It depends, some people are selling valid MSDN Keys which are only supposed to be used for DEVELOPMENT purposes. Some are even selling TECHNET sourced licenses which are only supposed to be used for non production, training purposes.

Very true. Don't forget those who are selling Upgrade keys and OEM keys. I, for one, would never buy a Windows key from ebay. That's bound to be a rip-off, and the legality is questionable, too.

By the way, shifting gears for a moment, I've seen ThinkStation desktops available without having to buy a Windows 7 license, and in one case, that translated into $150 savings. I have a FULL retail version of Win 7 Ultimate, and do not care to purchase more licenses than I need, i.e. 1.

Is there a way to buy a ThinkPad without a Windows license? There's gotta be, if you buy a new CTO model. Not online, obviously.

Hello guys, I have downloaded the ISO file and successfully burned on a DVD, I just want to ask, do I need to update my BIOS first before I do a clean install? my system is Acer Timeline 5810T, Bios = ver. 1.2, I have seen some posts that the BIOS should be updated to ver. 2.0 or 2.1 and I saw on the Acer website that there's 2 special edition BIOS ver. 2.0 and 2.1, are these BIOS necessary before performing a clean install of W7? thanks!

Is it a bad idea to burn the iso to a dual layer DVD? I've got like 25 of them, but no single layer ones.

thanks for this. I used this today to reinstall on my M11x. Only problem was the windows 7 iso usb maker didn't work for it, so I used another program to load the files over and create a bootable usb. Worked great!

Hi all, first post here and thanks to the OP for the links.

But did anyone experience sudden stops when downloading the direct iso file? I've tried it a bunch of times now, the 1st attempt it just stopped downloading about halfway through it, the most recent attempt it stopped at about 250mb into it. Does anyone know how to fix this or what the issue might be? Thanks in advance

    Hi,

I just downloaded the ISO method. I want to create an image on my external hard drive, but I have a lot of data there, and I dont want to format it. is it possible to create iso image on external HDD without actually formating it?

You should be able to. I've never been one to use optical drives, plus they're slow to boot, so I've been using bootable USB drives for a long time and a 2nd hard drive in place of a DVD burner. I like and have used PowerISO, which as of v4.6 is officially Windows 7-compatible. Do you have a USB flash drive?

As for doing it with an external hard drive, you have to partition your 2nd hard drive. If you only have one volume right now, just shrink it, and create a 2nd partition, the size of which will depend on the size of your hard drive and what you're comfortable with. I suggest you make one with at least 30GB of space, so you'll have room for applications.

Follow the iso guide, then do this as stated in the op:

"Note: If you need a language other than English, download the correct version above, and then use the language packs in this link to install your language after you install Windows 7:

OK, so I downloaded the ISO method, and I have a problem. It doesn't allow me to choice the OS version I want. It automatically directs me to WIn7 Home Premium. I downloaded that program to delete the ef. file, and I run it, and it says "removed successfuly", but I dunno why, I dont get a choice, just Home Premium automatically.
    What am I missing?

What key are you using? The ISO should direct itself to the Edition that the key belongs to. If you enter a Home Premium key, it'll install Home Premium.

I thought that I would post this since I couldn't find any reference to it here.

I have a spare 7 Home license that I wanted to use on my son's new Macbook via Bootcamp. I was having a lot of trouble getting a bootable disc, as the first 2 tries gave me the following errror:

"A required cd/dvd device driver is missing, please insert the disk with this driver to continue the install"

After some searching on Apple's forums, I came across a reference to this utility available through the MS store:

    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

I was able to get a good burn & a good bootable disc using that. Just FYI.

Yea, I remember. That's great. Would you say that Windows 7 runs equally as well on a MacBook vs. a PC?

Tomorrow (Tuesday) we're expected to find out what the new MacBook models will entail. Let's see if we'll get IPS panels. ;)

Can one Windows 7 bootable USB drive stick be used with 2 separate PCs (with Windows 7 OS) if I have two Windows 7 keys?

Or must I create a separate Windows 7 bootable USB drive stick for each PC?

    Thanks.

Same as southcamp8 mentioned before, even after removing the ef file, the setup did not allow me to chose what win version to install. It directed me automatically to Home Premium (x64) - I used the iso method. Not a biggie for me since that's what my license is for, but just wanted to mention it.

Odd, I used the ISO method and booted from the burned ISO; after that, when I entered my key it automatically registered as Windows 7 Pro.

Hey guys I'm having a problem activating with a clean install I did.

I have windows 7 pro preinstalled. I performed a clean install after downloading it here. I entered in the product key in the initial install and I had no problems.

However a couple of days later it wants me to activate windows. Unfortunately it says "the windows 7 professional product key you typed is invalid for activation". I tried calling the number and registering it online after entering in the 54 digit code but it said I had reached the limits for how many times the product can be activated.

I got it from the bottom of my laptop.

EDIT: It's fixed. Phone activation locked me out for probably 3 days after I accidentally answered 2 instead of 1 to the 2nd question. The questions are regarding whether you used this code on another computer or something like that. Tried it today, entered the code, got asked the questions again answered 1 to both and got a 46 digit code back.

So if you answer incorrectly they'll lock you out for a while and you won't be asked those questions again you'll just get the "your code has exceeded the limit of activations" message.

    Hello bankergolfer,

Have you tried installing Windows 7 with USB Flash Drive? I use USB flash drives all the time for OS install it works perfectly - lot faster and no DVDs to get scratched and damaged! :)

You can download the USB tool for free and copy your Windows 7 ISO to the USB. Complete instructions can be found here:

    http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool

Would it cost the same ($199) to install this and call them to activate it compared to buying a vanilla copy of 7?

EDIT: Found a cheap It's Not Cheating method and got it at half price :D

I have downloaded through the ISO version and used imgburner to make a dvd with the 64-bit Windows 7. When I try to boot my computer and then tell it to boot from disc i eventually get to a screen that asks me to "Install Now". When I do that it will take a few minutes and then comes to a screen that says it is looking for the drivers. I have clicked browse to find the D drive, which is where the dvd is, and the error continues. Is there a way to fix this?

Nope. The keys are keyed to specific versions, and a DVD can have the install files for all versions (since every version is just missing some features in ultimate).

Has anyone actually been able to get any of the x64 OS'? Everytime it gets over 60% or so it goes from hundred of kilobytes to doulbe figure bytes! I've tried it at work, at home and at my parents; all on different systems and ISPs so it's not an issue on my end I don't think.

Can't get the OS' or the '1' box file (the largest). I'm using 'downthem all' firefox download manager.

I've tried Firefox, IE and Chrome. If I don't use a download manager then I get a couple KB file that thinks the downloads complete and if I do use a manager, soon as I get past halfway or so it starts to crawl at 50 or so 'bytes' a second.

Even tried a standalone download manager and have had the same issue. When did you download them fine? Wondering if there could be a problem that's more recent.

I can get Windows 7 CDs from elsewhere but want to make sure I'm getting the real thing, and only the real thing.
