    I'm staying on 8.1 pro.
I have no interest in dealing with problems caused by trying to upgrade to 10. I followed matrix leaders directions and uninstalled all updates that have to do with windows 10. My laptop works perfectly fine just the way it is. Why would I want to upgrade just to give Microsoft more control than the already have. When my laptop gets to the point to were I can't play games anymore because I don't have the latest os installed then I might look in to upgrading but until then there really is no reason what so ever for me to upgrade

The O&O ShutUp addresses the two primary issues with W10 IMHO. That is the forced hardware updates as I still allow usual ones and then the privacy. Inconveniences such as default metro apps are eventually to be dealt with as well. So for now it is a workable solution, this being as I do not really use the start menu. other than to shut down or change users.

Fortunately I have a 3 year old system so hardware updates are rare but I have two that can not be updated. First is the 7260 Wifi as I use the smart connect with my R8000 and the default takes forever to get a connection, 3-5 minutes after the local login. The intel recent 8.1 drivers are as soon as you login. My second issue is Elan touchpad as with the default drivers the disable with mouse plugged in does not survive reboots. With the Samsung driver it does survive properly.

So in the end I do not need M$ deciding what works best on my hardware as they are wrong. I can understand for the casual user having this on by default but there should be a built in disable option and it would even be nice to have it as a per device/driver so for casual users we could just troubleshoot and lock drivers where needed.

Well thanks to @Matrix Leader I am back with W7 and O&O defrag to stay. Now that I can force Trim to my SSD's W10 no longer has a hold on me. If M$ truly addresses the privacy issues I may return but not till then.

Unfortunately for two of my existing systems (an X201 and T420 ThinkPad) I literally had to revert back to the original W7 Pro x64 OSes, as stability was a nightmare on them - I had tried everything under the sun from a brand new W7 OS install on a new HDD before kicking off a clean install with W10 OS media but nothing kept it stable. I know at the end of the day they are not officially supported systems but they just kept on crashing and burning (especially when trying to run virtual machines on the T420)! :(

Oddly enough though my cousin's system (Lenovo Flex 10) runs W10 Pro like a champ (very surprised at that considering it has the lower powered CPU in it) but I think that's more down to the fact we had replaced the bundled 5400RPM HDD with an SSD instead - what a joy that was to crack open the case on that one!

I found that even with 2 SSD's in my primary system that W10 was slower than W7. Why I do not know but with a 5,400 RPM drive my guess is it could be a nightmare.

Just found this thread. Upgraded from Win 7, keeping Win 10. Snappy OS, subjectively faster as a general experience (opening programs, opening windows, start-up times, loading web pages, etc), gaming performance good (pretty much the same as Win7), I like the interface.

Personally I liked the interface and nothing to complain about there. Boot time was slower for me but once up it was about as fast as W7, then again dual SSDs nothing is really slow. The problem is privacy, plain and simple. That along with forced hardware updates that is.

    +1

Couldn't agree more, it's a great OS destroyed by 2 very simple things: 1) We are not in control, my system is for me to tweak and decide what drivers I install. 2) the privacy, that is inexcusable

My desktop is staying on 7, full stop. Well, until the security updates run out, then I have to figure out where to go from there.

Laptop's running a Linux variant, so Windows is a moot point, though if I get a new laptop, I'll get whatever's on their (Win7 or Win8.1->Win10), though I read that customizing Win10 to be a bit more friendly to the user privacy-wise is a steep, uphill battle... And even then it'll probably have to be Win10 Pro, because I don't want a forced update breaking my system...

That tool by O&O fixes both of those issues though does it not?

I really don't want to fuss with reinstalling Windows on my desktop... My laptop is going to come back from Sager with a fresh 8.1 Pro install but my desktop I'll probably leave on Windows 10 Pro just because I don't want to sit there and figure out which ASUS drivers I need and such for Windows 7.

All Windows machines I maintain have 8.1 and will not be moving to 10.

    1) The tool does fix the privacy concerns, but I noticed that disabling driver updates worked at first on my desktop, but for some odd reason, on any laptop I use O&O ShutUp 10 on, it doesn't work.

    2) I used to own a forum in the past dedicated especially for laptop clean install guides and know my way around ASUS drivers/laptops inside out. If you give me your laptop model, I will create a clean install guide for you with all the right drivers and step by step instructions.

    1) I have Windows 10 Pro so that won't affect my laptop although if you want to disable updates, you can work around it by setting your connection to metered.

    2) The ASUS is a Maximus VI Formula in my desktop, I would never subject myself to the pain of owning one of their laptops lol. ASUS has all the drivers on their site, I just don't want to spend hours setting it up, especially since my H100i runs on full blast until I install the AiSuite and set up the fan profiles for silent mode. Windows 7 is such a tedious install...

It is, so far in building my Windows 7 Clean Install Guide, I have around 100 images of step by step instructions on how to tame it against the privacy concerns/unwanted Windows Updates, it was a living nightmare. The guide should be released within 48 hours and you will be shocked at how much detail it has. But yes, it is one nasty / tedious install man.

PS: I have an X-99 Deluxe, I overclocked my 5930K in the BIOS to 4.4 GHz with an offset voltage for the CPU of 0.210V and everything is running smooth @ 40C on idle and 60C on max load since it is water cooled thus I have to set the CPU fan monitor to IGNORE since there is no CPU fan.

Why would I need AiTweaker installed on my system? I remember that when I got my Origin PC Millennium Desktop they did have AiTweaker installed as well although I saw that it is only for overclocking easily through its interface on the desktop. Am I missing anything by not installing it? Mind you the CPU fan control does not concern me since I am on water cooling. Please tell me.

Since I have to do the install and setup over my TV since I don't have a monitor maybe I'll suck it up and put 8.1 back on... As much as I hate it.

I have an H100i and never could get the Corsair Link software to work with it so I have both of the fans plugged into the motherboard. AiSuite has a handy feature where it puts the system under load and adjusts the fans for various profiles. The silent profile keeps my noisy stock Corsair fans dead silent under 99% of the workloads I throw at it at 4.7GHz on my 4790K. AVX is the only thing that really kicks the fans up.

Wow, thank you guys for doing this. I couldn't find any polls so started my own, polling mostly folks in ZDnet comments. Am linking your post results to that poll set, which is still ongoing, in frankforum (just started mostly due to Win10 problems, didn't know NBR had threads on it).

I had 15 possible computers to update to 10. Became an Insider, tested one on a machine with no private data, didn't like Win10 mostly because it's childish and dysfunctional, but it did run old programs, so would have voted here not to update. But the EULA makes it dangerous to use, so definitely will not update. There are too many things 10 won't do that I can do better with XP (which is fine, if offline) and Win7. Its 64-bit Win10 is smoother than Win7's, but I don't need that now. Maybe Hyper-V is better, but I don't need that now, either (my Win98 machines are still in great health). Win8 I've no use for, but installed only one of my retail copies so I could do the Insider with Win10.

Will be removing that drive from my Dell Latitude 6510 shortly. BTW, had no driver or install problems, starting with build 10162 through the RTM which is activated, but golly the official installer won't allow initial clean install of Win10 on a separate partition, so not going further, no matter what.

    Thank you for your time.
