Take a look at the Linux subforum; developers are working on porting KDE libraries to Windows.

Just what kinds of images were you looking at? :p

If you want to try it, those .xpi extension files are actually .zip files, so you can rename it to a zip file and extract everything inside. Look for a "install.rdf" file, open it in Notepad or WordPad. Find lines like these:
    Change
    to something like
Save it, recompress everything back into a .zip, rename to .xpi, and you should be able to install the extension.

No guarantee it will work though and it might make Firefox crash severely, and Firefox might become really depressed and never talk to you again. Don't try this at home. Try it on your roommate's computer.

all good replies have been made, just adding my 2 cents to OP, and some recaps based on 2.0.0.xx:
. FF runaway memory should not be there even with ur 50+tabs. So i recommended that u reviewed ur environment for other potential issues
. FF does release memory if tabs were closed, for some posters that experienced otherwise, please share the situations when this occurred (sites visited ...)
. for FF3 betas and Minefield, nightly tester tool is great to make ur extensions compatible to ANY versions of FF, this was one of the smartest move of the mozilla community to get more willing testers of new versions/builds. The hacking/tweaking of renaming extensions (compressing/decompressing) is not (personally) recommended, one is stepping outside of the FF zone to force extensions to install. Personally, if any extensions that cannot be installed via the automation or nightly tester tools r off-limit in my comp.
. Linux users gonna love the newest FF3 with its blending in OS-specific skins and all
. running FF3 and FF2 in parallel should not make any impacts or side-effects on any comps. I would recommend a reinstall of both should this happened and accepted the default setup at installation prompt. Since over 10 days, Minefield builds started to branch out in the area of bookmarks. Much cleaner i believe. So one might see a bit of constrast here.

    cheers ...

It was a rare event...1.2 GB RAM was used by FF alone..the webpages i had opened were weird/unusual.... some Islamic Text was filled up on the webpages so i cudnt even decrypt. ..

interesting, long time ago, on the asiatic pages, with asiatic characters, firefox would bog down as well

u might want to submit this observation/experience with the mozilla community. But i can tell u this much, at least FF let u see the pages, try opening a chinese site with Opera, it would either choke or crashes ur comp

    thx for expanding ur experience

    cheers ...

I switched from Opera 9.25 to FF 2.0.0.12 two days ago because Opera freezed for 4-5 seconds every 8-10 minutes. It was so annoying and I decided to give FF a second chance. Until now it works better than Opera and it takes less memory to run. I hope it runs smooth all the way.

It's FireFox's fault. Damn near everybody has experience the infamous memory leak.

FF3 does seem to fix this, as I been using for months now. But most add-ons are not compatible yet with 3. At least all the ones I use.

I really think you should just pull all the memory chips out of your PC and put them in a drawer somewhere as it is pretty clear you do not want to use them.

oh well ... FF 2.0.0.12 is MUCH more laggy than FF 2.0.0.11

It doesnt respond for a minute if u open 2 tabs under a second which i used to do comfortably on FF 2.0.0.11

Yeah, I was on another forum where a guy's ~2GB RAM was used up by Firefox, as he was running ~43 tabs including youtube, flash games and the like.
Firefox is great, but it's still popular for it's memory leaks, which were to be fixed in the "next release" at the time I read that guy's post, maybe it's already fixed now in the latest version.

    Currently using Firefox 2.0.0.12

that was exactly what i said, some pages with "funny" characters (non-roman) had the tendency to kill browsers

it would be interesting to see how this comparing to other browsers on the same comp. I just could never get ff2.0.0.12 on my beat up emachines to get up that high (40 tabs, one cnn news stream, 1 youtube, NO game)

there r loads of articles out there to assist serious web surfers to "manage" FF memory usage

the latest/newest/badest FF still has a way to go BEFORE it can be really "fixing/containing" memory "leakage". The extension/add.on developers have a way to go to conform to the new architecture to get this to work together.

And yes, i was saying that biggest memory leakage (& security) culprits are extensions/add.ons - part of being open source i guess.

    cheers ...

Thanks guys. Got it too disable compatibility check and install. But most of the add-ons I use still doesn't work or have problems. :(

I'm just going to go back to FF2 until FF3 has better add-on compatibility.

Think of it this way. If you have a buggy waffle maker, and you put a waffle in it and the waffle burns, what caused it?

    Waffle=Firefox
Waffle maker= RC version of SP1

It's been changed in SP1, now it's less aggressive. But it was just an analogy.

the bug reporting add-on is called Bugzilla i think

And read my article if your firefox is giving problems...
mine was a rare event so i am going through 'about:config' to ensure that all settings are appropriate

Opera 9.25 probably would no get that high in memory usage, but then it would just crashed the minute it could not get enough ram to "move about" - u got my drift, "i rather die than accept that someone else was right" attitude of Opera :D

at least, FF still let the users see ALL pages.

btw, just wanted to qualify ur "qualified" input to the OP concern - use Opera but stay away from Opera 9.5; this Opera version is very unhealthful to anyone's comp, especially for the "blinding" fanboysssssss

I have a useless question for you regarding Java: why does Firefox closes every time whenever I visit a certain page (BMW Italy, car configurator, so nothing weird there)? It does it with 2.0.0.12 and 3 beta 3 and with the previous versions.

I tried even in safe mode and with all extensions disabled, but Java doesn't want to work here. I'm starting to think that the problem lies elsewhere.
PS: I don't even have UAC enabled, so Firefox is always run as administrator.

Yes, I've tried, but the problem still persists even with a different OS. I'm gonna try it in VMware (probably not now, since I don't have an older Windows image).
This is the link where it closes. The problem persists with other flash sites too, but not in IE.

The page works fine on my school's firefox, so it must be the Java itself. Have you try reinstalling the java pack? here's the link just in case:

Make sure Firefox is close when you do the update/install.

Does anyone know what might have happened to my browser? Out of the sudden, it doesn't open the sub-menus under "Quick Links" tab anymore, here on the forum. You know, the sub-menu with all the links "Mark forums read", "Subscribed threads" etc. I didn't do anything to the browser. I have 2.0.0.12

Later edit: and on some other forums, images are not loading.

was this part of the "out of the sudden" as well?

. got a restore point? use it
