It could be that your MOBO just simply can't support 4Gb of RAM. Have your tried updating your BIOS?

I already found out that it's an issue with my MOBO, but thanks again, ThunderCat. I updated my BIOS before adding Vista. It's just my MOBO that's old, unfortunately. Running Vista x64 on 3GBs is not that bad at all, though.

No, Sir. I like it though, it runs Crysis pretty well. At medium settings I can get about 22-25fps

There really isn't any talk on here about the need for a antivirus on a 64bit OS. From what I read there isn't a need for one, is this true? If so I am yanking McAfee off my comp really quick.

You should yank McAfee off anyhow...I don't know about not needing one, but I'd tried Avast or Avira (I prefer Avira)...VERY light footprint, and I am able to keep my startup time sub 40s. With McAfee it took ages to load.

P.S. How on earth did you get a 3dMark score so high in Vista w/o a DDR3 card? Which driver you using and what is the OC?

Sorry to get off topic with my Q's, you can PM if you want Thunder

I've heard the same thing. I've heard that there have not yet been any viruses written for the 64-bit platform. Even with this being the case, I still have antivirus on my computer. I'm taking no chances.

Ok, I need all of you awesome people to help me. I need a really good (free) video converter. Basically trying to convert movies to mp4 so I can play them on my ipod touch. I already tried videora and had great success with it on XP but it seems not to work very well with vista 64. I converted the same movie 3 times and always got the same error message so I'm done with that. Any help would be awesome.

Just curious, is there any way to save settings for different wireless networks? The situation is that I bounce between my girlfriends house and my parents, I often bring my laptop wherever I go but setting up the static IP every time I switch wireless networks gets a little annoying. The reason I setup static IPs is for torrents and since my parents have faster internet than my g/fs house I like to DL stuff here but I spend most of my time at my g/fs apt. Any help or insight would be awesome.

This sounds like a job for a .bat file, or maybe even AutoHotkey...but I have very little experience with either. I'd google it.

This would be a decent find, let us know what you get.

Re antivirus, there is a 64 bit Business version of NOD32 :) love it :)

@ThunderCat69 just setup your wireless router right. I have it to assign a static IP by MAC :) It is called static DHCP :) So the router assigns my my ip everytime I log to the newtwork.

Hey all!!!! I elected to try a little something with Dell in order to get them to sell 64Bit systems and wrote an article at Dell Ideastorm.

I need to ask a little favour in return from all if I can which is to visit the site and show your support!

    The link is here:

    Thank you ahead.

No problem, Les. I hope this starts a movement with all manufacturers. HP seems to be slowly integrating 64-bit more and more. That's definitely a good thing.

Hi I installed Vista 64 Ultimate on my Dell m1530, but I can't seem to be able to get Service Pack 1 to show up on Windows Update.

I didn't install the audio driver yet as the vista 64 m1530 guide says that could cause SP1 to not show up.

I have installed the other drivers except the Dell Quick Set stuff.

I installed a driver from laptopvideo2go for my geforce 8600 but when I go to Windows Update, it shows me an optional update for the 8600. Is that what is keeping me from seeing SP1?

It seems that the reason Windows isn't letting me get SP1 is because of some driver conflict or something, right? Could it be something else?

TBH, you should install Vista with SP1 integrated in the DVD. Way less hassle and future problems

Hey JC, last time I did a clean install (month ago) I was unable to find a legit way to install with SP1 integrated w/o purchasing a DVD. Is there a way to slipstream SP1?

I seem to have heard that Vista made it harder to slipstream updates and such, as you could with XP.

Quick question guys. Going to be getting Vista 64x home premium soon.

Anyone have an issues playing games like COD4, Crysis, etc..

Might be a dumb question but I wasn't sure if those games are made to only play on 32 bit systems or what? Thanks

If you've never played Crysis, or seen the box, or read anything about it *ever*, you probably do not know that Crysis not only will run on Windows x64, it comes with a 64-bit executable that you can optionally use on that Windows x64 operating system.

As for COD4, a video is worth a thousand words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y38RQN2IgYA

Hi everybody. After spending almost a year with 32-bit Vista, I think I'm going to jump the gun to 64-bit and upgrade to 4 GB of RAM. I see no reason to stick with 32-bit and 2 GB when 64-bit seems to be so stable and functional. Once I make the switch (probably sometime this summer), I'd like to be a part of the NBR x64 team :D

Fade To Black I'll send you a PM about it...

EDIT: I'll probably put x64 on my desktop that I'm building, not my notebook.

If its a signed driver loading issue with a program, you might be able to use astiv.exe to bypass it. It did the trick for several programs

You read the description box, about the *8600GT*, right? Not exactly a super card.

The point is to show it works. On higher hardware, it would do better.

I just upgraded to x64...........not sure I'm going to keep it though. When I type it skips characters occasionally.........it doesn't seem to really agree with some of my games, like Crysis for instance............and I see no noticable improvements over 32 bit as I expected to see. I have 4gb of ram and since my video card shares ram I assumed that the system showing an additional mb of ram would translate into improved graphics performance. Don't know about 3dmark scores as I didn't run that program prior to the upgrade, but real world gaming experience the performance was better under x32. Also have an "unidentified device" in my device manager that Windows can't identify even when I let it search online. I'm less than impressed with x64.

Never seen this problem. If you have some special keyboard or input you may want to see if there's a driver you need or can update. My Saitek Eclipse keyboard had a driver update recently, tho it never had any problems even working as a generic HID device.
I've been trying to get the message out since 2006.. 64-bit computing does not give some magical performance increase to absolutely everything. In fact the point where 64-bit computing can show potential benefit has a pretty high starting point. It requires some serious processing to get the most out of it. Even a game like Crysis, which to a user may seem insanely power-hungry, is just scraping the surface of what 64-bit computing is made for. Did you try the specific 64-bit binary for Crysis?

Another misconception is that RAM somehow translates to speed. It doesn't. RAM is a container, a holder for information. If everything that needs to fit in RAM can fit, it's 100% efficient. If there's too much data to fit in RAM and it has to swap some of the data to hard disk or somewhere else, that's not 100% efficient. More RAM only helps maintain efficiency. Yeah there's OMG SUPER HIGH SPEED OVERKLOCKED ULTRA RAM but at the end of the day it is all about having enough, not about how fast it is.

As for your unknown device, I'd suggest getting the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. My Intel board has a "management engine" thing that would show as unknown until I got the driver for it. It doesn't even do anything.

I don't want people to think that I don't want to add them, but there have to be active members on the team. After I finish all the exams I have (Thursday next week) or this week-end, I will remove non-active members (I am thinking less than 500 posts as a rule or rare activity), but I will give people a chance to catch up.
I want this idea of a team to look serious and I guess everyone wants active members everywhere.
