RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation

After installing todays windows update and rebooting as needed i had this error pop up:

"RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCRTL.OCX occupied an address range reserved for Windows systems DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL."

It pops after every reboot, scandisk is clean, and nothing as far as i can tell so far isnt working. But i'm at a loss what to do. The only thing i can think to do is a system restore, but as ive never done one before im reluctant to do so.

    Hmm... have you tried google?

And that's the weirdest error message I've ever seen. Gotta love windows.

As far as google, must be the onboard Realtek software. Try reinstalling your sound software and driver.

Your RealTek Audio program uses a Dynamically Linked Library (often-used code that the program calls when it is run) called HHCRTL.OCX which occupies an address range in memory which overlaps space now reserved for user32.dll in Windows.

A solution would be to uninstall this program and reinstall it from the CD that came with your system or your recovery partition. If you don't need it---it may be the RealTek Audio mixer or something---then just leave it uninstalled. However, if it is the driver then you must have it installed.

Cool, I was just about to install the update that supposedly causes the conflict. Now I can avoid this problem entirely.

I just rec'd this today after installing a MS critical patch. If all I have to do next is load the "Update for Windows XP (KB935448)", you guys will have rocked.

    Brief Description:
Install this update to resolve an issue where the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not start after you install security update KB925902 (MS07-017) and security update KB928843 (MS07-008).

Oh, thank god this wasn't just me. I was pretty sure last night's Windows Update was the culprit so I googled and was led here. Before I did this though, I did a system restore to a few days back and now the same icon is in my task bar asking to install it. For my situation, what should I do? Now that I know there's a patch available, do I go ahead and install the damn thing again and then install the patch?? Thanks in advace

Yes, just install the MS critical patch. You'll probably run into the error again, but the good news is MS released a hotfix already for the problem. Follow the links already provided and download/install the hotfix. No problems whatsoever. NO NEED TO DO ANYTHING DRASTIC!!!

For me, the fascinating bit is how quickly Google picked up this thread and led people here. It was either good timing or Google realise that there's some good material at this site so it needs to be re-searched frequently.

Yes... Called Symantec and they had me uninstall IS2007, and re-install an updated version, that when I started to have problems with the Realtek program.

    Hi CWB

 Same old problem with Microsofts dodgy updates. Why they don't test them first I'll never know. Restore does work :) . Go to Start, Accessories, System Tools, Restore, Restore to an earlier date should already be ticked. You should have a bold number 1 on the calender which is an automatic system restore point. Select that and go through the steps. Should sort it out(+ it's reversible if you don't like the results - can't see why you wouldn't though!)

    Regards
    Andy

OOPS What a lot of replies since I first read the original post and went off to restore my system. Serves me right for not reading it properly when I came back!

Did your mic work before installing the patch?

I would download the latest drivers from RealTek's website and install them. Make sure you uninstall your old RealTek drivers before you install the new ones.

No, it did not work then either. It stopped working right after I got the error message "RTHDCPL.EXE - Illegal System DLL Relocation".

Call me stupid... but I do not know which drivers should I download from that website. I have 5.10.00.5172 / DirectX9.0c / ALC260 at the moment. (WinXP)

    Hello

I installed the patch that I found on this site and it removed the pop up of the error but now whenever I start up I get a message that there is a "duplicate name on the network" and it is a "system error".Is it because of the patch or is there something else wrong?

    Thank you

No need to remove the MS update. I would personally want the fix that MS put out. All you need to do after the update is to get the hotfix off of MS's site or follow the link found in a thread on the first page.
