This is yet anther poll but now we get to ask some further questions. I have put this up for 60 days, for myself, as of now, I am still on the fence about downgrading.
An Edit; if your plans change please come back and change your vote as well. We should all know about the 30 day inplace reversion and you have till 7/29/16 to use an image of your old installation, or new install, and retain your key.

I've actually performed a clean install of W10 - not an upgrade - played with it for 12 hours and nuked it.
Nothing in there for me that would make me leave W7, and plenty of stuff that I wouldn't be able to tolerate.
Obviously, YMMV. -
I wish we could pick multiple options. I have 7 and 8.1 and I'm waiting for others to sort it out. I'll still keep 7 no matter what however.
-
I too but it is either one or unlimited and we know where unlimited would get us. Very early on yet but about what I expected.

I disabled driver updates from the device installation settings in the Hardware tab in the system properties
I disabled driver updates from Group Policy
I disabled driver updates by ensuring the value of the following registry entries are set:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\ Windows\CurrentVersion\DriverSearching]
"SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\DriverSearching]
"SearchOrderConfig"=dword:00000000
The moment I connected to the internet all drivers were being installed From Windows Updates.
Formatted and went back to Windows 7, I will not let anyone control what drivers I run on my system. period. -
Yeah, you can delay but not stop it. Without M$ coming out with a reversal we are doomed. If however the marketplace hits them over the head hard and long enough maybe that will change.
-
In terms of how the layout and UI works, I like it better than 7 and much better than 8. But it's buggy, as to be expected this close to launch. That bugginess is enough of an issue that while I upgraded my Win8.1 convertible (it's a better total experience even with the bugginess), I'm sticking with 7 on my DTR laptop for the time being. Once Win10 is as bug-free as 7 is, I intend on moving all my PCs to it (except for my work PC, where office policies and not personal preference dictate what it runs).
-
Yeah, the office most likely would not be happy with productivity work flow not having the privacy they would like. I doubt many companies will ever want to change over to this unless M$ makes some serious changes. I know the Enterprise version is supposed to have some/more changes but most smaller businesses will only be able to afford and run pro versions.
-
I have several PC's and chose to test W10 on two laptops. I'm now down to testing on only one laptop. I don't dislike W10 or the UI but it's downright buggy. I'm leaning on staying put with Windows 8.1 on my gaming rigs. I don't like forced drivers.
-
Tried W10 on my Surface Pro 3 and my XMG U705 (Clevo p770zm). Went back to 8.1 on both. On the SP3, the tablet experience is much worse than before, and the new browser even lacks swiping forward/back. Plus with 64gb ssd, the new onedrive is much worse since files can't be put on a microsd. On my U705, I had several random crashes with no warning or even description in system logs. I'll stick with 8.1 on both until the kinks get ironed out (much like 8 before 8.1).

That is one thing I hate too, few if any error codes. I have no issue debugging but without the codes that makes it a bit rough.

