This is getting out of hand.
The whole point is that there is a *HUGE* audience of people willing to shell out cash to *PAY* for Windows XP to use in their next PC. If you are satisfied with Vista, good for you. For those of us that have issues with the software we use, then let us have the *OPTION* to buy the OS that works for us.
Especially since Windows Vista is only a year old. I understand it takes time to improve an OS, which is why XP should be available for sale for at least another year. By then, hopefully Vista SP2 will be out improving deficiencies, drivers will be more mature, and DirectX 10 hardware will finally catch up with its intended capabilities.
It still doesn't fix the fact that one huge issue I have is that the whole user interface was changed for no apparent reason, and no way to revert back to the classic interface without losing the functionality of Vista.
I have lived through and used extensively MS-DOS 6.22, Windows 3.0, 3.1, OS/2 Warp (ok I know its IBM), Windows 95, Win98/98SE, ME, 2000, XP, and Vista. I have to say that I *HATED* Windows 3.1, and was one of the first in line for Windows 95 and welcomed it with open arms even though I knew its deficiencies. XP was the same way. Although Windows 98SE was very stable and useful, XP was a welcome improvement. This time around Vista has done nothing but irritate me. I hope either Vista is improved significantly, or Windows 7 will be the next OS that we should have had instead of Vista. I just see Vista as a stop-gap between XP and Windows 7 same as Windows ME was just a stop-gap between 98 and XP.

Windows 95 was a freakin' memory hog. You needed like 8 mb to run it decently.
-
I remember I spent $300 to buy two 4MB memory sticks, lol. Worse yet, I spent $200 to buy an 80MB HDD for my Amiga 500.

I'm not against keeping XP around, but I don't think M$ is going to cotton to the idea. :twitcy:

I admit that I haven't had any experience with Vista other than messing with the interface for a few minutes at Best Buy, so my thoughts on the OS are not based on experience.
The fact that XP will not be sold after the end of June actually played a huge part in moving up the purchase of a new computer. If I would have had no choice but Vista, I think I would have seriously considered another OS...which would have been a problem, because I like Windows. My main gripe is the amount of resources Vista uses. I am no computer expert (and like I said, I haven't had any experience running programs on Vista), but honestly I don't want to use up any more of my resources than I have to to run the OS (one of the reasons I want a new computer is for a performance upgrade).
And, XP works just fine for me. And while I realize it is unrealistic to do so, I really have a huge problem paying for something that's new and isn't perfect. So, I would rather use the "old" technology that works until the "new" technology is ironed out and I feel it can sufficiently replace what works for me. I plan on eventually upgrading to Vista, but it probably won't be until Windows 7 is out an Vista is my only option.

Not to derail this thread but I'm getting the main gist of the very civil debate here is choice.
I think there should be a petition to get software developers to write or port more (ie. ALL) games and apps over to Mac OS. Then there will be a valid choice!
And sure you can install Windows onto a Mac but...why? The reason I'd buy a Mac is to use the o/s. If it weren't for a lack of games and specific apps that I use I'd have made the switch already. -
Those people advocating vista and forcing people to use VISTA please understand that our software which work fine in XP do not work in vista.
Our softwares do not work in vista
Our softwares do not work in vista
Please understand
Our softwares work fine in XP
Our softwares work fine in XP
I know people having no problems with VISTA will never understand this. I don't have anything particular against windows but Microsoft should not force vista on people before fixing vista compatibility issues. An XP VM will be perfect solution for this.
Is there anyway to get in touch with Microsoft developer community and discussing problems with them? Do they listen to non corporate clients? -
keep using xp if you have no problems with it.
june, from what i've read here, is the last month you'll be able to purchase a fresh copy of it, so get your copies by then. install it onto the notebooks/desktops you need for your work, and be happy with the smooth software compatibilities.
but when the programmers for those softwares that you use begin to shift and adapt to the new operating system, you'll still be stuck. no more support for the older versions of the software, only the new. that's just how it goes, and it sucks no doubt. so what are you going to do then?
personally, i'm cool keeping my dell and windows xp since it does, like as many have said, do what i need it to do without pain or hassle. but when i go to purchase my new lappy (hopefully within the next month), then i'll get to have two OS's to use and adjust to my daily computing. xp for the labor, vista for the fun. sorry, dell. -

Before this thread get closed due to unbelievebly wacked vista fanboys, let me tell you a few things:
- my audio card in VISTA not only has less than 1/2 the volume it has in XP,but the audio rendering in Vista is totally messed up
- i can`t use AutoCad in Vista without an error or sorts
-I can`t run several games which I love, and which in xp run close to maxxed out.
-I got 2 gb of RAM since I figure I would never have to use it all. In vista,1/2 goes to the OS. IT`S A OS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE ...it`s not a game, or an app that you need to eat ram.Xp never got me to 2gb ram usage so that the paging files don`t have to be touched
-Not SNAPPY at all. Browsing and using the explorer is sluggish in vista,no matter what system you have. I`ve recently seen 2 8800 GTX run in Vista like crap.System was some few days before that reinstalled.
-I like Vista as it`s pretty and all, but the programs I need ,or at least the better part of them either run like crap or don`t run at all. Don`t give me that BS about upgrading and such. Do you even listen to yourselves? MS is not giving free copies or upgrades just because you literally try to shove Vista up our collective throats.Give me a break , will ya? XP IS THE BEST OS AT THE MOMENT. It`s why it`s going to be supported for a long time. Bussiness companies,Universities,markets...all of them use XP.
Raise your hand if you bought Vista, even though you had XP just to upgrade. So that I may feel sorry for you.
Maybe SP2 will make Vista beter,I`d like that. But until then, LET US USE XP and enjoy good performance and stability. -
When i complain they say no one Forced u... and tell me to use XP..
Let me tell u this ..... NONSENSE!
Its impossible to find all XP drivers for my Laptop when even HP has taken them OFF THEIR WEBSITE.
If someone gets me all the XP drivers for my laptop i am willing to pay Him $100
PM me if u think u can help me.
Although Vista is quite Usable now after SP1 ... but still there are issues with Usb devices etc.
Wireless Printer Driver gets corrupted,
Broadcom Bluetooth adapter takes 5 mins to get ready,
Data Transfer from C: to D: still gets Hanged up.
Virtual DJ crashes too often... cant do a Live Show unless i use XP SP2
hence i am seriously going to pay you $100 if u can give me download link for all XP drivers for my laptop hardware. -

I ll post the list.. gtg now

Obviously yes there are still some Vista issues especially with compatibility and resource usage. But every OS has its flaws that need to be fixed. Im sure that some of the users of 98SE,2000,and Me had there problems with XP.
All im saying is people should try something before they judge it. And if they have tried it and dont like it; then so be it. GO AHEAD AND USE XP. But just because something doesnt work for you, that makes it garbage? Im sorry but i dont understand how your experience with something affects other peoples experiences.
Also, i noticed that you pointed out how universities, schools and businesses all use XP. My HS didnt upgrade from 2000 til 2006. While XPs overall superiority may have been a factor in this, im sure the money it would cost to upgrade was also taken as another large factor.
To be completely honest, it's debates like this that made me buy vista in the first place; i wanted to try it myself to see how i would judge it.

Upon using it, Ive found no problems for myself with it. Thats not to say that no one else will, but i myself dont. So now just because you have problems with it, and other people dont and they choose to advocate it, that makes them fanboys? -
All my programs work in Vista.
I have good performance and stability in Vista.
