Opera (though the latter will always be on my system, configured in just the way I like it).

I have been able to configure IE8 into quite a nice and smooth experience. There are a few nagging problems, but I also found that over the last 24 hours, quite a few of the things troubling me mysteriously solved themselves. I alluded to this in an earlier post. I have no idea how this has happened especially because there have been no updates to IE8 from MS as far as I and the Windows Update on my machine know.

Possibly windows "self optimization". :D :)

I think it may have become smoother on NBR for me... although typing is still lagging in the "advanced reply option".

That is precisely what I was alluding to in my earlier post! Maybe MS should have labelled the IE8 release as Voodoo! :D

But the fact remains that there has been a sudden and marked improvement - wholly independent of anything that I may have done...and I am not complaining!!!

Now about security: Is there a way by which a non-tech person like me can check on the security of IE8? What I'd like to do is to compare Opera (9.64) and IE8 using the same tests.

    Thanks

After using IE8 for a while, I found is CCcleaner works a blit slower with IE8, also some saved page setting cookies are only working partcialy (might be a CC cleaner thing), when loading some pages, the hyperlinks are not working, not even after a refresh, but when I close down the tab and re-open then go back to the same page, the hyperlinks work, I haven't had any crashes and Im still digging into IE8, so these are the problems I have encoutered so far, does anybody have the same simular problems?

I don't seem to be experiencing this. I just ran CCleaner. It ran with no noticeable decrease in speed. Further, IE8 functioned normally - as far as I can make out. No crashes yet either.

The CC cleaner slowed down a touch at the beginning of a clean (somthing like it was calculating space) then wisked through the rest, not a big deal, but one thing I am getting suspicious about is the operation of Flash V10,0,22,87 ,the previous version of Flash was bad in IE7 and FF, then the current version 10,022,87 came out and seemed to fix the hangs and crashes Flash was causing, I am starting to notice irregular things with IE8 pages that have a-lot of Flash adds in it, I have done a bit of testing with this and in my own opinion, I think there is a Flash problem that maybe freezing pages randomly.
Will report more as I am going to throw a bigger test at it.

CCleaner usually takes a few days/weeks to release a tweaked version for cleaning new broswers.

It was over 4 months Adobe was pissing around blamming MS, then Adobe put out the fix, I hate to see how long this will take and who Adobe will get into a pissing match with.
By the way DetlevCM, thanks for confiming the Flash problem for me.

I've installed it on my desktop (P4 3066mhz, 1gb RDRAM, WinXP, Radeon 9800XT) and I am extremely disappointed and shocked. I'm not having any scrolling issues, but the browser takes ages to load up...it's taken at least 2-3 minutes to open the browser every time. Trying to start an InPrivate session made my system hang for about ten minutes. This continues to happen after rebooting several times and trying to open the browser repeatedly.

How can I uninstall this and go back to IE7 (which worked perfectly from day 1)?

By the way, I updated the flash player and the problem persists....
    It crashes the tab...

To clarify my problem: once the browser is actually open everything is very fast (but for some reason the quick reply box on this page lags when I type) it just takes forever to actually open the browser after double clicking IE on my desktop.

The lag when typing seems even worse in the "advanced mode" - I think its the same for everyone...

For me IE8 has a short lag - then the page is generally loaded in no time... let's see how its ettles :)

Speaking about lag, it actually eats some characters...I think

So how can I uninstall this and go back to IE7?

It's also made my bootup take about 45 seconds longer and now AIM 5.2 (which shouldn't have any connection to IE) won't connect.

Really? Wow! Hmmm...doesn't do that to my machine...at least as of now! BTW, could it be its because of the specs of your machine...assuming that the specs mentioned in your sig is the one that you are using?

I am on a 1.8Ghz, 2GB, 250 GB (5400 rpm), x3100, Vista HP machine and I have ~ 20 secs to boot up and less than 20 secs to shut down. And on this machine IE8 is fast - quite comparable to Opera.

I have read at some places that XP is not very accomodating to IE8...people who have installed IE8 on XP machines did face some problems...though it is always possible I misunderstood what was being said.

I guess it just wasn't designed to work with XP like it was with Vista and 7. Not a big deal, I just want to go back to IE7.

...Wasn't this the reason Microsoft and Netscape got into a lawsuit with each other over bundling Internet Explorer with the OS? My economics professor was a consultant for Microsoft (even though he felt Netscape was right,) in the case and the Web via Netscape eventually replacing the OS was the reason Microsoft was threatened by Netscape, needing to create Internet Explorer.

This is dirty. Jesus Microsoft. They should have lost that case.

I haven't experienced any crashes so far with the newest version of flash player and IE 8.
Even with IE 7 the newest version of flash player stopped crashing IE 7.
