Hey,
Since it looks your all up for an x64 team, I have a question for you guys
I would like to test out 64 bit, going to install it on a external 7200rpm harddrive.
Which one should I get xp 64 or vista 64.
My setup is the following
• 2.00 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 800MHz
• 15.4" WSXGA+ 1680x1050 - 6625WD
• NVIDIA Geforce 8600M GT 512 MB
• 2048MB (2x1024) DDR2 667/PC5300 SODIMM. Zepto
• 160GB 7200rpm SATA Harddisk Samsung
• 6 Cell Battery
• Intel Pro/Wireless 4965AGN
• SAMSUNG COMBO 6xx4w/6xx5WD/2xx5W
• Keyboard Znote 6x15W Black UK
• 1.3 Mega Pixel Camera
• Realtek HD Sound with support for 7.1 surround sound
And I want to test the OS for gaming, cpu intensive tasks such as video encoding, editing etc.
Currently I am on XP 32 bit, would I benefit from upgrading to either 64 bit os be it vista or xp??
Thanks for your help
-
Thanks JCMS, excellent info. Now that I am thinking of actually doing this for the frist time, I realize that I do not know as much as I thought/hoped. Will Office 2007 work? Will the drivers that came with my Dell for chipset, network, etc work? Will ANY software that is not specificallt 64 bit work? Because if not, then I am not so sure I have a reason to go 64 at this time
Thanks, Dave
-
most drivers can be found at the manufactures website under support/drivers
so my suggestion is to first download ALL x64 drivers before doing the install, that way your ready to go before you change over
i upgraded purely for fun to x64. and i love it -
excellent idea, thanks. Any thoughts on whether I will need a 64BIT version of MS Office? Dave
-
There is no specific x64 version. The normal one works fines.
-
32bits software will all work, except if they are drivers-related (like a CD/DVD drive emulator for exemple). Other than drivers-related software, I can't even think about any other software have an x64 version (except maybe some engineering tools + IE7 x64, wich features 256bit encryption rather than 128)
@blackbird: XP x64 has more drivers / software issues than Vista x64, you also need Windows Server 2003 security softwares (or are the 2007/8 versioon working on it?) for XP x64 while Vista x64 works normally with many 32bits one -
There are some x64 video encoding tools as well.
-
Thumbs up for Vista x64. I personally love it
-
OK, now I see. I think I will put trying it into my "computing fun queue". Thanks, Dave
-
i <B 64BIT VISTA!!!!
-
Hey guys!
Perfect thread for me as I am looking to buy a vostro 1500 with 4 GB RAMS (for CAD programs, photoshop, video editing) and want to use them all
Will I benefit from XP64?? The consultant at Dell was saying that the Vostro wasn't compatible with the 64 bit architecture (or she just did not want to sell me the 64 OS, anyways)
What do you guys think? -
I'm in.
-
I think the saying goes "She's on crack"...maybe she isn't, but my Vostro 1500 runs Vista x64 beautifully and I couldn't be MORE pleased with it...I just needs to gets me some more RAMzzzzz....and a 7200 RPM HD wouldn't hurt =D
-
Vista Premium 64 bit. It works with no problems. It is slightly more difficult to get some programs to work as they are not compatible yet, but I'm sure that will change sometime in the very near future. But my system/drivers are completely stable with no problems whatsoever.
-
What is the purpose of this club?
-
We really haven't established our mandate as of yet but I am going to bet its to help others and push the 64 Bit environment along.
WE need to create a chain, a hierarchy if you will... I will be the Sgt at Arms. lol -
Can I be the Dung Boy?
-
Count me in.
Went from 32 bit XP to 64 bit Vista Ultimate, without a hitch. Dont see any reason to go back to either xp or 32 bit -
If i had to guess, i would say that this group would probably help people find compatible software and drivers. A list of commonly used such programs would probably help a lot of people. For instance, can anyone find RM clock or something like that, that is compatible with x64. I have yet to come across such a program.
-
-
Hey guys, as far as RM Clock, here's a forum I've had my eyes on for a while. Supposedly you can get it going, but I was waiting for some positive feedback as to whether or not it would screw up your system...I've got my x64 goodness in tip top shape, I'd had to have to start from scratch.
See this post:

A list would be good. Let's see who's using.
-
Not using yet, still waiting on the windowsanytimeupgrade disc but if it counts at all my desktop is xp x64
-
Has anyone moved a Toshiba to X64? I just go a great deal on the U300 Satelite and am starting to seek drivers.
-
If it's new, it most likely has the x64 drivers, you might want to check at toshiba's website

s0ap, that's odd. Try this one, go back to first page:

