thanks to v3loc1ty2.0 for this guide.
Have encountered some problems. Can not change language. Have downloaded
language packs, but still does not work.
Used me of ISO Method and Windows 7 x64 English.
Have downloaded Swedish. When i run the downloaded .EXE language pack nothing happens.
I have not the choice "Install / Unistall languages" that is in the picture below.. that area is completely empty for me
Everything went fine with the installation and it seems that the computer works fine.
Just need to get the swedish. -
Hej.
According to Microsoft, you can only change language in Ultimate edition. There are workarounds available tho.
Use a Swedish ISO from my sig (remove ei.cfg if needed), or install language with Vistalisator. -
I've heard some cases where using Vistalizator flagged installation as non-genuine afterwards. I haven't witnessed any such case personally but I would recommend using proper install .iso/disc from the beginning to avoid any nasty surprises later
-
KLF: Good to know. It's been a while since I used Vistalizator.

1. How can I create a bootable flash drive without the Windows CD? There is a set of instructions on page 2 of the thread, but it says you need a CD.
2. If I mess it up somehow, or if there's an error somewhere, will I still be able to recover what they put on it? Or will the computer just be useless?
3. How do I activate it once it's on my USB drive? It says "boot it and install." Does that mean go into the USB and click on the file, or does that mean you go into something before bootup and do something else? -
See the two links in my sig.
Walkthrough is there. -
That one seems a lot simpler than this one; are they the exact same results? This one wants you to go through so many steps, and in your link it's just one download (for the most part). I just want to be sure it's the same.
Basically, you download the ISO, download the tool, and copy it to the USB drive?
Also, "17. Insert your Windows 7 installation DVD into the DVD drive." When it says this it means the ISO just downloaded, correct? You don't actually need a DVD?
Thank you for the links, they are very helpful. Sorry for the many clarifying questions, I'm just afraid of messing the computer up more than it already is! -
Here to help.
1.) Same results: a clean install. The directions here are a bit more confusing because it references things like changing the language.
2.) Yes.
3.) 17 does not apply to you, nor does any of the directions to "Manually" create your Windows 7 Bootable DVD/USB key.
All you need to do is download the ISO and download the tool. Launch the tool and the rest is a breeze.
Don't be afraid to ask questions! 'Tis why this forum exists. Best of luck. Cheers.

Awesome! One last question that I didn't think to ask; will wireless internet work automatically? I'm assuming it will still have IE, but somewhere it said you may need a driver to get internet? Most of the drivers I'll be installing will come from the internet.
-
Windows 7 installs with IE8 automatically. W7 will use the default Windows drivers for you WLAN card, but it's always better to make sure you have your drivers on hand.
After making your boot key, download all of your computer's necessary drivers and place them in a new folder on the key labeled "drivers". This way, after successfully installing W7, you may access your boot key as a normal flash drive and access all of your drivers!
-
Alright, thanks so much!
-
I used the ISO method and with the eicfg removal utility. When I try to boot into Windows Setup from the ISO, I get a message that: "Windows failed to load because a critical system driver is missing, or corrupt". The file is \Windows\System32\Drivers\lsi_sas2.sys
I tried to burn another CD from the ISO but it gives the same message. Does this probably mean that something got corrupted in the download? Has anyone else encountered something similar? -
Looks like I was right and it was something with the first file I downloaded. I'm able to run setup now.
Thank you so much for this thread. It's a life saver now that companies are no longer including Windows media when you purchase computers. -
thanks a lot for your post...
-
I'm sorry if this question has already been posted, but if I download these files and activate them and whatever, is this going to wipe my computer? Should I make a backup of all my files before installing it?
-
These are OS ISO files.. so if you "install" them you will be installing an Operating System. All your files will be wiped.. unless you're dual booting or running VMware.
Simple Answer: Yes. -
I have an Alienware preinstalled with Win7x64 Ultimate and a Qosmio preinstalled with Win7x64 HomePremium.
Not satisfied with 64bit, I installed the 32bit versions using copy of Win7 as mentioned in this thread. I remember never entering any Product Key on these two machines. I have done this many months ago and had forgotten all about it until yesterday, when I installed Win7 on an Acer. This time, I noticed I have to activate Win7 within 30 days.
How was Win7 able to know not asking for Product Keys on the Alienware and Qosmio, while I have to enter it on the Acer? -
Wow glad to see that people have been hanging around - I haven't been around much lately, but now that school is over, I'll be around
-
So I just did this and apparently I also needed "backup-cert.xrm-ms" to complete the activiation. When running the "activation_backup.exe" I don't recall it giving me two files. Am I just SOL or what?
-
What make and model is that computer and was your previous windows installation factory original or have you done clean install before?
-
HP Pavilion dv6-6170us and my previous Windows 7 installation was factory original.
Gah, I feel so dumb. I honestly felt as though that was the easiest part of the whole process, yet I managed to mess up. -