I have been using M$ since the 70's so I will not rehash this again. If the head of IT feels so great about it he should campaign for 8.1 or better yet 10 to be on all your machines. If it works for you guys all the better. I have again no issue with people using whatever OS and workflow that does it for them.
I have no end of days but do know an issue when it exists, there are some major issues. I did not create them, I did not ask for them but I sure will point them out. Does it mean it is over for M$, that is up to them!
Edit; There is an old but true saying, "It is the squeaky wheel that gets oiled", so if you want it fixed scream at the top of your lungs and fight back in anyway you can. With consumers this is our wallets, don't use their products and start using (or at least looking for) alternatives.Last edited: Aug 8, 2015E.D.U. and Spartan@HIDevolution like this. -
I actually almost went back to win7, but the file transfer, task manger and usb3.0 driver stopped me from doing so. I was almost day 1 win8 and day 1 win 10 adapter. I don't see point going back to 8.1 from 10 on a desktop. Yes the restricted options suk big but it is kind of fixable. If I can get those three thing on win7, I am going back.
Sent from my 306SH -
going back to 8.1? is it one on 7 and the other on 8.1 originally?
-
by desktop i mean non tablet, pardon my wording, it was on 8.1.
Those 3 thing were introduced in win8, and I am just saying no point reverting 10 to 8.1. -
Most 8.x systems will probably not do a reversion unless the driver updates breaks the update process. The only other real concern would be privacy but s long s that can be curtailed it is not a real issue on non portable systems. With a portable system it might be an issue on other networks.
As an example I can give the password to someone with a W10 system for my guest network but I can not trust someone elses system with my primary network password. So now visitors with W10 systems can not get access to the movie library or printers I am not too sure how this could effect WiFi LAN parties either. -
I changed my vote from being on the fence to not upgrading.
The comments below this PC Gamer article are extremely telling as to the reception Win 10 has received so far.
http://www.pcgamer.com/the-verdict-is-in-on-windows-10-gaming-performance-compatibility/
DX12 is going to have to be extraordinarily revolutionary for me to even begin to consider upgrading to this mess.
There is no real reason other than DX12 to upgrade. None. It's a total waste of my time and energy and then I get to worry about M$ getting shifty about my torrenting activities (oh they absolutely want you to buy said media from them instead) among other issues.
I'm running a creative sound card that may not work until Creative provides updated software / firmware.
Say I want to to X99 in a few years time or a different platform? Yeah unlike with Win7 your OS is assigned to the motherboard, you cannot make hardware changes.
I'm also reading about the fun people are having with black-screens etc. with 353.62 where the solution is modifying an earlier driver to work with 10, but then the OS is forcing display driver updates on them!
The forced driver and MS updates are the most worrying to be honest.
What could possibly go wrong you ask?
Oh I don't know, things like the KB update that rendered sfc /scannow useless maybe?
M$ doesn't exactly have a good track record here with various KB updates royally screwing things up, you think that is going to change now?
Can't wait until people get some forced update en masse that induces a BSOD upon start up and everyone has to resort to using their mobile device to get online and figure out they need to "somehow" get into Safe Mode and "temporarily" defer/ disable offending update.
Other concerns, so in a post-Snowden world we know M$ and the NSA / The Powers That Be are one and the same ("Fascism is the merger of state and corporate power" - Bennito Mussolini). Considering things are deteriorating socio-economically and ecologically (any connection here?) at an exponential pace there may come a time in the not-too-distant future (i.e. 5-10 years) where having an internet kill-switch that selectively denies those designated as "subversives" access to the web extremely prudent on the part of the 1%.
You may think this is all a bit over the top but I am absolutely not kidding about anything in the last paragraph. You better believe the ultra-wealthy are getting ready for STHTF. Real unemployment at 25%? 60% of American's spending more than 50% of income on rents (historically this has 25% of income)? Irreversible desertification of California, the bread-basket of the country? Oh they have the camps, they have the ammo, and they absolutely want a selective internet kill-switch in place.