A little 64 bit promo
crysis runs much faster on vista 64 bit compared to xp 32 bit -
Do all games perform as such and, if so,
then why would anybody choose XP over Vista 64Bit? -
But what's that got to do with this thread? -
ie Crysis and Far Cry 64
However other 32 bit games like cod4, the orange box all run superb on my vista 64 bit, same as they were running in XP if not better. That is after I had tweaked my vista instalation. Tweaked in the terms of stopping services and programs not needed on boot, applying the vista gaming patches and hotfixes and following your guide to disable TMM. Other then that the Aero interface is intact, no sacrifice done to the eye candy or what not.
Some numbers for fps and benchmark fanatics

above links discuss vista 32 vs vista 64 performance

Is there an x64 version of Unreal Tournament 2004? There is a patch for it, but is that it? How do I go towards making my x32 UT 2004 into a x64 UT2004?
-
if you want to make it 64 bit all you have to do is apply the patch

With 64 bit OS, you have to know that they support both 32 bit and 64 bit apps. For example AVG antivirus says it supports 64 and 32 bit, yet its a 32 bit app and hence when you run it its processes will be named avg...*32 but it runs absolutly great. -
Blackbird...
Did I see that correctly in your video? It appeared that XP was running the game at max 19FPS vise Vista 64bit at 45FPS. Is this correct? -
however this is not my video so i cant tell you if its fake or not
but from the benchmark results in the links i mentioned it does seem to justify
i also checked the settings he shows before launching the benchmark run and they are the same for both xp and vista, however do take note both xp and vista are running in dx 9 mode -
I have a really random question. Today I'm going to be purchasing a new HP laptop from officemax that comes with vista home premium. I'm going to install x64 vista on it. Is there a x64 home premium? and would I be able to use the same key, that's for the 32 bit home premium pre-loaded on it? I have the x64 vista disc from the microsoft feedback panel survey thing.
-
Wouldn't most of the 20 ga-ba-zi-trillion files that UT 2004 put on my hard-disk need a change as well?
-
lol
no they wont, just install the patch
its similar for what amd did for farcry, they just made a patch for it to run in 64 bit mode, since these games were built up on 32 bit they did not build a new one just for 64 bit just a patch.
this is also why these truly utilize and benefit from 64 bit as they were not designed for it during development unlike crysis was -

http://www.vistax64.com/general-discussion/123800-install-64bit-32bit-key-same-computer.html
in short yes you can, but only if your using one vista at a time ie unistall 32 bit and use 64 bit otherwise itl give you a key being used type of error
alternativly you can install and try 64 bit for 30 days if you like it you can activate it with your key if not then you just have to uninstall. -
cool thanx blackbird.
-
no probs, thats what this teams for
-
Considering I'm a devotee of Avon Barksdale and Ralphie Cifaretto, I humbly demand
I be the leader of the team.
"Up in this ***** here, I am what you might consider, an authority figure." - Avon Barksdale, to Marlo, in The Wire, Season 5 - Episode 2. -
Ah...leadership. Not a good question
.
-
That wasn't a question. It was more like a declaration.
BTW, In now forget when I last rebooted/shutdown my notebook. I go for 7-8 days or so non-stop, and reboot/shutdown only when I'm prompted to. Any downfalls? -
It depends, but I don't see any slowdowns.

Hey Guys I have some questions (5) on X64: Per line
1. Does Vostro 1500 have all the x64 drivers for XP/Vista?
2. Does all 32-bit application works fine on X64 OS?
3. What are some limitation of X64 when running 32-Bit apps?
4. Does X64 improve gaming performance if the game is CPU depended or the system has a weaker x64 capable processor?
5. Which do you recommend XP 64 bit or Vista 64 bit?
Thanks in advance. -
1. Yes, but it's up to you to find them here (Dell sub-forum), if they're not on Dell's site.
2. Theoretically all applications, except 16 bit ones and security software (and all software in fact) that require kernel hooking, such as old antiviruses, firewalls and such. x64 applications don't have this problem, obviously and new versions also work (even Norton if I'm not mistaken here). This will not be a problem for 99% of the people.
3. Except above none. This is by design though and can't be changed: Windows x64 requires x64 drivers (including firewalls, antiviruses and such).
4. Not really. I mean, you will not see a difference in most cases.
5. Vista x64.
According to many people here Vista x64 moves faster than it's x86 variant, but I can't attest to this, since I have never installed Vista x86. -
Can someone make a sticky that includes all games that run in 64 bit? (ie: Crysis, FarCry 64, etc), I've searched the net but the lists I found were outdated.. Thanks!