Cobb, do you have the COA sticker on the back of the laptop? If you do, use that serial to activate your copy of Windows.
-
I can't think of any other simple reason than you didn't use the latest ABR beta version but the older ABR for Vista instead. It does just that, apparently everything works but it doesn't actually back up the certificate.
On that model, COA sticker could be under the battery. -
Yes, I do have a COA sticker and I just successfully activated. Thanks so much man!

I have a duel boot system wihth ubuntu on one hard drive, and a windows 7 Pro 32 bit on the other. I want to install 64 bit Win7 over the 32 bit win install, So I downloaded "Windows 7 x64 English Mirror 1" in ubuntu, put it on a flash drive, unplugged my ubuntu drive (because i didn't want windows to over write grub) booted in my win7 32 bit, moved it to the desktop, ran the thing to delete the ei.cfg file, and tried to burn it and got an error code after the verification was done that it wasn't right. Then i took my flash drive again and did the same thing on my laptop but used a different program to burn iso images that I've used succesfully many times before. I had it verify the burn after and it said it was good, so i put the disc in my desktop, and it won't boot from it. I checked my BIOs more than once and it's set to boot from CD first, so why isn't it, why does it keep booting into my windows 32 bit install?
If anyone has an md5 checksum I'd check it to see if it downloaded right but I have not seen one, I'm thinking thats why it isn't working. -
I was looking for some Vista ISOs as well before. Looks like the links are null and have been discontinued.
-
I think this is the best you can get these days.

I installed the new win7 in a non-system partion I activated and installed all the updates and requiered drivers and programs,
but i am wondering about the possibility of creating the recovery dvd in order to reinstall after a full formatting, is that possible please ? or I have to reactivate the win again ? -
Yes, use system image.
-
do these ISOs work on a OEM machine? my laptop has a boot problem and i was planning to reinstall windows using the iso with my reg key printed on the label underneath the battery. will it work?
-
Yes.

I downloaded the iso, but what am I supposed to do with the oscdimg? Just run it in the same directory as the iso? Or put it in the system32?
edit: tried burning twice, each time says CDBOOT: Couldn't find BOOTMGR
? -
Did you use the Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool?
-
I didn't see that mentioned on the first page. But I found a pcworld article that actually had isos for each specific version, so I downloaded that then used the usb download tool like it said. It's working now.
-
Best of luck.

You should have no problem. -
Does your computer meet hardware specifications?
Make sure you use "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" to create your bootable. -
I burned one of these discs using the windows usb/dvd tool, then gave the cd to my brother who needed a temporary OS to use for a new computer, and this thing baked my serial key into the cd. Is there a way to stop it from doing this?
-
What exactly do you mean by this?
If you mean that it baked your key into the install disk, I've never heard of the sort before. Has your brother activated Windows yet? -
I'm installing from Linux. How can I run the program to remove the thing that limits it to home premium? Can't I just delete the files myself?

If your Asus came with Windows 7 Ultimate, you can use that DVD to install windows 7.
After that, activate it using the serial number on the COA sticker of your laptop.
