wow...i was surfing through various sites..had about 20 tabs open.. suddenly i started noticing my comp is lagging especially the browser i.e. firefox 2.0.0.12
I hit CTRL+ SHIFT+esc & got a shock ... 1.8 GB Memory usage..
I closed FF immediately & the entire memory usage had a Free Fall without parachute .. 1.8 GB to 600 MB all coz of firefox

Right now Firefox is using 73mb so it must be your RC version windows, or get Firefox beta 3 on Tuesday.
-
-
I don't know but it's most likely windows' fault. If you are really bothered then use FF3 beta 3 that is coming out on Tuesday.
-
What is this phenomenon called where one browser takes 1 GB ?
K...i ll do a parallel install of FF B3... B2 had issues so i had removed it -
It's called Firefox needed RAM so it took it. What kind of answer are you looking for? You probably viewed a few youtubes or viewed a malformed page that sucked up all that memory, as long as you get it back what's the big deal?
-
Why so serious? i was just curious
(no youtube tabs btw..webpages with images were opened) -
He just answered your question though.
The "phenomenon" is simply called "The application needed more RAM, so it took it".
Now, it *might* have been a memory leak, if that's what you're asking. Or it might not. -
If you had one tab open and FireFox too up 1 Gb of memory then that's another story but 20 tab is not uncommon for FF to hog that much resources.
I used to came across this page with tons of links, video and images all on ONE page, you can have just one windows of Firefox running with 1 tab for that website and it eats up 1 gig of memory by itself. ofc, I didn't tweak firefox's memory setting like everyone who care about FF's memory issues did.
Oh,ofc, the page went down about a week after I discovered it, I am sure you know why....
-
Firefox is made by amateurs, that's the problem. They definitely have a quality control issue. If a program needs the memory and after 10 seconds it doesn't need it anymore then it should release it.
Anyway, this doesn't happen with other browsers too. The fact of the matter is that Firefox doesn't release the memory back. Sure, you can always complain on their forums, but I bet they woun't fix it. It eats all RAM by design. You can make it release RAM by activating some Windows only feature (it frees up RAM on minimize). -
Let me guess, you use Opera? Bias opinion much? If you seriously think it's made by amatures then fine, but unless you have proof Mozilla is made up of a couple of 10 year olds who copy and paste code don't spread your ideas here.
-
No, I use Firefox. What bugged me the most about it recently was:
1. When I press CTRL + T the new tab isn't created. I have to right click and do it. It happens, but not all the time.
2. The text doesn't show up in the quick reply box, even though I write it there (no faulty keyboard). Also, it happens sometimes. Oh yeah, a few times on YouTube it wouldn't do anything when I pressed backspace, also wouldn't write there.
3. It closes when it tries to load a specific Java plug-in (BMW page).
4. It takes a ton of RAM, even though it can release it (having only one tab open at times, and yet I see more than 100MB of RAM usage with no flash and other bull****).
5. It has problems with the rendering engine (some pages do not display right).
6. It's butt ugly by default.
I can write more things that annoy me, but right now I can't remember all of them.
PS: I just had to close it to open finish editing this post and then re-open it and pasting the text. And it's slow with scripts. -
1. You aren't pressing it right.
2. Never had this problem.
3. Never had any problems with java.
4. If you really need the ram switch to Opera.
5. Either get Opera or wait until FF3 comes out.
6. Who cares, you can skin it if you don't like it. -
1. Right...
2. It doesn't happen often. Rarely I might add.
3. Me neither. It happens only on BMW's site from what I can tell. Not even reinstalling helps. Yet it works with Internet Explorer and Opera.
4. No, I just tweak it.
5. Yeah, again, it doesn't bother me to go fast though
.
6. Yes, that's the good part. The skins & extensions. -
From what i can see, why are you complaining? You like FF but you like to complain about problems that either don't exist or are being fixed. If you don't want your web browser made by "amatures" then use Opera or IE if FF gives you all these problems. If you think it's a crap browser don't use it. If you like it go a head and use it, no one is forcing you to use it.