Why else all the surveillance EULA? You know why? It's a well known fact that the Weimar Republic told the German populace that they were being actively monitored, all of their mail read, all phone-calls monitored, as a means of suppressing dissent. After the war it was ascertained that the 3rd Reich was actually only monitoring 5% of the populace. They simply wanted to create the illusion that everyone was being monitored all of the time so that the populace would engage in self-policing, basically do the work for the state.
Some things never change. -
I haven't got my chance to upgrade yet, but when I do I plan to wait and let others sort things out. I'm running trial versions of Windows 8 for awhile yet, and those can't be upgraded to 10. I plan to buy either 7 or 8 rather than 10, both because they tend to be a few bucks cheaper and because that gives more flexibility than buying 10 outright.
But I'm not sure about whether I'll try 10 even after getting non-trial 7/8. I have come to, if not quite like Windows 8's interface, at least find it quite workable after a bit of tweaking (that doesn't even include Start8, etc.). I wouldn't even say the start screen is much worse than the start menu on a desktop/non-touch laptop anymore. So I'm not sure the Win10 start menu is really that compelling now that I've come to accept Win8's screen as a not-actually-that-bad option. Thus, really, the features seem to be (1) DX12, and (2) integration with things such as Cortana. I'm not wild about the latter due to the privacy implications, especially given the questionable defaults Microsoft has with Windows 10, and I really don't care about DX12 now. It was only a few months ago I started playing DX10+ only games, none of my GPUs support DX12, and no games support DX12 yet - not to mention that I tend to care much more about gameplay than graphics anyway. I'm not that keen on the Metroization of Windows, either - I've largely ignored Metro in 8, and would rather just keep buying/downloading Win32 programs from my preferred source than buying Metro ones from a built-in-to-the-OS store where it's likely to be limited to Windows only and have at least Windows-store-based DRM (as opposed to, say, an installer you can download and install as needed). In other words I don't really have a problem with how Windows functions in XP, 7, or 8, so Ten is solving a problem that doesn't exist for me. And the privacy settings and things like mandatory updates make me question whether it's worth it. I have been known to stick with older versions of software intentionally before - I'm typing this in Opera 12, for that matter - so mandatory updates really aren't appealing, particularly since they'll apply to functionality much more widely than the mostly-security-issues-and-bugfixes updates of Windows 7 and before (and to a lesser extent, 8.x).
The fact that it's free also is a bit of a disincentive, since it means that it's switching to being more user-data and advertising funded. Solitaire is now ad supported or subscription based, for crying out loud. And while I play maybe 3 games of Windows Solitaire a decade now, is Microsoft really so pressed for cash that they need to make things that have been included since Windows 3 ad-supported or ten bucks a year? Will Windows 10.1 make Remote Desktop an optional ad-supported or subscription-based piece of software in the name of de-bloating Windows or something like that (but actually to raise more money)? One of the great things about using computers instead of TV and a cell phone instead of a landline is not getting bombarded with advertisements to nearly the same degree, and I definitely don't want ads to be an integral part of such a core piece of software on the computer. 10.0 itself may be passable after some tweaks like removing Metro apps like News and disabling web search, but Microsoft has financial incentives to Bingify the OS, and if 10.1, 10.2, etc. keep Bingifying more things, I could see myself switching to Windows 7, Linux, or possibly even OS X as a result. -
Keeping both 8.1 and 10? Not a poll option.
-
Sorry, I did not do that as it would legally have to have been either 2 separate 8.1 keys with one converted to 10 or a separate new 10 key. I guess I could have done that but I'd have to figure out every other legal convolution and put them there as well. Remember I'm a mod and have to strictly follow the TOS.

