I don't think that's what he is talking about, I think he means auto-*UPDATE*, not upgrade.

The GWX upgrade has been pulled from Windows 7/8 and is no more.

He wants a tool to stop the Windows Update from running, and forcing updates... is there such a tool that actually works?

Yes you are right, I meant auto update to be turned off from the background. I love windows 7, but I dont think Alienware 17r3 has all compatible drivers with windows 7 :(

Buy a cheap Win 7 license(if you haven't one from before) and try. Search the web and maybe other people have solution for you. I mean almost 100%, people with your machine have done it.

Reclock can come in handy if you don't Gsync. If you madVR + Gsync, you don't need to run reclock anymore, or so it seems!

thanks, I didn't know that but I thought GSYNC syncs the frames per second to the monitor refresh rate and has nothing to do with Audio where ReClock comes in handy

This update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:
    • Improved reliability of Internet Explorer 11, Start, File Explorer, action center, graphics, and the Windows kernel.
    • Addressed issue that was causing System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) Management Console to crash in State view.
    • Addressed connectivity issue from a 32-bit application to a Remote Desktop Gateway that doesn’t have HTTP tunneling enabled.
    • Addressed issue of updates not being restored when doing a system reset, even if those updates were permanently installed.
    • Addressed issue that was causing domain logon attempts to fail on a Windows 10 Pro device after upgrading from Windows 10 Home.
    • Addressed issue that was causing failed logon counts of non-admin users without network logon permissions to be counted as cumulative, resulting in devices going into BitLocker recovery more frequently.
    • Improved support for websites by updating the HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) preload list.
    • Improved support for IT administrators using Group Policy to block users updating the operating system from Windows Update.
    • Improved reliability and stability of the notification framework for enabling contextual notifications in File Explorer.
    • Addressed an issue that prevented System Center Configuration Manager from performing inventory uploads via Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) when Encrypting File System (EFS) has been disabled.
    • Addressed additional issues with USB, Wi-Fi, clustering, setup, Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, licensing, PowerShell, Component Object Model (COM), Windows kernel, graphics, and Bluetooth.
For more information about the complete list of affected files, see KB3197954.

@Papusan: Does increasing boost ratio for one core improve single threaded perf? For example, I have a i7 6700HQ, If I use XTU or TS to set clock modulation to the max(35X) on 1st and 2nd cores , will I see huge benefits in single core perf.?

Probably same ****ty as turbo boost on graphics. You like that tech?

If your laptop Manufacturer doesn't use this throttling tech, you don't need to use clock modulation(don't need to tick the box). 6700Hq is a fully locked processor. Best bet is Under volt, so your processor will have lower power usage under load and your processor can work longer with maxed clockspeed.

Laptop Manufacturer is Alienware and model is 15 r2. So far, XTU scores are 965 at default, 955 at -100mV undervolt and 950 for -150mV offset respectively. I'm going to fresh install my pc this week so I can undervolt a little more at -200 mV or so.

Remember a too low core voltage can decrease performance  You need to find the middle way. Also Wprime 1024M stress test, Cinebench R11.5 and R15 is very good benchmarks tests. Especially Wprime. Same also the old 3DM11. XTU bench relying too much on ram.

    no, 2 totally diff. things.

This enables you to unpark all cores to they are immediately ready for action when required so the small lag from changing a core state from parked to unparked is eliminated.

I haven't tested this though so use it at your own risk

    @Phoenix and @Papusan

What do you guys recommend for PDF reading? I ask because I would love to see if there is a good alternative to Adobe Extreme Bloatware Edition PDF reader (i.e. Acrobat). I have tried a few alternative but ultimately I find myself using Acrobat Reader due to some feature that isn't quite there. Would love to know if you have an opinion on this and if there is something worthy of the software list (or unworthy of Acrobat reader is the only real choice - curse you Adobe!).

Do not under any circumstance use Foxit Reader, it has built in PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Program)

    Use this:

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/pdf_xchange_viewer.html

I bought the Pro edition as it allows me to edit PDFs but the free version is awesome, no bloat, light, no PUPs or Viruses

I'll add this to the OP as well

I don't use the sysinternals suite, just the Autoruns

It's in the OP. It's the best tool for managing startup items/services/tasks and getting rid of bloat

Example, after you disable Windows Defender which is one of the heaviest AVs out there, disable it startup items manually by typing defender in the filter:

Phoenix can you help me understand this graph. Isn't a higher impact score, the better it should be?

I remember back in windows 7, it was a consensus that microsoft security essentials is the lightest and does it job quite well. What changed? What is your recommended AV program then?

higher impact means higher impact! means heavier on your system

    the lower the better

    Windows Defender is the heaviest.

Heck even loading my software folder which contains a lot of portable apps that I've assigned custom icons to loads up in slow motion if I was using Windows Defender while the icons load instantly with any other AV. Let alone the total system drag I feel if I'm using Defender. The moment I disable it, I feel like I'm on turbo charged computer.
