This is actually my Dad's laptop which is a 2004 Dell Inspiron 510m, equipped with an Intel Pentium M 1.5Ghz, 1.5GB DDR RAM and a Toshiba 40GB 4200RPM drive running Windows 7 Starter edition.



Despite the modest benchmark times in real world terms it actually boots to the desktop faster than my T61 since the BIOS on the Dell posts quicker than my Thinkpad T61!

It's weird but I haven't seen any vertex 2 times yet, they should easily bump me from the first place...

 

LOL, I'm getting squeezed by slower drives than on my Momentus XT

First run on my SU7300..all services on = 30.233

 

Don't know if you know but Boottimer.exe needs to be ran a couple of times to get fast readings. Sometimes it looks like it's hanging.

15.771... Over 5 seconds quicker just by running it again.

 

Not bad considering I haven't upgraded to an SSD yet. Specs in sig.

Edit: Ran it again a couple of times, and this is what i've been getting (give or take a few seconds). [see second screenshot]

My boot time was originally ~60 seconds. I got it down to ~45 by defragging the boot files but I feel there is more I can do. I only have 8 necessary startup applications, including CCleaner, and 5 non-MSFT services running. Any suggestions? I feel like the longest hang-time is at the log on screen where it can take up to 10 seconds to log in. Also, please bear in mind that I just reformatted about two weeks ago.

Everday startup - Only disabled auto-connect on my WLAN.

 

Props for doing it right in 1 time Ryan.

I'd be interested to see how fast you can boot if you disable all startup processes and services.

Thanks, the Momentus XT is one sweet HDD.

My P7805, despite being more powerfull, just does not touch the U81 for boot times. I guess this is because of enabling the Nvidia 9800 and the bios takes a minimum of 8 seconds compared to the 5 seconds for the U81. These programs though do not use bios post times from what I can see.

I would like to have made the top 20 but considering the specs I'm up against, I'm quite satisfied.

 

23 seconds with a 5400rpm hard drive, that's quite remarkable.

But I see grbac did it in 15.8 seconds with the same hard drive. I had no idea that was possible.

 

Isn't the 320BEKT the WD 320 Black, not the 250 Blue?
Also from his sig, same posting "Clevo W860CU - 720QM, 4GB DDR3, GF GTX 285M, 320GB, 15.6" 1920x1080". I'm not sure that isn't the system either then, just trying to be accurate here............

 

Yes bekt is black. Still surprisingly fast though.

 

You should probably add in the list that my entry is actually my desktop, which I mentioned originally.

Q6600, Hitachi HDT7250K 320GB (5400RPM). I honestly have no idea as to why my clean install of Windows 7 takes so long to start. Maybe it's my TV tuner.

I'll post my G73's stock config if you want. I haven't reinstalled the OS.

 

Agreed, very fast for a HDD but it does make it a bit easier to swallow.............

The newer 320 Blacks I think use a platter similar to the new 500's. The post by Creator527 in other thread on the hardware forum showed a marked increase, could this be a preview of what we can expect from those too? Definately more info would be appriciated........

My P7805, with an XT as well, will not do better than 24 seconds and that has a P9600 compared to a P8400 and DDR3 1066 MHz instead of DDR2 800 MHz as in the U81-a. So identical HDD's definately do not equate to equal boot times.

The 24 seconds is the reason for me wanting a SSD in this but to tell you the truth the HDD access feels the same between the two computers including boot up...............

 

something i noticed on M17X R2. with ati driver installed the boot time is 5 sec slower. all other apps take 3-4 sec more. all those in comparison with the boot time of a fresh format. i have all default apps running during startup thus a few others. this is for win7 x64 ultimate

Trying to figure out the best system for testing (Intel or AMD) as the Intel uses other controllers with respect to SATA 6Gbs which seem to be capped...although I have this feeling that Im not going to get as quick boot times with a beefed up desktop inclusive of video card etc...

Will actually be my first desktop build from scratch.

Nice breaking into the top 3 again though since I have been pushing my boot times since...oh 2007 I think.

Odd, I've tried rebooting several times with the boot timer, unclicked "ask me when opening", etc. But it has not once measured it?

 

You ran boottimer.exe after unclicking "ask me when opening" and it asked do you want to reboot?

Then he would be the only one who could mod/post it............

I am real happy with the XT in my U81a but can't wait till tomorrow to join the SSD rank with my P7805..........

 

pbc....Do you have to log on when you restart windows? This could be where it is getting stuck.
