That's good to hear
An external gpu is basically hooking up a desktop gpu to a laptop using its expresscard slot and/or with mpcie slots (like for wifi cards). Windows 7 has pretty much made it plug and play too (usually anyways. I've had trouble with Bsods when I try to plug mine in with the machine on). That's the easiest way of looking at it.

Guess we got some killer notebooks folding. -
The only thing I got folding is a Asus g73jh with 920xm and amd 5870. I have a elitebook 8530p folding with the cpu only. The graphics card does not seem it start up. It worked some weeks ago but I think something happened when I upgraded the gpu drivers.
-
I normally uninstall the drivers in control panel 1st and then restart into safe mode and run Driversweeper a couple of times and then CC Cleaner to remove my GPU drivers.
Give that a go if you like and then see if you can install a fresh batch of GPU drivers and get your GPUs folding again.

bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
-
It's been a while since anyone posted the update, so here it is for the 02/07/12.
-
Hoping to make #9 in due time. Fat chance getting to #8 unless I build a folding rig, however.

-
bigtonyman Desktop Powa!!!
Once my 6990m gets here i should be getting more points and ill be ableto move up the chain quicker. Just need to get my hands on a 2920 now.
-
-
I'm hoping it'll have switchable high performance nvidia graphics, then I'll sell my eGPU set up. I don't game that much, but seeing as how I only had to pay $170 ($100 for 460, $40 for adapter and $30 for psu) to be able to max games on either my internal screen or an external one, I'd say it was worth it!

Team ranking: 827 of 209293
We might be breaking top 800 really soon
Also, reborn's nearing 3 million points

Some awesome folding going down! I need my M17x R2 to do a large WU unit again. I average more PPD doing the large ones than the small ones that are worth 300-400. The larger WU's are approximately 24 hrs but worth 8000pts. I need to gain some ground on TurboTalon
.
EDIT: We should be hitting 10 Million points as a team sometime later today or early tommorrow! Awesome! Thats a lot of points -
Just finished secure erasing, installing Windows and enabling the LPM fix.
If the SSD malfunctions now when i do a folding run then bye bye drive. >_>
Im gonna give it all to help us reach a team score of a 10 million. xD
Who would have known notebooks pack this much firepower. -
Yea, I'm definately impressed with what we've been able to accomplish. Definately awesome work.
Any chance that SSD is under warranty? I know I bought an intel drive off the forums from somone and when it died, I called intel and they had no issues about replacing it. Great customer service from them. -
So I have finally gotten around to installing F@H, and I *think* it is working??
See screenie.
I have to say, I am nervous about leaving my computer running unattended at full loads with all my clocks on
Would be nice to easily flick my GPU's to stock whilst folding.Attached Files:

-
But im not looking forward to going back to keeping the OS on my HDD. -
Awesome Douse! Welcome! Be sure to enter your User ID, and GET A PASSKEY! If you havn't already...
But definately keep an eye on temps. my CPU (stock) doesn't go over 80°C at full load for 100+hours and my GPUs never go over about 73°C. All my things are stock. So if you want, you can undervolt and run stock which should help. May also help stability as F@h is more intense then most benchmarks so it can easily lead to failed work units. So keep an eye on the log for the first few days.
From your screen shot it looks like things are running well. Do you have any overclocks? If so definately keep an eye on the log to see that work units are not failing as I metioned earlier, but otherwise things look good.
-
And its folding again.
I cleaned out the fans but temperatures only dropped by 5c but at least my fans are much more quiet.
Btw NBR is pushing it into the 799 league soon. -
Yeah my GPU's are at 780/950 but those temps seem pretty stable and I have my CPU clocks mildly overclocked at 19 across all cores.
I haven't done any tweaks or anything but I dont know if I need to?!? Both GPU's are at around 60% and my CPU is getting a good work out so do I assume it is working?
Should I enable bigadv WU? -
Welcome to the TEAM bud!
Thats pretty good stuff that you have mild OC's on the GPUs and CPU. Definitely keep an eye on the temps and overall folding stability though. As DR mentioned folding 24/7 close to 100% CPU and GPU load all the time can quickly make things run not so stable down the track when dealing with OC's. If it does continue to run stable then thats great though. I used to run my CPU and GPU's OC however I have to leave my notebooks for days at time without checking on them so it is really annoying if I came back and folding has died because of instability. So I just run everything at stock settings now and its working great.
Don't bother with enabling the bigadv. They recently changed the rate of which they wanted those WU's completed. They decided that they only wanted something like 8 physical cores or 16 physical cores working on them so that they could meet a specific deadline/timeframe for completion.
No worries though, having the passkey enabled will net you some bonus points after you have completed 10 SMP WU's. So hang in there while you get a lot of small WU's that look like they aren't worth much credits atm.
Cheers. -
I just joined, but I am having troubles figuring out how to enable my GPU. I followed the guide on the first page, but I only have one slot. When I try to add a GPU, when I hit "save", nothing happens.
-
Which client version do you recommend for a quad CPU server (no gpu)?
-
If everything I'm reading about the iPad3 is true, I'll probably pick one of those up next month (or whenever they show up). I had an iPad2, but returned it because 1) I had to pay some extra tuition from adding more hours and 2) I'm spoiled by my iP4S retina display, and decided I could wait for an iPad that had one as well.
Then I'll spend the summer working and pick up a new laptop in ~August. Hopefully the new stuff will be shipping and have some of the bugs out by then. I probably wont spend $3k on it like I did that Clevo, but I want something that's going to last me ~3 years and satisfy my mild gaming desires..
My problem is that I always want the latest stuff so I have an issue committing when I know something new is coming out in a few months. I need to start buying earlier, buddying up to a reseller (which I did. got ~34% off my Clevo when all was said and done lol), and selling when the new stuff comes out. Hopefully I'll have made enough of a deal that I recoup my $ and can buy the new toys!
Had to stop folding for a while to do homework. I've only got 4hrs left on my 5800pt gpu wu, so I'll have that by morningyou should be picking up some steam once you get that 6990m installed though! My cousin has an R3. He had an issue or two with it and dell was kinda jerkin him around. his was pretty stock with a 5870m and a 2820. When I got done with dell, however, they built him a brand new machine with raided 500gb hd's, a 6970m, blueray and extended his warranty another year lol. I'm not mean, I just have a way of getting what I want from them!
-
Cheers for the info! Well I have left it running over night and everything appears to be running stable and well. Before bed I pulled my CPU clocks back to 16x across all cores as this way it sits at 80C.
Video cards are holding well with the primary sitting around 70C and the second sitting around 73C.
As for errors, I assume that checking the logs and ticking 'Warnings & Errors' would show if there were problems caused by instability?
LOL the living room was noticeably warmer this morning. Little laptop packs quite the heating punch
Sorry if this stuff is covered in the original post.
EDIT:: Wow the 6990's are much better at this than the CPU! Is 60% util on the GPU's OK? What are other people getting? Can this be tweaked to use more? -
and welcome
-
Just as I left this morning my GPU WU's finished and the next ones were using the GPU's at 100%!
Now I am going to be wondering all day if my system is overheating
Need to set up some sort of RDP!!!! What do you guys recommend? -
A lot of peeps like to use Teamviewer to remote into their lappies.
Cheers. -
Cheers, I will have to set this up I think!
LOL at least if it gets too hot it will shutdown and I haven't set f@h to start with windows. This is what I keep telling myself
So I wont have any stats until my CPU has done 10 work units? Is that correct?
NEVERMIND! I am on the scores sheet! WOOOOOOO -
The 10 SMP WU's is when you have assigned a PASSKEY then after you have completed the 10 CPU SMP WU's from then on after that you are eligible for Bonus points.
You can see this when you check the base credits and the estimated credits.
There will be a difference there due to the bonus points you can get.
Check out this stats page. It updates every 3hrs.

