Dave:
Nice tip man! Something always bugged me in Firefox but I could never figure out what it was! Finally, I have solved my angst!![]()
I installed the personal menu add-on and it works like a charm, I just wish I could assign it a different icon since the current one blows. Anyway, it's sweet and I am glad to have that extra space back! Thanks.

can i ask how to get the side toolbar to lock so that it is there all the time and doesnt come and go, please?
-
I actually prefer Hide Menubar.
It's called All-In-One Sidebar.
-
I've got a ton of FF themes and currently like the look of the IE 7. With the help of the aero theme, personal menu bar add on, and the glasser addon it looks very clean.. even better then IE 7 since the tabs bar is gone if you don't have any tabs open.

AIOS introduces some conflicts with some themes, so I used a couple of other add-on extensions in place of it for similar results. -
I can't find Hide MenuBar add-on. :O

Heres Mine

There is a link in here -
I see no place to download it though.

Windows Aero themed, IE like Firefox!

Hmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser. It does seem to have gone MIA. -
https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/10173
You can download it there. You have to register on the site first though. -
Not the same author. I'm sure it works the same, though...
Good thing I already have it installed.
-
Go the the options for the sidebar and unclick show/hide sidebar automatically.
You should also uncheck sidebar grippy and sidebar switch in the view menu for a cleaner look.
Here you go! -

personal menu integrates the features of hide menubar + gives you a replacement for the menus.
it is because of personal menu, that i only hvae one line (one bar) for buttons, locationbar etc). -
I have 1 bar for everything too if you notice the 1st post, but I achieved it differently. I just want to hide my "Menu" or toggle it. That Hide Menu Bar seemed perfect but it is no longer available. :/
-

i used hide menu bar for a long time till i realised that personal menu nowadays implements it 100% and more. it allows for removal of the lines between the bars as needed, and other tiny tweaks.
but that's what's great about ff: options. we can all do what we want.
still i suggest personal menu as a hide menu bar replacement nowadays. personal menu has big support so it will stay with future ff versions. that + the 3 buttons + tons of options == my reason of choise. -
I'll look for Personal Menu later and try it out.
-
I just realized that the glasser addon works with many of my other favorite themes. Right now I am at a toss up for using the aero or phoenity reborn theme. Using colorful tabs, personal menu, phoenity reborn, and glasser on this one. Also zblack theme looks nice with this settup as well.

I tried PersonalMenu awhile back and found that I did not want it to do everything it did, so I found HideMenuBar and used it instead. Now HideMenuBar has gone MIA.

what doesn't personal menu do that you want? because in my case, it 100% replaced hidemenubar
-
AKAJohnDoe Mime with Tourette's
It is not that it does not do what I want; it is that is does what I do not want.
It interferes with several other add-on extensions. -
I can't even get it to hide my menu bar...maybe because of TinyMenu interfering.
-
https://addons.mozilla.org/nl/firefox/addon/10173
I already posted this one earlier. I am using it right now and it doesn't interfere with other add-ons. You can just hide the menubar with that like toolbars you installed or whatever. -

Gotta love FF addons.
-
Meh. Don't wanna sign up for an add-on...
-
davepermen Notebook Nobel Laureate
well, okay, if you want to use tiny menu... i prefer to have the three buttons, so i have direct access to favourites, history and the menu. in about the same space. and no text.
then it works flawless. it messes with tiny menu yes, but that was, for me, reason to drop tiny menu. it has less use for me. -

I see that HideMenuBar has a new comment on the add-on page that tells how to get it, so it has not really going missing, just obscured. And of course, it is an experimental add-on extension, so, as before, you have to sign in to be able to download and install it.

Screenie of my new Firefox theme. Maxed out the viewing space.

Great thread!! I didn't know about the Side Bar extension and now that I installed it, I got rid of yet another toolbar. I also use the FireGestures add-in so there are many buttons that I don't need anymore, like the Go Back/Forward buttons. I also have 7 rows of bookmarks but I keep those hidden thanks to a Stylish scrip. I've been using Nautipolis for a long time but seeing y'all's themes makes me want to try a new one. Here's my screencap:

Yeah, it's pretty interesting to see how other people customize their Firefox since there is so much extensibility, it's like a desktop as to much things you can do to it. :]
-
-
That's your Desktop, not FF
LOL ;p -
Enlarge it!
-
I don't get it, is that FF is in the bin or something, since you are a Opera user? lol
-
-
Yeah you would. LOL
-
Wow, totally forgot that you could trick Firefox out so much. Cool thread, will have to start messing with add ons again.
-
Nice. I have a question for you since you have so many addons, however. Do you ever feel like Firefox is functioning slower at times? Did you notice a difference in performance the more addons you installed? I ask because I have always heard this from various people. I, myself, only have 3 addons and have always hesitated to add more for fear of bogging down FF, as well as reading about issues that some addons cause to the browser.

Apart from ff taking about 10 seconds to open for whatever reason, I can't say that I've noticed much difference tbh. Pages still load almost instantly like before.
On the Acid3 site I get 70/100 with all the addons and 71/100 in safe mode with no addons, if thats any good to you. -
Ah, I see. My FF does the same thing from-to-time, taking a while to start up. I only experience that after rebooting my system, though. Anyway, I'll probably go through and try to customize a little bit more.
Sorry for slightly derailing the thread (if applicable).

I suppose you could make a list of all the addons you want then install them all at the same time, you would then notice if ff becomes slower. -
Yeah, that's actually a good suggestion. I think I will try that. Thanks.

my firefox started up way slower thanks to the addons. at least on my notebook it took about one minute to start. but as the hdd in there was terrible slow anyways, i bought an ssd. now firefox starts in 1-2 sec and i can fill it with plug ins how ever i want (but i don't use as much as before).
-
In your case, based on the information provided, it sounds like the hang had really nothing to do with FF. On a somewhat off-topic note, when the prices come down a little further, I'm definitely going to look into an SSD.
-
I have a lot of add-ons as well, doesn't seem to hinder FF's performance
