Well FF3 speed dial is indeed quit nice too... Took the wrong add-on one at the first time.![]()
Now it is difficult to choose between FF3 and Opera, but the problem with opera is that it has serious problems with some sites.

. mask the browser (O) identification as Firefox, or
. identify the browser (O) identification as Firefox
. both of these flags can be accessed from Tools->Quick References (F12)->Edit Site Preference->Network Tab
. or back to O9.27
then try again
cheers ... -
Thanks for the tip, but it seems to be a Adobe Flash issue because I am not able to click e.g. on pages with a Live Ticker...
-
got a link for me to try?
if it works before under 9.27, then it is likely that there is a masking to trick it, so far the success rate is about 85-90%, good enough to be used as a day-to-day browser.
O 9.5 has done lots of these modifications, FAQ is just not up to speed yet - so, there is always a work around

I have Opera on my desktop and it works fine. However I just DL'ed it on my laptop and everytime I load it and try to go to any website, its blank...anyone know how to fix this?
-
try clearing ur cache, under tools->delete private areas, and then restart the browser
cheers ... -
I haven't tried Opera since 9.27 but I might give 9.5 a whirl. I'll post my thoughts on it here if I decide to try it.
-
I just tried out Opera 9.5 and i have to say I'm probably never going to use Opera and enjoy it. The new GUI is pretty ridiculous to me, it wastes a lot of screen real estate for no good reason, when switching tabs it felt sluggish (okay, so it was only 1 second, still very slow compared to Firefox's split second) it crashed my GUI (it became un-responsive and i had to restart my computer), it also doesn't feel like an extension of my system (like with Firefox's new OS based integration themes) it just felt like a nice big 'ol brick for a browser. I honestly don't care about memory usage so this browser is useless to me. For anyone who feels i am bashing Opera this is just my personal opinion/experience so don't turn this into a flame war.
-
Yea, I feel the same way too, way too much usage for tabs.
I want them in separate rows dammit, cannot read which tab is which.
Also, I want an autocomplete feature grrrr. -
Autocomplete, how?
-
INEEDMONEY Homicidal Teddy Bear
You can put tabs on seperate rows in FF?
I can't tell a difference in the speed of switching between tabs in FF and Opera...
The lack of an autocomplete feature really bothers me too (this is my biggest issue) grr....
Screen real estate...yeah you have a lil less in Opera. I think the difference is a lil less than the height of the "post quick reply" button. If I zoom out to 95% its about the same amount -
Arg, what were they thinking with the new theme? Ok, Opera looked like something from the 80s but now it's almost unusable due to the tiny close tab button.. I also keep hitting the stupid new tab button when I'm trying to close a tab because that's where all other browsers (and Opera used to) have close tab button..
-
Other keyboard shortcuts -
yeah, ctrl-w and mouse gestures is what I usually use but I still use the close/new tab buttons enough to be annoyed by the change.

watch out for:
. the site might not be accessible, rumor was that Opera blocked this out to force the use of the new skin. I was lucky to get it
. if that happens, scroll down some posts, there will be other links

http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/2008/04/01/acid-3-opera-first-to-106
and quoting "....Opera's Chief Web Opener David Storey, tells us he is thrilled that the race for points has broken the psychological barrier of 100/100, crossing his fingers that even imaginary numbers might be within the reach of Opera and WebKit developers now fighting for the lead in Web standards compliance." ...

and this was real, no joke ... wondering if O devs were/are really giving a "flying ****"

O devs are active in this forum and would answer direct, so one can hear it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak

It is like arguing with a Mac fanboy about his "unbiased" review of a Windows based PC here! -
is Opera not competing with other browsers ON a Mac platform as well?
cheers ... -
I gave an analogy!

Click here for spell checking in Opera.
-
Next go to the left panel and select Windows
Now look at that, all your tabs a nicely displayed on the left. This menu even keeps track of other windows and its tabs as well. -
-
Select tab bar by clicking on it, set "Wrapping" to "Wrap to multiple lines." It's set to "no wrapping" by default. -
I like the new version. It can play CNET's video correctly now. Love the black theme. And it does seem like it loads pages faster.
-
A neat Opera trick -
If you scroll down with Space (the space bar button), when you reach the bottom of the page, Opera will automatically go to the next page.
Like, if you're reading a thread on some forum, or surfing through Google search, and you scroll down with Space Bar, when Opera reaches the end of the page and you press the Space Bar again, it will go to the next page (like from Page 1 to Page 2).
Try it! -
paper_wastage Beat this 7x7x7 Cube
i have been using Opera since 2005 when they went free, v8.5
i know that a lot of websites dont exactly work correctly in Opera, but they've improved on them, either thru a customized user.js, or a new update
i feel that Opera's faster, smaller footprint, more features built-in(the wonderful mouse gestures, speed dial, bittorrent/download manager, notes panel, trashcan, restores tab history no matter what happens[comp BSOD/power outage], page zoom(been out a long time b/f FF/IE), full-keyboard mode available(when my mouse's battery goes out and i need to recharge)....)
true that Opera doesnt have a lot of extensions(this is FF's ballpark), but Opera runs out of the box, on any (slow or fast) machine
PS> if u want a secure portable browser, check Opera Portable, its a 5mb executable of the whole Opera browser, deletes all traces of itself from the system when closed... -
i gave it a try. seems pretty fast. didnt find many things wrong with it. i dont like the final look they went with, pretty ugly IMO. the way it looked during the beta was much better. i know you can change skins etc.. just cant see why they would use that as the final.

Only suggestion left is to remove (clear it out good) and reinstall O9.5 again and see
cheers ... -
Side (personal) notes:
. whilst it is cool and neat, it takes quite a resource hit on some systems due to "pages preloading"
. if the next page happens to have loads of pics and forms, it would many times hang or crash - confirmed this in Safari Mac. Trick is that one must always set the cookies readily to be accepted - defeating the purpose of privacy, in many cases
cheers ... -
I don't know about Safari having it or not, but it has been working perfectly fine for me ever since I got to know about it. And I don't think it preloads a page.
It's just like a Mouse Gesture, sort of, maybe a Keyboard Gesture, for Fast Forward.

Is there any way to make them into separate rows, like 15tabs a row or something?
And thanks for the spell check. -
-
God damn, that was the one!
Thanks dude, you made my day.
Although now I have like 5 rows of tabs -
Silas - Making days since December 23, 1985!
-
Lol.
After 6000 posts, you'd think I would know how to make the tabs into rows -
Nope, but i do expect you to know how to post.
-
Hmm, now where did I go wrong with posting?
-
Wow I really like the look and feel of Opera 9.5 and it's come a long way.
I love the panels on the left side and the very modern and clean look of the browser as well as Speed Dial which is my favorite. So what's still missing? They need to allow you to put bookmarks on the Toolbar like Firefox. Scrolling thru to find your way to the link you want is an uncessary chore and a pain in the tush. The browser still isn't as intuitive as Firefox as you have to hunt and peck to find what you're looking for.
Still no spell check.
It's a very fas browser even in Vista.
p.s. It also handles annoying pop-ups better than Firefox so that's another plus. -
-
Yes like that. How do you get Opera like that? I tried everything I could think of.
eidt: I think I got it. I added it to the Personal Bar then enabled it in the Appearance menu.
Opera 9.5 ? out now
