I have 32-bit vista ultimate OEM on my laptop. I bought upgrade key for 32-bit Win 7 ultimate. Can I use this key for installing full win 7 64-bit professional? My laptop is eligible for 64-bit.

Give it a try it. -
Upgrade says 32-bit only.

Are there any MD5 or SHA1 codes officially from Microsoft so we can verify these downloads?
thanks. -
I can't tell for sure if MSDN and Digitalriver have identical images, tho.

removing the ei.cfg with the tool did nothing for my iso. I downloaded 64x w7 pro english, in hopes that I could use my boot drive for a pro install on one laptop and home premium on another, but it's just installing pro for me, no options.
-
This works especially well if you create a USB flash drive from the ISO to perform the install then delete the ei.cfg file manually from the drive. -
I didn't know about this issue because I always delete it manually. Please tell me if you find a working tool for SP1 and I'll add it.

Okay, so I just used DownThemAll to download the Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium x64 file. I took the SHA1 code from this site (6C9058389C1E2E5122B7C933275F963EDF1C07B9) and copied it into the appropriate DownThemAll field box before I started the download process. After the download finished it went through a quick verifying process and a red plus sign appeared over the green check mark. Does this mean that the file downloaded properly and that it matches the SHA1 information?
Also, I have read about having to delete some /sources/ei.cfg file before burning the ISO onto a disc, but is this really necessary since I downloaded the exact version I want (Home Premium, x64, English)? -
I hope you know how to burn a Windows ISO, knowing that it will be bootable. It's easier to use a USB drive.
Next time you need it, it's probably outdated anyway, when SP2 is the latest version. -
Also, believe it or not I do not have a USB that is bigger than 1GB.
-
You need a program that's able to mount ISO files. Like this one.
This tool works with both USB drives and DVDs. -
I'm confused as to the point of these. Don't you get the software on a CD or as a digital download when you buy it?

I downloaded Windows 7 Pro SP1 64 bit ISO a few weeks ago. I removed the cfg file. I burned it using PowerArchiver Pro and installed it on a new hard drive on my old computer I gave to my grandmother. It installed and I had no problem activating it with my upgrade version product key.
-
Hi.
Can i manually delete the cfg file, since the tool doesn't work with the SP1 ISOs. If so, how I can remove it?
The thing is, I need the danish x64 Home premium version, but I would have to download the professional danish version (since that's the only version in danish), and then remove cfg and choose the home premium version -
The tool worked with the SP1 Pro 64-bit ISO.
It could be because you are using the Danish version. It works with the English version. -
I haven't had the time to test the removal tool on SP1, but you can always try and see if it works.
Otherwise, if you copy it to a USB drive, you can delete the ei.cfg manually afterwards, since the USB drive isn't write protected. -
Does the method described by the threadstarter also apply for Home Premium?
My Sammy NP-700Z5A-S05UK has that...
Tks
Barend -
Yes.
Download Dutch Professional, copy to USB drive using the MS tool, remove the /sources/ei.cfg file, and then install.
Remember to select Custom (Advanced) -
Thank you a lot for this thread it was exactly what I was looking for!
-
For deleting the ei.cfg file use Poweriso then delete option and save it Poweriso will make a new ISO file.
To backup your activation use ABR with W7 support after restoring your installation use RUN %temp% and delete the ABR folder and your done.

Great Job MATS -
winisoutils - Windows ISO Disc Image Utilities
Does that with "one click". It only edits the ISO image, no need to rebuild.
Difference is that PowerISO is $29.95 and that editor software is free. Of course it can do more than just delete one file but I personally rather use free alternatives when they are available. -

do you have MD5 or SHA1 checksums of any of the English language downloads?
EDIT: found them here.
-
You can find the SHA1 in the first link in the first post.

that link does not open in Firefox for me. i just added the SHA1 checksums to this thread for future reference. but thanks anyway
-
Inded, Firefox did not open that correctly but both IE9 and Chrome do as I just tested.
Conclusion: You need a better browser -
I just have to say I love this forum. I'm quite a noob but I was able to do a fresh install of W-7 using this guide with a bootable USB. Swapped out the HDD with a Samsung 830 and this machine flies!
Thanks for the great guide! -
Love the forum. Never saw an answer to "does this work w/upgrade key"?
-
It works with any key, AFAIK. So the answer is right there:
-
I like the registry edit method myself, I've used it couple of times and never had any issues.
Techically you still need to own the previous license to use an upgrade license. -
Can someone confirm the size of the Win 7 Pro w/SP1 64-bit download -- initially it says 3.1GB however mine finished at around 2.1GB. Also, upon trying the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool, I get the error message, "The selected file is not a valid ISO file. Please select a valid ISO file and try again." Has anyone come across this?
EDIT: Solution in post #87 -
something probably went wrong with your download. pretty sure my win7pro64bit was 3GB and it worked perfectly fine with the USB tool

your best (and the most fool-proof) bet is to compare the MD5 or SHA-1 checksums of the downloaded file with the one posted in the thread.
-
All SHA1 values are in this link.

Are these downloads for Windows 7 from Digital River.... the RETAIL version of Windows 7 or the OE version of Windows 7?
-
So I purchased a laptop and been meaning to do a fresh install but never came around to doing it, have been busy.
I was wondering whats an N-key?
Can I use the Windows 7 sticker key printed on the bottom of my laptop? -
An N version of Windows is one that doesn't by default include some programs like Windows Media Player and Internet Explorer. You can try check it on Wikipedia.
You can use the key on the bottom of your laptop, but you might need to ring up Microsoft's automated phone number to get it activated. -
And its automated so I don't have to talk to any annoying reps, right? -
-
-
Hey, I'm getting my new laptop soon.
Did the key on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop worked when you installed the Windows N version? Or did you actually called them to get it activated?
Thanks a lot!

I grabbed the file "Professional x64 Swedish" (X17-59273.ISO) and removed the "ei.cfg" file(with software eicfg_removal_utility, it worked).
Burned the iso to a DVD.
When im installing i only have the English language to choose ?
And since im installing "Home Premium x64" i dont have the option to Change the Display Language ( under Category - Clock, Language, and Region/Region and Language/ Change display language, since its only enabled in Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows 7 Enterprise).
Any input on this would be helpful... -
Hej jajjemen.
I'm using the same ISO and have no issues at all, right now I'm downloading the file and will get back to you if I can figure this out. -
Hej Mats,
Can you choose Swedish when you install or afterwards ? -
I deleted the excisting ISO file and downloaded a new one, removed ei.cfg, burned a new disc, installed and language is in Swedish.....
Dont know what could have been the reason, anyway a big thanks. -
I personally downloaded, and can confirm that the sha1 of the english home premium matches that of the MSDN file listed here.
I used and would recommend for windows using the Microsoft provided FCIV Tool, to check the sha1 vs the official microsoft discs.