10 million points!
Grand Score 10010441 -
Is it possible to see your current progress in real time?
-
As too456 mentioned, WE DID IT - 10 MILLION POINTS on the Stanford stats! Other sites should have updated scores shortly...fantastic job team!
reborn2003: it looks like you're just a few hundred points away from reaching the 3,000,000 point mark - congrats! Carry on with the folding and keep up the good work.
To celebrate our recent achievements in folding, the new header is now live on the first post! -
But I installed teamviewer on each of my folding laptops. I then installed teamviewer on my Driod phone (Samsung Captivate). Now when I go out of town for days at a time, I can monitor my system. I've even uninstalled/installed F@H while in the car headed back to Ohio. Set it up with a passkey and did all the configuring. I have it set to start at boot so if it BSOD's I can get it back to folding. Also if you install teamviewer, make sure that starts at boot as well. Just don't play with overclocking through teamviewer. I did this one friday and my system stayed on with the fans going frozen for 2.5 days lol.
. Gave it more of a professional look.
-
^^ I repped justinkw1!!!
I will install Teamviewer when I get home so I can do some remote monitoring! Yeeeeeeahhhhh
Glad to hear the GPU usage should vary, was stressing a bit about constant 100% util.,, -
Yea, I want 100% usage 100% of the time! lol max folding.
-
Thanks man!
Geeee............. 10 million already this is a crazy rate we're folding at ey.Amazing scenes! GO TEAM!
Cheers.
Yeh tell me about it. I want all my slots to be folding at 100% usage load 100% of the time too.
I can't wait to get some next GEN Nvidia GPUs.
Have you seen the credits some of the Nvidia GPUs get, its great!
Its almost like getting a Big WU. It takes quite a while to complete but they range like over 5k in credits. It's pretty awesome.
Cheers. -
Congratulations everyone.
Next milestone 20 million? -
Is it possible to limit the CPU usage to make way for my other applications?
Also is there a way to set a time schedule? -
As for time scheduler, your best bet would be to use Windows Task Scheduler to automatically start or kill the client since there's no built in scheduler function within F@H IIRC. -
Phew, just finished a massive three day project worth 1700 points. Happy to see the new one has an ETA of just 3 hours & 15 minutes.
-
Try this out. For your CPU, (SMP) add this slot option.
max-packet-size
small
This way you can quickly knock out the 10 work uints required. Once you have 10 done, remove the option. Then you will begin to recieve bonus points for your SMP work units. So now that 1700pt work unit can net you maybe 4000 points. The base points are fixed for a workunit, but the quicker a unit is sent back ahead of the dealine, the more bonus points you recieve.
Unfortunately there are no bonus points for GPU work units. -
-
-
Woooo next batch of GPU WU's completed. Means my laptop hasn't crashed
-
-
Happy with these temps! Seems like my whole day of panic at work was for nothing
Yah that sucks that GPUs aren't applicable for bonuses. Perhaps they will change this?
So whats the deal with the CPU sucking so hard. If you look at my pic the base credit is only 1722.00 but the estimated credit is 4765.88 and the time to completion is something like 3.5 days!!! !
So how is that calculated? Is there a way my CPU can perform better? All 8 cores are maxed out..Attached Files:
-
-
EDIT: Looks like my R2 has failed at some point. My 24hr point average has taken a sharp dive.Guess I'll get it back up and running when I get home in 3.5 hours.
-
Ok fair enough, it has been running for nearly 24 hours already so it seems accurate. Ah well.
