RocketDock vs ObjectDock

ObjectDock FTW!!

I tried RocketDock, but couldn't get used to the way it worked for some reason.

I havent tried Rocketdock yet because apparently it doesnt work with x64 before. So i went ahead with Objectdock instead and im quite impressed.

Unless RD uses less resources than OD, i might consider switching

 

I used both and just liked the look and responsiveness of Objectdock better. There is nothing wrong with Rocketdock, though. It's still a good program.

 

Anyone else having trouble with the weather icon not working on ObjectDock?

Mine stopped working this morning. I've tried to load another weather icon (docklett?), but it also simply says "Feed not available... try later"

Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?

I use ObjectDock but it does crash on me a lot. And yes, the weather docklet does do that sometimes. If you just wait a little bit and try again, it usually works.

 

I prefer ObjectDock. I have used RD on my 32 bit systems in the past, but prefer the customization and look of OD better. Not to mention theres no RD 64bit support.

How do you like Plus? I was thinking about it myself... is it worth the $20? Unfortunately they don't really offer a way to test the Plus features without paying for it. Will it let me make multi-row, multi-column "docks" and move them anywhere on the screen?

 

I've only tried out ObjectDock so I can't comment on which one I like better. However, I've only had good experiences with ObjectDock. Nothing glaringly wrong with it.

 

since SP1..Objectdock has started crashing when i resume Windows.

And it chocks up the entire system.

I actually have them both installed at this time, although I am not automatically starting ObjectDock.

ObjectDock does not seem to allow me to create icons to control panel applets (e.g.: Printers) and RocketDock does.

ObjectDock has a 18.5MB footprint (after cleanup) and RocketDock, also after cleanup, has a 8.75MB footprint.

RocketDock has this cool Docklet, Stacks, that expands folders. I have not located a similar function in ObjectDock.

Stardock (Who make Objectdock, windowblinds, etc) are nothing but a bunch of money hungry idiots and chuck out badly coded apps for ridiculous amounts of money, considering you can get an alternative of all their software for free.

 

There is a stacks docklet for ObjectDock also. I used it back when I was using a dock. Let me see if I can find the link for you...

EDIT: This stacks docklet works with both RocketDock and ObjectDock.

 

Object dock used 8% of my cpu?!?!?!?! 8!!!!!!! thats horrible. rocket dock uses nothing and its FREE which makes it BETTER. nuf said

 

Idling, neither seems to use any CPU on my machine. I would expect that CPU utilization could be directly attributable to whatever Docklets were installed and in use.

 

I use RocketDock only as an app launcher. I don't like to have tons of icons on my desktop. I tried the stacks docklet, but for some reason all the configurations were lost at every startup.
In XP I used Y'z Dock. In Vista didn't worked...

 

Well mine was running the CPU and memory monitoring docklets. so i know that contributed to cpu usage, alot of it actually. But my issue is with it's functionality. Rocket dock is free and amazing, while the free version of object dock is horrible. I can't stand it.

Same here. In fact, I have no icons on my desktop whatsoever.

 

OD is quite low on resources, it only uses resources when you use it then idles in the background.

Task manager uses more memory .

 

RocketDock on top, ObjectDock below. Both running simultaneously. Both configured to anchor to the top of the screen. Both using the same skin. Both using the same icons.

 

Rocketdock has gaps between the icons when you scroll over them. Objectdock just feels better.

 

Gaps? Well, I should hope so. They're called "spaces."

I recall reading that to get those settings to stick you need to go into the dock settings area and, under General, tick the box that says "store settings in a portable INI."

 

Stardock has also published 2 high quality games that costs less than what other publishers would charge and don't use any of those crappy DRMs e.g. Securom. They're golden in my book.

 

The STACKS docket works, and the setting persist across a restart, on my Vista PC running RocketDock. Perhaps there was a bug in an earlier release of STACKS that has been fixed now.

Here is a fun little theme I threw together this evening. It works in both RocketDock and ObjectDock, but looks better in ObjectDock. If you run it in ObjectDock, tweak the ini file to make the icons 75%.

To be honest, I dont use most of the features. But only the tabs really, works wonderfully.
There are many features in it, including multiple docks so I am sure you can achieve the desired result from it

 

I'm using Objectdock right now, but I can't seem to get the stacks docklet to work for whatever reason. I heard somewhere that this could be because I'm using a 64-bit operating system. Is this true? If so, then is there any workaround? If not, then what could the problem be?

Ignoring disk footprint and CPU consumption as irrelevant, and focusing on the use and feel of them I find that OD has a bit more flexibility in customization of the eye candy aspects and RD is easier to configure overall. My opinion is that they both are very similar to each other.

 

I reinstalled ObjectDock; it has more control over placement of the icons onto tiles.

For example, this skin looks much better in ObjectDock than in RocketDock. However, I like this skin better in RocketDock than in ObjectDock.

I guess I will need to leave both dock products installed and activate them as the mood strikes me.

 

OK, I am a flip-flopper. I now have ObjectDock installed and have uninstalled RocketDock.

ObjectDock simply allows more control over the configuration.

 

Why? Because this was the first time for me with these docky things. I had a choice between OD, RD and Dell Dock.. and then I read around here, that Dell dock was made by the same guys who made OD or something.. So went for OD over RD. I did try RD though.. but felt OD let me do many things, as in configuring and setting it up, more easily.. at least I found it to be so.

 

Back on RocketDock here.

Still trying both of these out, but can't decide...I think I might just stick with Colibri/Launchy instead.

 

I've been meaning to go back to Rocketdock to note why I stopped using it...but there was a reason.

But OD has been good to me. No issues here...

never tried RD before, but OD has been great to me. very easy to customize and config.

 

I could not get OD to not run two instances; TASKMGR almost always showed two copies running.

 

I have ObjectDock.exe & Dock64.exe running. Is this what you speak of?

 

No. There is a bug in OD that causes two instances to be started. The only way I could find around it was to not check the option to start OD automatically and manually place a shortcut into the STARTUP folder.
