It shows a progress report, ala Windows 98, if that's your thing.![]()

Is the Intel X-25 Generation 1 (no TRIM support) for $100 worth it? I am not sure if I should buy it because it doesn't support TRIM. Any known issues for this drive?
-
the most important thing is, if you don't have a SSD, and need to defrag occasionally, do it manually, not seat as an automatic background process - as overkill as daily automated antivirus system-wide scans.
-
YES GRAB IT QUICK!!!! or send me the info.
-
Okay, thanks. I think I am going to buy it right now.
-
2nd hand? If not, where are you buying it? Newegg has it brand new X18-M G1 80GB for $150. If it not used for very long then it is well worth it. Only thing you have to deal with is running a program that does the function of TRIM manually maybe once a week. Pretty fast SSD though just a little bit slower than the G2.
-
The seller says it's brand new, not in original packaging. He seems pretty reputable. He unpackaged it because he bought it and to reduce luggage space he took it out of the packaging.
He says it's still sealed (the wrapping on the SSD, I guess)/ -
Why is this? What's bad about overkill?
-
Wow - he lowered his price to $90.00 including shipping. It seems to good to be true.. He doesn't seem like he's out to get me.. It's via PayPal.
Don't know - what do you guys think? He says it's Brand New. -
Go for it, then dispute. But i think something has to be wrong... but you never know.
-
I would think so as well, I am not sure though. Either he's very good at what he does or he doesn't know the value..?
-
If you can be refunded back then do it.
-
The problem is with PayPal though. They decide what to do, not me. He can use a fake tracking number etc and PayPal might by that.
Also, $90.00 is a lot of money for me, even for this SSD. That's also part of the problem LOL. Yes, it's an amazing deal but it's still expensive for my budget right now. -
There is an application to tell your Windows boot time.
What is the name of the application? Where do I get it? -
It's called STOPWATCH, and comes with software packages such as BUYACLOCK.
-
-
It's called you're not being funny.
There is an application that gives an accurate boot time log. -
because it is excessive - as in unnecessary - further, they are activities that reduce system performance every time they run.
-
stopwatch from a handphone works well.
You can count with/without BIOS post time, shutdown alone, reboot, or boot alone.. etc -
Okay, I ran it. Nothing popped up. How do I tell now?
-
I just downloaded it again and then ran it...no prob.
-
It pops up, asks me to restart, but after I restart, nothing pops up to tell me how fast my boot-up was. How do I find the information that shows this?
-
It's built into windows--in fact, any boot time program youget will simply pull the time from here.
START ORB, type
eventvwr
in the search box, press ENTER
EVENT VIEWER WILL APPEAR
Expand the APPLICATION AND SERVICES LOGS > MICROSOFT > WINDOWS > DIAGNOSTICS-PERFORMANCE > OPERATIONAL
Look under category for the most recent BOOT PERFORMANCE MONITORING.
There will probably be several. Look through them until you find
WINDOWS HAS START UP:
BOOT DURATION: XXXXX
Boot time is given in milliseconds so move the decimal over 3 spaces and your boot time is xx.xxx -
One could probably even write a nice little powershell script that would put that into a nice little pop-up window, with the formatting even!
-
Seems fishy to me, to be honest.. Why would he buy that drive and then sell it before even using it?
There is a chance that he is really being honest, but $90 just seems too good to be true... Maybe it's stolen or it's fake or something?
But if it's real... what about warranty? Would you still have warranty if you bought it from this guy? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Warranty is usually independent of who you bought it from. That, of course, assumes that the drive is still actually in warranty.
Personally, I'd go for it. How's his feedback? -
Ya seconded......ssds are pretty much indestructable and the price is bang on.
-
Ah....can't wait for the day we can pick up one of these for $100 retail...
-
the price is a little bit too good to be true.. might be a scam... be careful...but if the buyer has positive rep , it should be allright.
-
I think you can run them on idle time of your computer. but also think that the performance boost in newer disks is quite small. Tried everything on X200, perfectdisk is my favorite.
-
How do I enable TRIM support.
Also, how do I tell if it's enabled?
It is an Intel. -
install windows 7?
-
It's installed.. Isn't their a command to run or something?
-
G2? The firmware should up to date, but if it isn't update it...and you can grab the intel SSD toolbox if you want to.
-
Yes, its G2. How do I tell if it's up-to-date? It was manufactured in 2010 so I assume the firmware is fine?
-
Should be okay then. Latest firmware update was end of 2009 in Dec.
-
I downloaded Intel Toolbox. I ran that optimizer but stopped it because it was taking FOREVER. It was at 18% after 12 minutes.. Is this normal for a first run? Was it okay to stop although it wasn't done?
Am I using a "34nm" SSD? -
I've never had it take that long. If you system is still running you should be okay
.
-
Am I using a "34nm" drive.
-
If it is a G2, then yes. 50nm is the older G1 process size.
-
Yes, it's a G2. I am not happy that Intel's SSD Optimizer is taking so long.. Are you sure it didn't take long on the first run? Why would it be so slow for me?
-
You shouldn't really even need to run it. Your SSD performance should be close to 100% anyways. Don't worry about it too much. TRIM should be working if you have W7 and the firmware is up to date.
edit: Just enjoy your SSD
.
-
The SSD optimizer does take a while, during which you should not use your computer at all. Press run, and go off and eat dinner. Come back, and it should be done. Patience is a virtue
-
How do I tell what firmware I am using? This way I will know whether to update it.
Does updating it format your OS? -
25 minutes later and it's at 14%. That's not normal.. or is it!?
-
chilllllllllll
-
Burn the firmware disk and boot from it. If your firmware is already up to date, the updater will tell you and prompt you to remove the disk and reboot.
Yes, updating firmware clears all data off your SSD. -
Wait what? Updating firmware does not wipe your drive. It has the potential risk of bricking it, so you should have anything important backed up. But what midnightsun? o.o
-
Turns out there was a new update.. Installed it..
Windows still works fine, and I am wondering if TRIM wasn't on before will it be on now or do I need to reformat or something? -
Sorry, I got confused. Several other SSD manufacturers' firmware updates (OCZ, Corsair) did reformat the entire drive, clearing away all data, but after reading the firmware tool Readme, it appears Intel's update does not.
I flashed an empty SSD anyway, so I assumed the Intel drive would be the same - thanks for the correction, jaredy!
If you have the latest firmware update, TRIM should be working fine in Windows 7. Stop worrying about it and just enjoy your fast load times