usapatriot Notebook Nobel Laureate
Yup, FF uses up quite a bit of RAM, right now I am at 70mb with two tabs open.
Still love it though. -
Why so defensive about firefox? You sound like one of the mac people in the forums who refuse to believe their OS has flaws.
-
I'm not defensive, just stating the obvious. I've told him many times that he can switch to Opera or IE if he wants. I know it has flaws but if he really thinks it's a crap browser he should switch. using software you hate isn't good.
-
Calvin what the hell is wrong with saying something is buggy or doesn't work well? Your reply was disappointing.
It has problems, it's made by amateurs and yet I use it because it's the fastest browser (with Firefox). That's what matters to me. It's not great by default, it sucks like hell, but with a few extensions it makes my browsing more comfortable. For instance, I like an online bookmarks add-on, a GMail manager (I have two accounts) and I want it to be fast.
My problems to exist, I'm not the only one here. If it's what I use and have problems with it, so be it. -
The biggest problem i have with what you're saying is that "it's made by amatures". Have proof? I'm just stating the obvious, no bias. If you hate it, don't use it. If you like it, but are having problems use the FF3 beta 3 coming out on Tuesday or switch to Opera or IE for the time being. What's wrong with that?
-
No, just thinking out loud. I have no real proof that they're amateurs, but the bugs make me think so.
Anyway, I can't use any beta, as some extensions don't work yet and I'm not sure if I can make them work. Anyway, I think there must be a way to allow any non Firefox 3 compliant extension to work. -
Well then add "IMO" when you say "FF is made by amatures" because that annoys the many people who use it, and the people who make it. The way you say it makes you seem like some computer noob who doesn't like a couple of things about it so he says it's made by "amatures". As far as using FF3 beta 3, you can just use the nightly tester tools to use your addons, or just use something more "stable" like Opera or IE.
-
Look, I'm not saying I don't like it's good parts, but there are some that annoy me. And I'm not a noob, I know that because of my bugs I don't have to call them amateurs, but it's not like it's just me. Anyway, stop recommending me different browsers, as I know they exist and can use them, but just don't feel like losing some extensions.
-
If FF is made by amateurs, then what is IE made by?
-
Idiots.
PS: Damn 10 characters... -
If you're not a noob and don't want to switch to another browser then why not report the bugs you're having as long as they aren't being fixed by FF3? That's what i would do instead of making complaints that make me sound like a noob on a laptop forum.
-
How should I know if they are fixed or not if I can't run the extensions I need on it?
-
The bugzilla repository, and extensions aren't Mozilla's problem, but they'll remove extensions that don't comply with 3.0 by the end of the year. If you really wanted those problems solved you would do all in your power to make it known to Mozilla for fixing instead of complaining here is all i'm saying.
-
Yeah, whatever. I'm not complaining about them, this was the first time I said about them here or anywhere else. I don't have enough time to play around with Mozilla's fanboys there to get those bugs fixed. Anyway, I might give it a shot, why not, but right now I have better things to do. I'll report them, but I guess I will have to face posts like yours (example: This never happened to me; probably they will add the "...so it's not a bug" thing, which annoys me). I have enough experience with beta products, testing and other stuff to know that what is usually just a rare problem it doesn't get fixed 90% of the time.
-
Now see here, that makes you sound like an upset noob. You want to say that the problem will never get fixed by "fanboys" and call the person who is trying to help you a "fanboy". Your comments in this thread have been nothing but making you sound like a noob who doesn't like Mozilla products but knows for sure it's better than the others so he has to use it. Call me wrong if you think otherwise but this is how you come off to me from your posts here.
-
I'm not saying that. You don't get the point. Why bother with me? Why trying to convince me that I woun't get that answer? I've dealt with quite a few developers and I know how they generally think, so you're not helping me at all nor this discussion. Don't defend Firefox just because you use it.
