I have 32-bit vista ultimate OEM on my laptop. I bought upgrade key for 32-bit Win 7 ultimate. Can I use this key for installing full win 7 64-bit professional? My laptop is eligible for 64-bit.

You should be able and allowed to. Does the upgrade says 32bit ONLY?!
    Give it a try it.

Are there any MD5 or SHA1 codes officially from Microsoft so we can verify these downloads?

removing the ei.cfg with the tool did nothing for my iso. I downloaded 64x w7 pro english, in hopes that I could use my boot drive for a pro install on one laptop and home premium on another, but it's just installing pro for me, no options.

For some reason the ei.cfg removal tool doesn't seem to work with the Windows 7 SP1 ISO. If you manually delete or rename the ei.cfg file to something like ei.org you will get a menu to select what version of Windows you want to install during boot.

This works especially well if you create a USB flash drive from the ISO to perform the install then delete the ei.cfg file manually from the drive.

I didn't know about this issue because I always delete it manually. Please tell me if you find a working tool for SP1 and I'll add it.

Okay, so I just used DownThemAll to download the Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium x64 file. I took the SHA1 code from this site (6C9058389C1E2E5122B7C933275F963EDF1C07B9) and copied it into the appropriate DownThemAll field box before I started the download process. After the download finished it went through a quick verifying process and a red plus sign appeared over the green check mark. Does this mean that the file downloaded properly and that it matches the SHA1 information?

Also, I have read about having to delete some /sources/ei.cfg file before burning the ISO onto a disc, but is this really necessary since I downloaded the exact version I want (Home Premium, x64, English)?

No, it's all about convenience, if you ever want to install any other version.
I hope you know how to burn a Windows ISO, knowing that it will be bootable. It's easier to use a USB drive.
Next time you need it, it's probably outdated anyway, when SP2 is the latest version.

LOL, I probably do not. The file downloaded to my computer as an ISO file, and then I simply burned that to a DVD-R by clicking on the ISO file. I do not see the files shown in this image from "How to create a Windows Vista / 7 installation disc (bootable) using ImgBurn" until I have burned the ISO onto the DVD-R, so I do not see how ImgBurn would come into play.

Also, believe it or not I do not have a USB that is bigger than 1GB.

I'm confused as to the point of these. Don't you get the software on a CD or as a digital download when you buy it?

Ah, so I use that program to open the ISO on my computer to get the files, and then use ImageBurn to copy them to a DVD. Thanks :)

Well, I am going to be using it to do a clean install on a new laptop I am getting so I do not have all that bloatware.

Yes, but only if you buy a separate Windows 7 copy. If you buy a computer with Windows 7 you won't get a DVD in most cases, and the the recovery files you're offered to burn on DVD's are made specifially for your model or brand, and usually contains software that may not be needed.
Yes, but you should really try the Microsoft tool first, much easier to use.

I downloaded Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit ISO a few weeks ago. I removed the cfg file. I burned it using PowerArchiver Pro and installed it on a new hard drive on my old computer I gave to my grandmother. It installed and I had no problem activating it with my upgrade version product key.

    Hi.

Can i manually delete the cfg file, since the tool doesn't work with the SP1 ISOs. If so, how I can remove it?

The thing is, I need the danish x64 Home premium version, but I would have to download the professional danish version (since that's the only version in danish), and then remove cfg and choose the home premium version

The tool worked with the SP1 Pro 64-bit ISO.

It could be because you are using the Danish version. It works with the English version.

    Hej.

I haven't had the time to test the removal tool on SP1, but you can always try and see if it works.
Otherwise, if you copy it to a USB drive, you can delete the ei.cfg manually afterwards, since the USB drive isn't write protected.

For deleting the ei.cfg file use Poweriso then delete option and save it Poweriso will make a new ISO file.
To backup your activation use ABR with W7 support after restoring your installation use RUN %temp% and delete the ABR folder and your done.

Sounds like too much work :p

winisoutils - Windows ISO Disc Image Utilities
Does that with "one click". It only edits the ISO image, no need to rebuild.

Difference is that PowerISO is $29.95 and that editor software is free. Of course it can do more than just delete one file but I personally rather use free alternatives when they are available.

I just have to say I love this forum. I'm quite a noob but I was able to do a fresh install of W-7 using this guide with a bootable USB. Swapped out the HDD with a Samsung 830 and this machine flies!

    Thanks for the great guide!

Yep. Just some tricks after install needed. Read this: Clean Install Windows 7 with Upgrade Media

I like the registry edit method myself, I've used it couple of times and never had any issues.

Techically you still need to own the previous license to use an upgrade license.

Can someone confirm the size of the Win 7 Pro w/SP1 64-bit download -- initially it says 3.1GB however mine finished at around 2.1GB. Also, upon trying the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, I get the error message, "The selected file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again." Has anyone come across this?

    EDIT: Solution in post #87

your best (and the most fool-proof) bet is to compare the MD5 or SHA-1 checksums of the downloaded file with the one posted in the thread.

You guys are so smart (and useful lol)! Did all of these things (re-downloaded the file and verified the SHA1 value) and it now works beautifully! Never knew about checksums until now -- pretty cool. It is a bit curious that my first download attempt ended prematurely. Thanks guys!

An N version of Windows is one that doesn't by default include some programs like Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. You can try check it on Wikipedia.

You can use the key on the bottom of your laptop, but you might need to ring up Microsoft's automated phone number to get it activated.

I'm pretty sure the phone number will be displayed in Windows if you need to activate and yep it's totally automated. Alternatively, you could use ABR Beta: http://www.patchysan.net/images/thinkpad/ABR_17.zip.

Hey, I'm getting my new laptop soon.

Did the key on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop worked when you installed the Windows N version? Or did you actually called them to get it activated?

    Thanks a lot!

I grabbed the file "Professional x64 Swedish" (X17-59273.ISO) and removed the "ei.cfg" file(with software eicfg_removal_utility, it worked).
Burned the iso to a DVD.
When im installing i only have the English language to choose ?

And since im installing "Home Premium x64" i dont have the option to Change the Display Language ( under Category - Clock, Language, and Region/Region and Language/ Change display language, since its only enabled in Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise).

Any input on this would be helpful...

I have downloaded X17-59273.ISO, removed ei.cfg with the tool, and installed it in virtualbox.
Swedish language is the only alternative, not even English is there. I don't understand how you did it...

Did you perform a Custom/Advanced install (not Upgrade)?

I personally downloaded, and can confirm that the sha1 of the english home premium matches that of the MSDN file listed here.

I used and would recommend for windows using the Microsoft provided FCIV Tool, to check the sha1 vs the official microsoft discs.