Right the downgrade can happen up too 7/29/16. The thing is you can not have 8.1 installed originally and end up using that one key to create a dual boot machine. Same thing goes for a single 7 key either.

not both at the same time, one key is valid for running/installing only one at a time as per the EULA.

I've made the above assumption because I don't expect microsoft to be all that generous, but I do emphasize that I haven't read anything that indicates you can't go back. Your conversation seems to imply otherwise: one could have a windows 8.1 install or a windows 10 install, just not both at the same time. -
Changed my vote from "waiting" to "7 and will not be upgrading". After one week I've seen enough problems to know I don't want to upgrade, nor do I want to lose my win7 key.

The problem is not just the bugs but policies put into place that exacerbates those same bugs. those are;
1.) mandatory forced updates.
2.) reduction in reported error codes for troubleshooting.Last edited: Aug 12, 2015 -
Currently running Win 8.1 and won't be upgrading until they do something about forced updates and privacy settings.

Microsoft is explaining only what's in "significant" updates, but not all, for Windows 10. As if the auto-install updates on Home and auto-install-in-a-few-months on Pro wasn't bad enough, now you don't even get to find out what's in the updates, even when you do care to check! Combined with Microsoft's default privacy settings in Windows 10 and the, to be generous, less than stellar record they and Skype have in opposing government surveillance, the lack of transparency on updates is rather concerning. If they're all innocuous feature updates and bug fixes, what's the downside of releasing detailed descriptions? A little embarrassment over an occasional bug that probably shouldn't have slipped through wouldn't be the end of the world.
I can't say my desire to try Windows 10 (beyond light testing of the Insider Preview months ago with no data of importance installed) has increased as I've learned more about it the past month; if anything the opposite. Currently weighing trying out Linux on my laptop, but even if that doesn't work out I think I'll go with 7 or 8 over Ten. -
Hi,
from Windows 10 I revert back to Windows 7 Professional... I will await the first SP as there are too many issues for the power saving of the external devices. -
Wow, according to the stats here, 40% of those who participated in the poll said they either are on 7 and aren't upgrading to 10 or have tried 10 and reverted to 7 with only 7% out of 50% of this group saying they switched from 7 to 10 and are staying.
Personally speaking, I'm compelled to update, and attempt to deal with the forced updates as I broke my version of 7 a few months ago when my system suffered a power outage while doing System Restore. Something broke and now it is incapable of doing System Restore and taking Windows Updates (updates induce BSOD upon reboot). I can't simply do a Repair Install as I upgraded from Home to Professional and it tells me the Pro key is invalid and I don't have the original Home media or key (I didn't think I would need it anymore after upgrading).
So I can either do a clean install, or fix the issue by upgrading to 10.
For me the issue with 10 isn't so much the privacy concerns, as the following article rightfully points out,if youv'e been using Google's products you've already been having all of your personal information pilfered through (although Bill Gates and his Eugenics / vaccine program, advocation of GMO's and Geo-Engineering and eagerness to support and collude with the security surveillance state [NSA etc.] do cast him as a nefarious "uber-mensch". Bill Gates is a bad dude. I don't trust him or Micro$haft with a 10 foot pole. That's the difference between Micro$haft and Google.) My issue is primarily with the forced updates, which have already caused the BSOD loops we envisioned happening (but not THIS soon) let alone the fact that Nvidia's driver quality control has (obviously) slipped in the past few years and now you have to be insane to update to the newest driver without at least first visiting the drivers respective multi-page feedback page on the Geforce forums. For example, if you look at the feedback for the most recent drivers you'll find issues that people have overcome by modifying older drivers but Windows 10 simply undoes all of that and forces the newest hardware update. 3D Vision, which I sill use on occasion, is apparently broken with Windows 10. SLI is broken. Various other issues with the only solution for Windows 10 users being, again as I said, the modification of older drivers but then Windows 10 simply undoes this with a forced update upon reboot.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/29...asons-you-shouldnt-upgrade-to-windows-10.html
I absolutely will not tolerate this level of stupidity on the part of M$.
Why are they so adamant we have no control over what updates they force down our throats?
Again, we're dealing with Bill Gates here, I said this in another post elsewhere and I'll say it again here, they might want a selective internet kill switch in place to simply deprive "subversives" access to communication.
"Politics is War by other means"
"Economics is Politics by other means".
You better believe that we live in an insane milieu of class warfare. Bill Gates is like that evil dude from Star Wars who answers directly to Darth Vader. He seems kinda normal, at least in appearance, but he's deeply criminally insane and sociopathic.

I have upgraded two computers to 10 so far and I will downgrade them both back to 7.
This computer I'm typing right now has a sleep bug and stuttering video playback. I could troubleshoot video issues but apparently there is no fix for the sleep, so downgrade it is for now.
The 11" laptop 3G modem drivers don't work and I actually need that thing to work so also that I need to downgrade.
I am going to upgrade my gaming desktop from 8.1 to 10 at some point though. It's for fun, not productivity... -

Heck they even added Telemetry to Windows 7 and 8 via the latest updates so even if people refuse to upgrade, they still have them under their control / monitoring.
One must really know what he's doing these days when it comes to computers or they are putting themselves in a huge privacy risk that may lead to prosecution.