-
I've come here to help others in return for the help i receive, that's why i try, even though you're being difficult. If i'm not getting the point, then why not explain it to me simply?
If you had taken note i wasn't defending Firefox at all. If you can show me where in my posts where i sound like a fanboy then i won't say anything if you call me a fanboy but if you read the entire post i don't seem like a fanboy at all. -
Why would you draw Mac folks into this? And, btw, OSX has no flaws!
-
No, I wasn't saying you're a fanboy. You don't really sound like one, so I have no reason to think otherwise. If I have implied so you must of misunderstood.
I'm difficult because I have used to play with programs and used to report something and used to get credit for what I did and used to like it. Now I got bored because my problems weren't always fixed, just because they weren't always general problems.
OS X is perfect indeed. (It didn't have that bug where when transferring files from one partition to another you could of just lose them)
Not a OS X discussion, but their developers are different. No one really relies on Apple releasing something, except the few % of people using MacOS (no offense here, I don't want to start a discussion) -
OSX has flaws, people just have yet to find them because the OSX population is roughly less than 10%.
Wait nvm, heres a flaw; its overpriced. -
OS X is not overpriced. Vista Ultimate is. But yes, it has flaws (I call them bugs and security issues).
-
Even if you're problems don't get addressed all the time, as an end user you'd want to see it fixed no matter what. Even if you have to ask someone like PCMag to say that FF devs are ignoring bugs.
Also, guys, this isn't the Mac Forum. Stop talking about Macs, there doesn't need to be a flame war here. -
I am going to do something about it. I always do something, but now is not a great time for me.
-
Please don't bring Macs and Mac OS X into this discussion. It is not related to the current issue, and is bound to start a flame war.
-
Come on, edit the posts if you want to. It was a stupid subject anyways.
-
Be sure not to forget.
-
For Mac Fanboys: Apple Safari on Windows
For FF haters: Opera
For N00bs: IE7
For the ones who think different: Firefox
For me: All.. I have 6 browsers installed on my comp.
wow!
Memory leak is what i wanted to know more about...but here u guys started a an argument which is taking us nowhere...
Can some of you especially Calvin.. pls enlighten me on Memory leaks -
the memory leak for Firefox will not be fixed until 3.0 (from Mozilla sources)
In the meantime, just learn to close the browser when you are not using it to prevent the leak. -
Or minimize it and have that trim on minimize thing enabled. It helps.
-
You could try this Firefox v3 RC3
Code:ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/nightly/3.0b3-candidates/rc3/firefox-3.0b3.en-US.win32.installer.exe
-
Whenever I have say, 50+ tabs open, and most of them are BIG images (like when I was viewing ALL the Wikipedia 2007 pictures of the year), FF just owns my ram and hogs everything.
BUT that doesn't surprise me! And really, how often do you have 50 tabs open? Be more organized!
Sometimes FF will use up a few hundred MB and won't give it up unless I close the browser, but with 2GB of ram I've only ever had a problem like...twice. Ever.
Although I do run a RAM monitor so I can see in my system tray what's left
-
The Memory leak is usually caused by the feature that stores all the pages you view in memory so if you need to go back, you can go back faster instead of loading them again. Or it could just be an extension. In any case it's fixed in FF3.
Thanks for the link, i'm gonna try it out. -
Firefox does have some memory issues, but, aside from seeing that big number in the Task Manager, I have no "real life" problems [like computer slowing down or whatnot] with it. It's worked flawlessly for me.
Highest I've seen from my experience was around 250++ MB. A bit annoying is how Firefox memory usage never seems to go down. Let's say I had 20 tabs open, 4 of them YouTube. Then I close all but one of them, let's say this forum page. Still, memory usage doesn't go down at all. But, like I said, aside from that 'memory usage' number, the problem doesn't seem to slow down my computer. -
Just wait until KDE comes to Windows, then Konqueror will pwn all other browsers!
(Wow, at 19 I can't believe I just said that word) -
Are you kidding or do you actually believe it'll happen?
Omg Firefox on Fire ..1 GB memory!
